...get chalking*. Just learnt that a woman was arrested recently in the US for chalking "YouTube WTC 7" on the 'sidewalk'. Heard about it on Alex Jones' radio show and he was saying he was going to go out, buy some chalk and go write that exact same phrase somewhere*.

Love him or hate him I think this is a great idea. What could the offense be? Criminal damage? More damage occurs when someone walks on pavement than using chalk on it. Littering? That's a joke; then leaving mud somewhere would also be littering.

Chalk occurs naturally in the UK; think 'white cliffs of Dover'. So leaving chalk on the ground is no more an offense than leaving a muddy footprint; rain will wash it away and no damage is done. So it cannot be an offense*.

If Parliament wants to pass a law prohibiting writing "YouTube WTC 7" on the pavement they know what to do. Until then it is unregulated*, in the same way using a megaphone is for example.

*On your own property of course. If you create a mess and someone has to do some work to clear it up there might be a legal problem. So don't do that. That said they might have to prove they did actually take the time to do something and didn't just wait for the rain...

That article differentiates between "chalking on streets or graffiti", I'm almost certain the law does. I notice it never actually got as far as challenging that.

There are two 24-hour supermarkets within 10/15 minutes walk of where I am. I expect at least one can sell me some chalk. I'm thinking that getting out there overnight so that people will see the messages on their way to work is the thing to do, so...

"YouTube WTC Building 7" on the forecourt of the station(s) people flood into heading to London and anywhere else I expect there'll be a load of pedestrians before it next rains is the way to go.

How often to you take notice of things wrote on walls and pavements. Maybe good for self as a form of personal rebellion but not much good for anything else.

Thanks for reading, researching and replying but all that article implies is that Inspector Garry Jones of the North Wales Police and the Mayor of Bangor don't think this sort of thing should be tolerated.

What statute would criminalise chalk on public asphalt? Read my original post in this thread again and you'll see why I don't see any way criminal damage or littering could apply. Can you think of some other offense?

Is this an argument for doing nothing? I can quote various things I've seen written on walls, even on streets, over the year. Pavement artists are popular in London, using chalk in places such as Leicester Square.

Come on, I'm so tired of the "what;s the point?", "there's nothing you can do", et cetera mantras. This story is a perfect excuse to go out and do something. Chalk "YouTube WTC 7" or similar, take a photo, share it here, send it to AJ; we can have some fun and some people will check it out out of curiosity.

People about to get on a train to London are as likely as not at least to have a smartphone on them; they might end up watching building seven collapse for the first time on a commuter train. It's a perfect time to plant the message, just before some dead time with nothing much better to do than watch a viseo on your iPhone...

Then you missed this bit .....
Hazel Mercer and friend Charli Lyth were each fined £80 when a police officer saw them drawing hearts and rainbows on the pavement in Bangor.
The fact those fines were revoked later was a discretionary act.

For the record: I think it's insane to classify this as and offence and would contest it myself in court if charged.
My only intention here is to inform folks that it MAY carry a risk, so they can take that into account.

I'm not pissing on anyone's parade.
Posting shit on facebook shouldn't lead to charges but it does, often.

Actually, some friends and I noticed a tiny, tiny sticker on a wall in Brighton with something similar on it. You wouldn't even have noticed it on a conscious level ordinarily, but we happened to have stopped right in front of it to light a fag.

It was peculiar, because wheras I usually just stfu about these things, my mates actually turned to me and wanted to know what the sticker was about.

They were issued tickets without any kind of court looking at it. That means nothing. It'd take quite a lot of time to explain but I have a great deal more experience of this kind of thing than most. One example is I introduced the pedicabs to London guessing correctly that many people would think they were illegal, then winning the case when it went to court.

The trick is to read the statutes and look for case law. Google does an approximation and what are people finding? Stuff that hasn't been to court. My OP explains it well enough I think; if it was criminal damage then so would be walking; if it were littering then so would a muddy footprint be. It's a loophole if you like.

So, again, stop making excuses ;) The only reason I haven't gone out yet is I'm waiting for the gap between the last trains arriving from London and first trains going out. Someone over at DIF has already gone out and chalked something!

'Fag' :) I worked quite internationally for a while with a US boss called Peter. We we in our Boston office where we'd arranged a meeting. I walked in late with everyone else patiently waiting so felt I had to say something.
