The United States bumped up against its borrowing limit Sunday, forcing the Treasury Department to employ “extraordinary measures” to make sure the government keeps paying its bills.

After a brief hiatus, the nation’s debt limit has returned as a major hurdle for Washington to overcome, and one that will play a central role in fiscal fights heading into the fall.

Congress agreed to suspend the nation’s $16.4 trillion borrowing limit the last time they approached it, at the beginning of the year. But that suspension expired May 19.

The latest numbers from the Treasury Department indicate that the overall debt of the United States swelled by about $300 billion during the period of the suspension, and now totals roughly $16.7 trillion.

Unfunded

It's the way that it's reported, the tone that it is reported in (if anyone even bothers to report on it at all). It is stated in the article:
Agencies have begun making contingency plans ahead of the 1 October deadline to pass a new funding resolution.

The Senate has passed a bill to fund the government until 15 November.
You'd think that would be pretty newsworthy, wouldn't you? Here's the BBC world news front page, I've ringed where this article appears:

2j1d

That's bad enough in itself, but here's an absolutely despicable video that the BBC have also produced on the subject:

www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-24306152

Hey, the US government is completely flat fucking broke, it's all a big laugh, isn't it? Obviously this doesn't touch on the most important consequences; ie, in the medium to long-term the US has no legitimate way of meeting social security commtiments and many other liabilities. The only way they can even keep the engine of government running (without pissing off the major corporate and banking interest that hold inordinate power) is to keep raising the debt ceiling.

This is why people are confused because they're so wilfully and deliberately mislead. The BBC is absolutely culpable in this, not accidentally, it has to be deliberate. Yes, there are loads of fucking stupid, inept people working for the BBC, but it's just too systematic to be a coincidence (leaving aside all of the times they've been caught deliberately lying).

Again, this is why you can go out into the street and tell people America is flat broke, Britain is flat broke, they will never recover, the currencies are going to collapse, the Eurozone will collapse, this is a mathematical certainty, banks are going to start operating bail ins in Europe and North America on a widescale basis, this will affect you...and they'll look at you like you're speaking Double Dutch, even though it's blindingly obvious.

Erm....seems they really are trying to keep this quiet...looks like the time frame is midnight Monday!
It appears investors (CDS markets, VIX, T-Bills anxiety) were on to something as each side in the looming government shutdown debate seems mired in their own belief that the other has more to lose. House Republicans are aiming to hold a vote today on a bill to extend government funding through December 15th and ensuring the military gets paid on any shutdown, but...

*HOUSE PLAN WOULD DELAY OBAMACARE ONE YEAR, LAWMAKER SAYS
And as the WSJ reports, Harry Reid has already stated that "we are going to accept nothing as it related to Obamacare," before adjourning the Senate until Monday afternoon (narrowing the gap for a shutdown-avoidance vote). The shutdown-blame-game has begun as it seems the ball is back in the Senate's court...

*HOUSE PROPOSAL WOULD FUND GOVERNMENT THROUGH DEC. 15
*HOUSE PLAN WOULD DELAY OBAMACARE ONE YEAR, LAWMAKER SAYS
*BOEHNER SAYS WILL BE `UP TO THE SENATE' TO AVOID SHUTDOWN
Via WSJ,

The strategy keeps House Republicans on a collision course with Senate Democrats. "We are going to accept nothing as it relates to Obamacare,'' Mr. Reid said after the Senate approved its spending plan.

...

Senate Majority Leader Mr. Reid on Friday added to the pressure on the House by adjourning the Senate until Monday afternoon, narrowing the window of time for any last-minute legislative volleys between the chambers.

...

"The president is now demanding that we increase the debt limit without engaging in any kind of bipartisan discussions about addressing our spending problem,'' said Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R., Wash.), who gave the address on behalf of Republicans. "He wants to take the easy way out - exactly the kind of foolishness that got us here in the first place."

...

If the House acts today and sends the measure to the Senate, fresh pressure will fall on Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D., Nev.) to call the Senate back in session quickly. Mr. Reid said Friday that the Senate would accept no changes or amendments to the funding bill it approved on Friday. He scheduled the Senate to return Monday afternoon, hard upon the Monday midnight deadline for Congress to come to agreement on a funding plan.

...

The standoff brings the federal government to the brink of a shutdown with little obvious room for resolution. Unlike in previous showdowns, there have been no major negotiations among congressional leaders or with the White House.

...

Mr. Boehner, said: "The House will take action that reflects the fundamental fact that Americans don't want a government shutdown, and they don't want the train wreck that is Obamacare.''

If no agreement is reached by midnight Monday, federal agencies will have to stop providing many services and furlough many employees. Services and agency functions deemed essential would continue.

If House lawmakers alter the Senate's spending bill, the measure will return to the Senate, where legislation can take days to navigate over procedural hurdles.

you took the words from me mouth wub, totally agree and yes jane, it is being kept out of the big headlines atm.
if we all keep clicking the bbc article maybe we can get it into the 'most popular' box. that would get more to read it :dunno:

ETA: When my beloved football club, Pompey suffered the indignation of being the first Premier League team to go bust, I wanted to know how it happened. This was the catalyst for my own personal awakening into how the money game is rigged. I spent 2 weeks researching, connecting characters, court cases, registered business locations etc and discovered a global web of corruption working through football. I found it worked hand in hand with the arms, sex slave and drugs trade. I found the banks were cognizant and complicit. I found the British Royal family were enabling it through the tax havens. I found the politicians that demand wars were enabling it and enforcing it. I woke the fuck up.

I wrote a 3 page article and posted it on the now defunct BBC 606 'forum', choosing to keep the piece within the confines of football corruption and the next circle out; sex slavery, drugs and money laundry. All evidenced with references and links.
The piece lasted on the site for around 12 hours before it was removed and I was banned. Luckily quite a few die hard Pompey and Scummer fans saw it before the chop and there was a fair amount of chatter on the site for a short while. Hopefully some were inspired to look into shit for themselves.
I was not happy.
Contacted the BBC via email and telephone.
Subsequently escalated to dispute. (I'm a bugger for researching and quoting statutes to these people)
Upheld with explanation. (been socking there ever since ;) )

The explanation being people high up in PFC and the FA had got on the blower and threatened to sue for defamation.
The piece contained nothing whatsoever that was not 100% verifiable. The BBC and their lawyers could have torn them a new one in any court, anywhere..............if they'd wanted to.
Draw your own conclusions
The future closure of the 606 forum was announced not so long after.

Hence, why I ask when people will see it for what it is? Surely it isn't that hard to see? Everyone has seen water going down a plughole aint they? Everyone's seen a graph of an "expidential" curve? Why aren't people asking what happens on the other side of the plughole? Why aren't people asking what happens to money when the debt ceiling leaves the planet, heads off through the black hole that is the Sun and emerges in their colons?
