This is blatantly going to be a cut and paste from a few different websites that I've read, but I'll try and put most things in one post that I've found interesting about it.

People use it for all kinds of things, most notably in food and as a beauty treatment. It's not cheap, but if you're going to use it for food, then you'll be better off buying the cold pressed extra virgin stuff for reasons that should be obvious. You can however (in the U.K. at least) by the refined stuff quite cheap in most local Asian stores for roughly £2.50 a tub. The cold pressed extra virgin is often upwards of a tenner though, but worth it in my opinion.

Anyway, so here goes..

Health Benefits of Coconut Oil

The health benefits of coconut oil include hair care, skin care, stress relief, cholesterol level maintenance, weight loss, boosted immune system, proper digestion and regulated metabolism. It also provides relief from kidney problems, heart diseases, high blood pressure, diabetes, HIV, and cancer, while helping to improve dental quality and bone strength. These benefits of oil can be attributed to the presence of lauric acid, capric acid and caprylic acid, and their respective properties, such as antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-fungal, antibacterial and soothing qualities.

Coconut oil is used extensively in tropical countries especially India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Philippines etc., which have a good production of coconut oil. At one time, the oil was also popular in western countries like the United States and Canada, but there was a strong propaganda campaign in the 1970s spread by the corn oil and soy oil industry against coconut oil. Coconut oil was considered harmful for the human body due to its high saturated fat content until the last decade (2000s) when people began to question the claims of the propaganda. Next, let’s look into some more details of how coconut oil works in our body.

C is the 3rd letter in the ISO basic Latin alphabet..The coconut palm (also, cocoanut), Cocos nucifera, is a member of the family Arecaceae (palm family)..The term is derived from 16th-century Portuguese and Spanish coco, meaning head or skull, from the 3 small holes on the coconut shell that resemble human facial features. It is the only accepted species in the genus Cocos = 3030Nuts...

Link, again.

I highlighted the bit that would under normal circumstances appeal to your conspiracy perpetuated brain. I also highlighted the bit that talks about the high saturated fat content.

So let's hear another side to the fats found in coconuts and coconut oil.
Coconut oil is about 2/3 medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs), also called medium-chain triglycerides or MCTs. These types of fatty acids produce a whole host of health benefits.

Coconut oil is nature's richest source of these healthy MCFAs.

By contrast, most common vegetable or seed oils comprise long-chain fatty acids (LCFAs), also known as long-chain triglycerides or LCTs.
MCFAs are smaller. They permeate cell membranes easily, and do not require special enzymes to be utilized effectively by your body.
MCFAs are easily digested, thus putting less strain on your digestive system.
MCFAs are sent directly to your liver, where they are immediately converted into energy rather than being stored as fat.
MCFAs actually help stimulate your body's metabolism, leading to weight loss.
Heart disease is the number one cause of death in the U.S. And heart disease is often a silent killer. The first sign of cardiovascular disease is commonly a heart attack, and sadly, over one-third of heart attacks are fatal.

And despite the propaganda, the truth is this: it is UNSATURATED fats that are primarily involved in heart disease, not the naturally occurring saturated fats, as you have been led to believe.14

Plus, the polyunsaturated fats in vegetable and seed oils encourage the formation of blood clots by increasing platelet stickiness. Coconut oil helps to promote normal platelet function.

Saturated fatty acids in coconut: Most of them are medium chain triglycerides, which are supposed to assimilate well in the body’s systems. Lauric acid is the chief contributor, representing more than forty percent of the total, followed by capric acid, caprylic acid, myristic acid and palmitic.
How is lauric acid used by our body?

The human body converts lauric acid into monolaurin, which is supposedly helpful in dealing with viruses and bacteria that cause diseases such as herpes, influenza, cytomegalovirus, and even HIV. It also helps in fighting harmful bacteria such as listeria monocytogenes and helicobacter pylori, and harmful protozoa such as giardia lamblia.
There is a misconception spread among many people that coconut oil is not good for heart health. This is because it contains a large quantity of saturated fats. In reality, coconut oil is beneficial for the heart. It contains about 50% lauric acid, which helps in actively preventing various heart problems like high cholesterol levels and high blood pressure. The saturated fats present in coconut oil are not harmful as you commonly find in vegetable oils. Coconut oil does not lead to increase in LDL levels, and it reduces the incidence of injury and damage to arteries and therefore helps in preventing atherosclerosis.
Fucking link

I could go on if you wish, but I'm off out for the night to get some fresh air, exercise, and to spend some time with friends. Something I suggest you may want to think about doing yourself. Although I imagine your fingers are quite strong from the amount of time that you spend copying and pasting rubbish that you don't even watch or read yourself.

Now fuck off.

Saturated fats are the way to go for cooking, I used to buy a lot of Raw Cold Pressed, I don't think there is any benefit to it now, one way to process "Virgin" Co Oil is to ferment it, it's pretty risky as the fermentation process can throw up all sorts of bacteria and fungi and, consequently toxic products thereof.
I now use refined Co Oil that doesn't use Hexane and comes in glass, cheaper and safer in my opinion.

