I have resisted thus far posting in this thread but I am in one of those moods so here is my take.

I feel that allowing ourselves to become too insular and distrusting of others means that we have allowed ourselves to be manipulated by those who have set out to do so.
I am a member on a few boards I am yet to make a post on. I sign up because I am interested in reading and 'getting to know' the place rather than jumping in straight away somewhere new which can at times feel intimidating. particularly on smaller, close knit boards where people have known each other for years.
My vote would be to not remove members until they break rules, not remove them because they might be someone else or because they are taking time to post a hello.
Please read below in the objective manner it was intended.

What do you then contribute to those communities that would justify you considering yourself a member?
How would the community be impoverished by your absence?
A googlebot or other web crawler at least has the potential to generate new contributors as a result of topic searches.
Any community which terminated your membership would not be excluding you from participation, you'd already elected to do that yourself.

There is a weakness here which is being exploited to the detriment of this community. It would be complacent not to address it.
If by addressing it hesitant or non-posting members were sparked into contributing then surely both the individual and the community benefit.

I personally take offence at individuals who want the benefit of membership but wont lift a finger to sustain or enhance things for anyone else.
That has one assured outcome. the community becomes another web ghost town.

most of the places i belong to but do not post yet on offer information and discussion of said information, sometimes i promulgate that information or share a cause that they are interested in with others who would not seek it out otherwise - signposting the source of the info etc. I guess that my act of joining rather than just reading is a desire to show some anonymous solidarity, or to give the opportunity to respond without a 24 hour wait if something really piques my interest.

i tend to view non posting members as potential posters rather than non contributors or socks in waiting.

i would rather have people feel part of a community even if they dont post than feel rejected or unwanted by being removed before they are ready or interested enough to post

i worry that we are reacting to the threat of socks and disruption that may well make the place appear exclusive rather than inclusive.

we have lost a lot of cool people or had previously cool posters go rogue to the point that the core membership has diminished greatly. which may be fine with peeps.

The cool people you mention had many posts, certainly much more than 0.
The point is that 0 contribution is 0 contribution, simple as.
No-ones asking to remove low posts counts or even for that matter people who haven't posted in a long time, just 0 post members who haven't posted in yonks, simple as that.
In this way the members section remains a contributory members section which is what was intended all along, otherwise its a complete waste of time having a private members section innit :D

The rest of the forum is visible to everyone regardless of whether they sign up or not, so I fail to see what you're worried about.

How many of those people left because they got tired of the bickering initiated by socks and trolls?
That is their objective. How they get their jollys and they love to play victim when challenged.

I'm shining harsh light on this stuff because if we don't get real soon, there is unlikely to be a SZ for anyone to lurk in.
No winners there eh?

A non-contributing member is just that. Nothing more, no matter what we might wish to project onto them.
and there is nothing more exclusive that someone who decides to stand outside.

So on having your 'eyes opened', you choose to play the victim, as opposed to either joining in, or continuing as before, which was always an option since, as you're well aware, you weren't under any threat of having your account culled? I didn't think shy people went in for melodrama.

Cheerio - all the best.

I personally think we should round all the non posters up into a dilapidated shed, and force them to listen Icke being played backwards.
But now I have come to believe that the whole world is an enigma,
a harmless enigma that is made terrible by our own mad attempt to interpret it as though it had an underlying truth.

I'd also like to say directly to Thor that any community she is a member of, yet decides not to post in, is indisputably operating at reduced potential as a direct result of that decision.

I dont know if you have it on record (username mumooshka) but I tried to join SZ a while ago and for some reason, even with correct username and password, I couldn't log on. all I'd get would be the emptying of the windows for me to do it again, no message like 'username unkown' or similar... just had to do it again..tried again...and again, yet didn't work.

I tried re-registering later using another email addy, and it appeared to work ..well here I am.

Perhaps I am not alone.

I have never been able to really master logging in on my phone. That could be a contributing factor too as to why you have zero accounts, maybe they only have a phone?

Or maybe it's just me and my phone. :P

There definitely appears to be an issue with signing up for some people but not all. The trick is working out the common denominator.

I think you have the option to sign in in the front screen, or going to the forum screen.

It's when you try to do it in the front screen that it glitches. If you bypass that & go to the forum it's OK.

What is it with the "Urge to Purge" thing with non/rare posting members meme?

I rarely post but I check in every day and luv the place.

However if I am forced to post just so I don't get purged I might be forced to post unrelenting dirge just to retain my membership and surely that would be a bad thing, hey? I believe in quality rather than quantity.

Anyhoo, "Watch out, Stalin;s about..." sounds like a catchy little ditty that aptly describes the current pogrom... :)

The 'whats with' is being discussed in various threads around the forum... and as you've made posts, you wouldn't come into this equation.

It's only posters that haven't posted at all so I think your little 'stalin' dig is rather unnecessary.

I'll be quite open here chaf and say I don't believe you can have it both ways.
You cannot be a member of a community, yet not participate in that community.
That is voyeuristic and leaves everyone else to do the heavy work.
I feel quite upset that you are prepared to consume but not contribute.
Then virtually play a game of emotional blackmail to demand a seat at the table.

Oh I'm sure there will be some reading this who may be tutting at the moment but it takes little to no effort to post a link to a news story or share some music or a fun pic etc etc.

Roll your sleeves up please. Spread the load by carrying some yourself.
