Thats a fair bit more than 15k....its me :D

I'm guessing you mean 15k is the modal income perhaps?
According to here:

www.ons.gov.uk/ons/rel/ashe/annual-surve...l-bulletin-2012.html
In April 2012 median gross weekly earnings for full-time employees were £506, up 1.5% from £498 in 2011.

But if you take London in particular and the South East in general out of the figures, it makes a massive difference. For most areas the average is about £20,000:

www.ons.gov.uk/ons/rel/ashe/annual-surve...ab-Regional-earnings

This would leave £16,000 after NI and Income Tax:

www.incometaxcalculator.org.uk/index.php...&calculate=Calculate

So maybe the Guardian is underestimating the average slightly, but probably not by much.

Tasmania is meant to be cheap in parts too, but I bet you sure as hell need to be self sufficient there, lol :)

Eastern Europe tends to get overlooked too, that said, the lingo's not easy.

The things that influence me the most are English language and laws/culture first and foremost as I have family to worry about I guess.
Then ability to easily move and stay there.

It kinda restricts the options :)

If I was single again I'd be looking at places like Slovakia though.

You have to love those average wage figures doncha. Most down here are on minimum wage, £6 and some shrapnel p/h which on a 40 hour week is 12.5k pre tax.

Christ, it sucks to see how badly off we are and how a wide range of salary doesn't really make much of a difference, especially if you have kids.

Just how T.F. do you pay for a family on that?
There must be a huuuuge bill for working family tax credits.

My own salary is way way more than 20k lol...yet I'm still pretty much slap in the middle overall.

You're down in Cornwall now aren't you? A lot of these beautiful parts of the country are bad in terms of jobs, but that's probably Agenda 21 related.

Now, try again is this the £140,000 one?

A proper house price for 20k would be 60k
And even that would be stretching it to the limit over 25 years.

I don't intend to ever mortgage again, buy it for cash next time, if there is one.

Its real value is prolly more like 15k.
Stupid price tbh. Then again thats precisely why we're in this bloody mess to begin with. Sheer idiocy.

The whole house price thing in Britain (predominantly the South) is a mockery of a sham of a piss take. If it weren't so serious it'd be laffable.

So, as it stands at the moment Jonny and Jenny leave uni with the same useless degree as thousands of others and have to take any job they can find. Let's say they find something paying 18k a year. How do they buy that house?
It's gonna reqiure a hefty deposit, where do they get that? Their savings? A bit of parental remortage jiggery?

And all the time their student loan hangs like the Sword of Damocles* waiting for them to earn enough for it to drop.

I just can't wrap my head around it.

Why do people worry about student loans? Unless it's changed I don't have to pay owt back unless I'm earning £15,000 p.a. and even then it's not at any great rate. Easiest 10 grand I ever made!

Its easy to get your head around when thats precisely the very situation our rulers want us in.
They have to keep us working enslaved and docile for life somehow, so they entrain us from birth to think this is the way it is.
