Andy, I think we all hope it's being blown out of proportion. Andrew was bigger, Katrina was bigger (I think)...but on the off chance they aren't just sending people on a wild goose chase, or god forbid covering for a much bigger storm or a distraction method for something else...it's important to keep following it and keep track of information in case something does come of it.

Warnings: Monster storm may take Great Lakes wave heights to 33 feet

The Great Lakes are expected to feel the effects Monday and Tuesday as monster storm Sandy makes it way up the Atlantic.

A gale warning has been issued for Lake Huron from 4 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, with waves expected to reach a maximum of 17 to 24 feet. The National Weather Service in Chicago on Sunday issued a gale warning for Lake Michigan, predicting waves as high as 33 feet by Tuesday. Vessels were advised to seek safe harbor.

Gusts as high as 45-50 mph are forecast for Tuesday. That means the wind could snap twigs on trees and might also cause minor structural damage, according to the Beaufort scale, which measures how wind affects conditions on land and at sea.

A high wind watch is in effect through Tuesday for Port Huron and parts of the Thumb.

"As that storm moves inland, then we'll have the stronger rain bands come over on Tuesday and Wednesday affecting our area and also picking up the winds," said Debra Elliott, an observation program leader with the weather service station in White Lake Township.

The Coast Guard is advising mariners to stay off the waters while moving smaller vessels to sheltered areas as well as readying air boats and crews for possible rescue efforts. Officials also plan to talk with port partners on Monday about contingency plans.

"We're taking our precautions and preparations to deal with the worst," said Don Chace, search and rescue controller with the Coast Guard's Detroit sector.

By 11 p.m., most mariners appeared to have left Lake Huron and Lake Erie, he said.

"They've taken heed to the warning," he said. The two vessels crossing the water shortly before midnight still had time to reach their destinations or head for cover if the weather took a turn for the worse in the subsequent several hours, he said.

Despite the constant precipitation, "we're not going to get inundated like they are on the East Coast," said the weather service's Elliott. "We'll see steady rains, but we're not going to see heavy rain."

Still, with the high winds and temperatures hovering in the 40s, "it's going to be pretty nasty weather," she said.

DTE Energy officials on Sunday said the utility had not been asked to assist with any recovery efforts along the Eastern Seaboard, which likely would be finalized with companies closest to the affected areas once the storm hits.

Sandy, a Category 1 hurricane with sustained winds of 75 mph as of Sunday evening, was blamed for 65 deaths in the Caribbean before it began churning up the Eastern Seaboard, where 50 million people reside in the heavily populated corridor. As of 5 p.m., it was centered about 530 miles southeast of New York City moving at 15 mph, with hurricane-force winds extending an incredible 175 miles from its center.

Well I reckon if it is all fear-mongering exaggeration, people should sue for causing distress, & the prophets of doom should be imprisoned for 6 years (like the Italian seismologists) for getting it dramatically wrong. Personally though, I'd be well out of the region by now.

Which is good, of course, but a little bit of flying debris would be pretty neat. As long as no-one was hurt. Well, unless it was 'funny' hurt. That probably sounds bad as well.

I'll be pleased if your assessment is accurate, Andy. Though it would make me suspicious to think they've gone to great extremes to vacate the area unnecessarily.

I can't actually make out what's going on, because the predicted wind speed has increased by 15mph 1st thing this morning, but the very few live cam links my bag-of-poop laptop will allow to work for me just show places looking like still, calm ghost towns.

RA, I am surprised that you have never heard of getting into a bathtub! ! am worried about you and your city ways. Does your communication plan include someone who is at least 100 miles west of you? If not, give a shout out. You will probably never need it but it is no big deal to have that on hand just in case.

Andy, I don't even know where to begin with you. First of all, Americans are not paranoid. They are couragous, defiant and completely oblivioius to the fact that something bad could ever happen to them.



And, if they are anything like me, they do not have provisions ready if the grid were ever to go down.

You might view this differently if the hybrid Frankenstorm was headed your way. No one has ever seen anything like it before so wouldn't you be more curious as well as cautious?

And you know what? I think that you would find that Americans are more like you than you think. Last night I sampled about 10 different talk radio stations up and down the east coast because I was very interested in hearing how people were feeling and if they were ready for the worst case scenario. Every single station, every last one of them, was talking about either sports or politics.

Stupid radio stations... why the hell are they talking politics and sports when their about to get leveled by a wave? Reminds me of CNN yesterday, they spent at least an hour or two on how the hurricane was screwing up the political campaign.
