Probably most 7 year olds know the answer to this, so I'm a bit embarrassed to ask. But as I've experienced the same problem many times, I'm just going to anyway.

I watched the 1st 40 minutes of a 11/2 hr video that someone had posted here yesterday. Later, when I tried to pick up where I'd left off, the little button thingy (I believe that's the correct technical term) would not allow me to drag it to the 40 minute mark, and I didn't want to re-watch it from scratch, so I gave up.

What am I doing wrong?

You're not doing anything wrong Mrs.
Some video uploads are just not coded to allow that function.

I would suggest that you download a thingy(again technical term) to allow you to download videos from sites like youtube and then watch them at your leisure. Then you can more easily get to the right point.

The best player is VideoLAN VLC which is free downloaded here it can play virtually any format you throw at it.

If you use firefox you can install this extension Flash Video Downloader there are lots of others available that do much the same job.
