47.6 million Americans are about to have their food stamp benefits cut, and most of them have absolutely no idea that it is about to happen. Needless to say, a lot of them are going to be very angry when they discover that they cannot buy as much food for their families anymore. The reason that this is happening is because a temporary boost to food stamp benefits that was put in during the last recession is expiring. But most of the people that are having their benefits cut will not understand this. Most of them will just be very upset that the government is “taking money away” from them.

And considering the “mini-riots” that we witnessed earlier this month when the system that processes food stamp payments went down for a few hours, it is obvious that a lot of food stamp recipients can very easily be pushed over the edge. So what would happen if we have another “debt ceiling crisis” in Washington D.C. early next year and food stamp benefits are temporarily cut off completely?

Wherever “austerity” has been tried in Europe, it has resulted in protests and riots. Could a similar thing happen in this country?

The food stamp benefit is about $272 and a family of four will have a reduction of around $36 dollars - about 1/8th less. Will people be rioting over this? Maybe. It leads me to wonder what measures would create riots in the UK. The British don't seem to riot over anything except the prospect of breaking into shops for free plasma TVs and mobile phones.

Oooh...YOU BITCH!

I've often wondered about this myself actually. Sometimes, I look around and think for whatever reason, we're all just a bit more docile and long-suffering than perhaps we once were.

I could blame telly. I could say it was something in the water. I could blame chemtrails. The long and short of it is though, that we're all just too busy trying to make it from day to day for the most part, and that's exactly how this works.

It really couldn't be working out better if the whole thing had been planned. NARF, NARF.

Like my old gran used to say, what we need is another bloody, good war!

I think the reason that you see a lack of militancy in Britain is that the people have never experienced what virtually every country in mainland Europe has. It's never been occupied, and never experienced fascism or totalitarianism. Of course, we know that the establishment has been rotten to the core from day one, but many people, probably most people, have very warm and fuzzy feelings about the establishment that are somehow conjured from a series of associations with the flag, the Queen, the BBC, etc. Fundamentally, people in Britain still believe that their institutions are 'good', or if not good at least not fundamentally corrupt. And they don't have any recent historical examples to suggest otherwise. And, in particular, I think the BBC has a monumental influence over people's impression of what's going on. And as people generally hold the BBC in high esteem, this has a big impact on how they perceive things.

Whereas in Europe, Spain was fascist until quite recently - many Spaniards still get misty eyed about Franco - Germany and Italy were infamously so, and of course Germany had the Berlin wall until just over twenty years ago, Portugal had a revolution in the late 1960s, their constitution was completely rewritten in the late 1970s, France was occupied by Germany and the French revolution is a fundamental part of their culture, the Dutch were occupied by Germany, ditto Belgium in two World Wars, all of the Eastern bloc countries have experienced incredible authoritarianism and state corruption, Greece and Turkey have had a very complex and tempestuous recent history. There's only really Switzerland and Monaco that have managed to stay out of all this, and that's because they have served obvious purposes for the establishment.

Whereas Britain has never been occupied within living memory, and the establishment has incredibly skillfully created a shared history for us which is extremely nostalgic and which makes our political system and leaders look exemplary. My family are almost unbearably nostalgic about the past, it drives me up the fucking wall, but they're only really responding in the way that they've been trained to do. So I think the average person doesn't have these reference points of social upheaval. I can imagine in the Czech Republic or East Germany, families get together and reminisce about the times that they were separated by the Berlin Wall or when they thought military police were going to cart them all off somewhere, but we don't have anything similar, our cultural reference points are the coronation and Dad's Army. It's no wonder that you end up with a pretty insipid culture.

The riots in London started <apparently> because the police shot Mark Duggan, possibly in cold blood. The spread of the rioting seemingly happened because the police weren't really doing much about it, and it was at that point people saw it as an opportunity to go looting, and so it spread to various cities. I think it indicates that there is quite a lot of malcontent just underneath the surface especially in more impoverished areas, and it could well happen again at any point given the right triggers.

The London riots were an experiment. Someone, somewhere, just wanted to make sure they had all bases covered imo. Call it a 'drill'.

That gave Cameron the opportunity to introduce the penalty of losing your council home / benefits if caught rioting. And remember the deliberate blurring of distinction between rioting and protesting - not to mention committing 'terrorism'. Like there weren't already laws in place to deal with the idiot looters. And the public cheered his decisiveness. :fap:

What's next? Workers who take to the streets in dissent loose their employment perhaps? After all, there are always strategically placed agent provocateurs to engineer trouble & colour the public's view as to what's really going on at these gatherings. And some who'd cheer the chance of those jobs becoming available.

When you know for a 100% fact that Jobcentre workers are told to push as many people off benefit as possible, and are attacked by their manages when they fail to meet their quotas, then anything is possible.

And explains why the police just sat back, and let them get on with it.
