ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) - Superstorm Sandy slammed into the New Jersey coastline with 80 mph winds Monday night and hurled an unprecedented 13-foot surge of seawater at New York City, flooding its tunnels, subway stations and the electrical system that powers Wall Street. At least 10 U.S. deaths were blamed on the storm, which brought the presidential campaign to a halt a week before Election Day.

For New York City at least, Sandy was not the dayslong onslaught many had feared, and the wind and rain that sent water sloshing into Manhattan from three sides began dying down within hours.

Still, the power was out for hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers and an estimated 5.2 million people altogether across the East. And the full extent of the storm's damage across the region was unclear, and unlikely to be known until daybreak.

Best hopes for the people facing this storm.

25 seconds in :hide:
Not long after Hurricane Sandy made landfall on Monday night, a New Yorker filmed this video that reportedly depicts a transformer exploding at the Con Ed power plant in downtown Manhattan. Shot from across the East River, the video shows flames erupting from the power plant, then a massive ball of blue light flaring into the sky. More than 250,000 people in lower Manhattan were plunged into darkness as the city lost power on Monday night.

Re: At least 13 dead, 5.2 million without power

Superstorm Sandy slammed into the East Coast Monday, killing at least 13 people, hurling a record-breaking 13-foot surge of seawater at New York City and knocking out power to an eastimated 5.2 million people.

The massive storm was downgraded from a hurricane after it barged ashore in southern New Jersey, bringing more than 85-mph winds and a roiling wall of seawater as it moved through New York City. It sent water surging into two major commuter tunnels and into subway stations and tracks. It was unclear how much water had come in.

The 13 deaths were reported in New Jersey, New York, West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Connecticut. Some of the victims were killed by falling trees. Police in Toronto said a woman was killed by a falling sign as high winds closed in on Canada's largest city.

The power was out for hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers and an estimated 5.2 million people altogether across the East, with the full extent of the storm's damage across the region unclear and unlikely to be known until daybreak.

The MTA cut power to some subway tunnels in lower Manhattan, after water came into the stations and tracks. The MTA couldn't say at this point how much damage had been done, and how much time it would take to restore everything to normal.

Consolidated Edison was prompted to cut power to part of the area to avoid storm damage. A large portion of Manhattan's FDR Drive was under water.

Reuters reported late Monday that there had been an explosion at a Consolidated Edison power station on the east side of Manhattan. Despite earlier reports, ConEd said on Twitter no one was trapped inside the plant.

Fox news - sorry, when I try to copy the link, my lappy freezes up & times out.

Also, damage cost estimated so far at $3bn. Or $5bn, depending on which headline you read.

Other headlines put the death toll at 16.

I don't believe Dick Cheney was in the area affected. ;)

But my sympathies go to the friends and family of the 16 casualties and to all those affected by the damage.

No doubt NYC will not suffer the fate of NO. :sadno:

Oddly mirroring each other these two events. :sulk:

Let's hope that they all made it and will now receive shelter like all the other citizens. Perhaps that could be seen as a silver lining.

You're right Black Cloud - there are quite a lot of homeless people who apparently live on those subways which are now flooded. It's hard to imagine anyone looking after them, but maybe they did, as there were quite a lot of photos posted around the net last night of them looking entirely deserted. It's easy enough to keep things you don't want seen out of shot though, so again, I don't feel confident.

Sad to say Gilly, it's NY... no one gives a rats ass about the homeless, seen and not heard kind of thing, preferably not seen either. I hope they all found somewhere to go though...heard a bit about leaving under the city once.

Barry has spoken.
US President Barack Obama has declared a "major disaster" in New York state after storm Sandy smashed into the US East Coast, causing flooding and cutting power to millions.
A record 4m (13ft) tidal surge sent seawater cascading into large parts of New York City's subway system.
Across the city, a power sub-station exploded, a hospital was evacuated and fire destroyed 50 homes.
At least 20 people are reported dead across several US states.

Until the issue of the homeless was metioned here I hadn't even considered it. I dread to think what the homeless population is in a town the size of NY.

Certainly makes for grim reading.
A blizzard in western Maryland caused a pileup of tractor-trailers that blocked part of Interstate 68 on slippery Big Savage Mountain.

Blizzards as well!
