Xylaria:
I did a week in january where I ate nothing but what I could forage or had previously foraged from the wild. Whne writing it up at the end of the week, I was trying to work out if i had eaten anything vitamin d in it. I like most people have been brain washed into thinking diary and animalfats are the best source of dietery vitD. They arent, wild mushrooms are. They plentful at during the season when we need dietary vit D. If shop bought at left in a window to get light that also make Vit D.

Cheers, for that info Xylaria, I like mushrooms, would be bit dubious about picking and eating them myself as I've heard even the experts can get it wrong.
The tip about exposing the shop bought ones to sunlight is much appreciated.I didn't know that :)

This is a great idea xylaria, although I've never had the balls to do it myself. I also live in a city which would make it a slightly more difficult chore.

I often think, many illnesses and woes could be overcome if we all tried to revert to this way of eating. I reckon we'd all do very well (better than we are now) if we only ate what we would naturally be able to either forage for or kill and prepare in the wild (if you are so inclined).

I don't think you'd even need to consider things like calorie intake or blood-sugar levels if we did - it's what we're designed to do after all. As ever, nature has provided everything we need. The problems arise when we decide to package it all up and charge for it.

What were your other conclusions when writing it up? Do you think you could have easily done longer?

I felt really healthy on it, after a few days. It was january, so the diet was quite repetative. It was mostly mussles, wild parnsip, preforaged hazelnuts, and some other greens. I did eat bulrushes but they were fiddly for the effort. There was no grains. I let myself have a spoonful fo butter a day to add to cooking, they would of been not fat at otherwise. I got a squirrel on the last day. Hunted for snails and woodlice and failed to find any. i could of gone on for longer. I keep meaning to do it again soon.

PCOS

Vitamin D's protection against disruption of insulin function may explain another study that found vitamin D protected women from polycyctic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a common hormonal imbalance that may cause changes in the menstrual cycle, small cysts on the ovaries, and difficulties becoming pregnant. Women with PCOS frequently experience metabolic disturbances - on particular, they often suffer insulin resistance.

In the study, women with PCOS received 20,000 IU of vitamin D3 weekly for 24 weeks (almost 3000 IU daily). At the end, 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels significantly increased and were correlated with a significant decrease of fasting and stimulated glucose levels after vitamin D treatment. Triglyceride and estradiol levels also significantly decreased. (Estradiol is a form of estrogen produced in the ovaries. Women with PCOS experience elevated estrogen levels, and it's not uncommon to see elevated triglyceride levels as well.) Half of the women previously affected by menstrual disturbances reported improvement of menstrual frequency. These results suggest that vitamin D treatment may improve glucose metabolism and menstrual frequency in women with PCOS.

I forgot to mention that the reason a link is not provided in my previous post is because I transcribed from a magazine.

I don't know if it's already been mentioned, but if you suffer from low moods, which I do frequently (or rather 'did'), D3 (along with other bits and pieces) seems to really help.

I have been a bit skint lately and didn't have enough to get my usual vits for a couple of weeks. I really noticed the difference and as soon as I resumed taking my usual dosage, I felt chipper within the hour!

Not bouncing off the walls chipper, but more on an even keel, if you like.

While I'm here, does anyone have any good info on the effects of tobacco on D3 levels? I did have once upon a time but can't find it at the moment. Specifically, I'd like info on long-term effects on levels and if it eventually actually makes it harder for your body to produce, even with abundant sunshine.

My partner contracted cancer about a year ago and first blood tests showed that she was massively Vit D3 deficient. After living in Australia for a while and seeing the results of sun on white skin long term (turns skin to crocodile like) and massive campaigning and education about sunscreen, she'd followed the advice. In short, she had slip, slapped, slopped and stayed white for a number of years.

She took Vit D3 supps but what Abo says about the sun for 20 mins a day, is exactly what I've read about. Vit D3 plays a massive part in health and cancer prevention. I accept that the sun does age the skin but really it does make one feel better and also helps deal with skin problems like dermitis.

In the past, we were generally outside more. Our indoor lifestyle is killing us. I have also stopped wearing SUNGLASSES. I can't remember the source of info but we absorb a lot of energy through our eyes too.

In any case, none of us want to be putting poisons on our skin. Has anyone found just zinc based or sun non toxic sun blocks? I've not looked for any and not had to bother yet but interested all the same.

Thank you icke is right. I'm sorry to read about your partner, but am glad you are wise to the d3 element. It effects EVERYTHING and for one reason or another, we are constantly brain-washed to block it.

It really has improved some conditions I've suffered from for years and it never occurred to me to check that those conditions may well be caused by, if not aggravated by a lack of something. At first, I thought it was just diet, then I stumbled across the d3 element and learned all I could about it.

Alls I can say is there would be a lot fewer ill people about if this stuff were truly talked about a bit more (so you can probably come to your own conclusions about why it isn't!). You also want the lanollin derived type if you're taking supplements, as apparently that's the most bio-available (in place of a good shot of actual sun-shine, that is).

And pay no attention to tiny dosages either. Far as I'm aware and from my own experience, there are few side effects to large dosages, despite what you may be told. At one point, I was aiming for 50,000 mg a week, in terms of being deficient (plus smoking, which depletes just about everything after so many years, combined with a crappy diet).

And you don't want D shots from your GP either, as this is the wrong kind and will not be as beneficial. This is the first thing they'll try and sell you if you involve them at all in blood tests.

I tend not to bother with sunscreen any more and just use common sense re the sun. Imo, we all managed perfectly well pre-sunscreen. There is a skin cream called Sudocrem which is quite mild and zinc based. Good for painting bits like the nose that tend to get exposed just from walking around. I haven't tried any others.

I hope your partner made a recovery and thanks again for posting.

EDIT: Again, I'm not medically qualified and anything I've posted so far is just my opinion and experiences based on my own illnesses and what has helped. As ever, research for yourself if you're unsure about something.

I agree Abo, I've read a lot too about the amounts that we need and can generate with our skin. In short, I think it's virtually impossible to overdose on Vit D3 and nearly all other naturally made vitamins. Plus the fact that we can do with far more than we're recommended.

I was interested in some sort of block, when I have to stay out in the sun all day, for example. Maybe just a zinc paste would be OK.....

Partner recovered from Cancer with naturally based therapies and diet, thanks. No chemo, no radiotherapy bollox.

Can you say what probs cleared up with sunlight? My skin has got a lot better, even though I took Vit D3 supps though the winter until the sun came enough to whip the shirt off.

Brilliant news about your partner! Thanks for sharing.

Specifically, with me, it's psoriasis that's causing me issues. I also occassionally suffer from psoriatic arthritis in the feet. There has been a marked improvement since supplementing with large amounts of d3, particularly in lieau of actual sun exposure.

It's also really helped me with mood swings, too. As mentioned previously, I didn't have the money for the pills recently for about a month, and I really noticed the difference.

The issue is still present, but funds don't really allow for a brilliant diet or even a regular supply of vitamins. I do what I can, however, and so far there has been some improvements, much more so than pills and creams prescribed by the doctor. The 'attacks' or eruptions have all but disappeared and I just need to deal with the dryness now. Previous to supplementation, it was happening every 2-3 days, so I know for me, this is really working.

It's worth noting however, that d3 really acts as a catalyst or 'key' as far as I'm aware. If you're deficient (which most people are) your body will be unable to process those elements is does have access to appropriately, which will ultimately lead to illness. Once you realise this and rectify any deficiency, you should start to see improvements. It's then appropriate to consider other supplementation/change in diet as your body will actually be able to make use of what you are giving it, perhaps for the first time in years!
