In what has to be the worst case of wasteful packaging in the history of modern conveniece, a grocery store in Austria is actually selling pre-peeled bananas that have then been re-packaged in cellophane-covered foam trays.

One of the reasons bananas have been billed as the world's most perfect food is that they come with their own biodegradable packaging straight off the tree. And it's not like you need a knife or some wacky kitchen contraption to peel them—the skin practically falls off on its own. Not surprisingly most customers are up in arms over the ridiculous repackaging stunt, except for the chain's animated clientele who are optimistic the banished peels will dramatically reduce the risk of countless cartoon slipups.

What's even more maddening is that the supermarket chain's slogan urges customers to use more common sense when shopping. "Paper, plastic, or ironic, sir?" [AustrianTimes via FoodBeast]

I don't know whether to laugh or cry...

It's funny how many people pride themselves on being strong and good hunter types, etc., but can't even feed themselves or their families. If you can't prepare food and cook it you're no "hunter" at all. You're not even basically independent. But to not be bothered to (and, in time, perhaps not be able to) peel a banana.... madness.

Morrisons is passionate about food and we want our customers to enjoy it in the best possible condition. Packaging is important to ensure this. However we will only use what is necessary, because excessive packaging is not only a waste of resources, but a waste of money.

When food is thrown away it costs households money and can damage the environment, releasing harmful greenhouse gases as it decomposes. Smart packaging, which protects food in transit and extends shelf life, is good for consumers and good for the environment.

In recent years we have made significant reductions in packaging without compromising product quality. We also help customers recycle through clear on-pack guidance and recycling points in our large stores.

We are working collaboratively to reduce the carbon impact of packaging in food retail by 10% by the end of 2012. We’re on track by reducing weight, increasing recyclability and increasing recycled content in our packaging.

I'm not sure this goes far enough. You still have to pierce the cellophane, and make the effort of lifting the food towards your mouth. Surely all food should be liquefied so that you can just suck it up with a straw.
