Major UK banks must raise a total of £25bn in extra capital by the end of 2013 to guard against potential losses, the Bank of England (BoE) has said.

In a statement, the BoE's Financial Policy Committee (FPC) said only some banks need to raise the cash, but did not name them.

It said banks could face losses of about £50bn over the next three years, relating to bad loans and fines.

The order is the first from the FPC, the new financial stability regulator.

It said UK banks and building societies could lose billions of pounds over the next three years relating to "high-risk" loans in the UK commercial property sector and vulnerable eurozone economies.

They may also lose money through fines, and require extra capital to support a "more prudent approach to risk".

Some banks already have enough capital to cover these costs, the FPC said, but others are short.

I am suprised that banks in the UK havent started charging £20 a month for an individual to bank with them.

Do they charge companies to bank with them?

Depending on the prices the banks decided on I reckon they could reach the 25bn mark.

The adult population of Uk is over 48 million many will have more than one account.

They already do in Ireland, all the banks charge people to simply have an account, they pay sod all interest on current accounts in fact they even have the gall to show that they're lending the money out on bank statements and they charge you to use cash machines, direct debits you name it. Then the govt also charge whats called 'DIRT' a tax for having a bank account then they tax you for having debit and credit cards.
They also charge you 50c per cheque.

One of the things I frequently harp on about is that currency, if used, HAS to solely be a means of exchange. One job and one job only. No profit possible to be had from it of itself.

Here is a right in your face example of just how far away from that the system is. We've allowed ourselves to be herded into a world where a bank account is pretty much as central to our continuance as air or water or food. The days of a brown envelope of cash on Friday are long gone. As are the days of the giro...

You HAVE to have a bank account to trade at all within the system and any currency you use goes through the banks. The whole time they are holding it, they own it. They FR it to Fuck, charge high interest on credit and are now well on the way to charging us all just for "service" they provide. The central banks, governments and high street banks and our own apathy are indistinguishable in their complicity for allowing this situation.

It's not just that there's profit to be had from currency. The MOST profit of all is had from currency...

Which goes against simple common sense.
Which lies at the heart of huge social injustices.
Which strikes deep at the notion of us being civilized.