The two best resources on Fats and Oils I have come across are Chris Masterjohn and Ray Peat.

Chris Masterjohn Blog

"This interview features Dr. Peat's views on fats. He discusses the scientific and commercial factors that have contributed to the general yet false perception that certain unsaturated fats are necessary for good health (the so called "essential" fatty acids). Dr. Peat maintains that the opposite is true. More information is available at: raypeat.com"

Unsaturated fatty acids: Nutritionally essential, or toxic?

"Fats and degeneration
========================================

50 years ago, in the first phase of marketing the polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), linoleic acid was “heart protective,” and the saturated fats raised cholesterol and caused heart disease.

In the second phase, the other “essential fatty acid,” linolenic acid, was said to be even better than linoleic acid.

In the third phase, the longer chain omega -3 (omega minus three, or n minus three) fatty acids, DHA and EPA, are said to be even better than linolenic acid.

Along the way, the highly unsaturated arachidonic acid, which we and other animals make out of the linoleic acid in foods, was coming to be identified with the “harmful animal fats.” But we just didn't hear much about how the amount of arachidonic acid in the tissues depended on the amount of linoleic acid in the diet.

U.S. marketing dominates the world economy, including of course the communication media, so we shouldn't expect to hear much about the role of PUFA in causing cancer, diabetes, obesity, aging, thrombosis, arthritis and immunodeficiency, or to hear about the benefits of the saturated fats.

The saturated fats include the “tropical fats,” because they are synthesized in very warm organisms, and are very stable at those temperatures. Their stability offers some protection against the unstable PUFA.

Several of the degenerative conditions produced by the “essential fatty acids” can be reversed by use of saturated fats, varying in length from the short chains of coconut oil to the very long chains of waxes. "

Coconut oil is an edible oil extracted from the kernel or meat of matured coconuts harvested from the coconut palm (Cocos nucifera). It has various applications in food, medicine, and industry. Because of its high saturated fat content it is slow to oxidize and, thus, resistant to rancidification, lasting up to two years without spoiling...

Many health organizations advise against the consumption of high amounts of coconut oil due to its high levels of saturated fat...Various fats contain different proportions of saturated and unsaturated fat. Examples of foods containing a high proportion of saturated fat include animal fats such as cream, cheese, butter, and ghee; suet, tallow, lard, and fatty meats; coconut oil, cottonseed oil, palm kernel oil, chocolate, and many prepared foods...Since the 1950s, it has been commonly believed that consumption of foods containing high amounts of saturated fatty acids (including meat fats, milk fat, butter, lard, coconut oil, palm oil, and palm kernel oil) is potentially less healthy than consuming fats with a lower proportion of saturated fatty acids. Sources of lower saturated fat but higher proportions of unsaturated fatty acids include olive oil, peanut oil, canola oil, avocados, safflower, corn, sunflower, soy, and cottonseed oils...

A meta-analysis published in 2003 found a significant positive relationship in both control and cohort studies between saturated fat and breast cancer...A meta-analysis of 8 observational studies published in 2001 found a statistically significant positive relationship between saturated fat and ovarian cancer...Some researchers have indicated that serum myristic acid and palmitic acid and dietary myristic and palmitic saturated fatty acids and serum palmitic combined with alpha-tocopherol supplementation are associated with increased risk of prostate cancer in a dose-dependent manner...

About 30–35% of the weight of hempseed is an edible oil that contains about 80% as essential fatty acids (EFAs); i.e., linoleic acid, omega-6 (LA, 55%), alpha-linolenic acid, omega-3 (ALA, 22%), in addition to gamma-linolenic acid, omega-6 (GLA, 1–4%) and stearidonic acid, omega-3 (SDA, 0–2%)..In common with other oils, hempseed oil provides 9 kcal/g..The proportions of linoleic acid and alpha-linolenic acid in one tablespoon per day (15 ml) of hempseed oil easily provides human daily requirements for EFAs. Unlike flaxseed oil, hempseed oil can be used continuously without developing a deficiency or other imbalance of EFAs...Hempseed oil can be frozen for longer periods of storage time... Compared with other culinary oils it is low in saturated fatty acids...

Any actual sources for that, so we can all, as intelligent adults, have a look into it ourselves?

It's absolutely no secret that coconut oil is the most saturated rich food that we know, but the trials that were involved in trying to prove that coconut oil was linked to clogging of the arteries was a series of tests using isolated fats and rabbits. Isolated being the key word here, and rabbits are herbivores.

Anyway, I digress. I'm going to post some more snippets from various websites that champion the use of coconut oil and its healing properties, and I'll finish off with an article I just read which paints a much more balanced picture and is well worth a read. It even indicates that coconut oil may not be quite what a lot of people are making out, but I always first and foremost treat big people as intelligent adults, and hope that if anyone might be interested in using coconut oil for cooking, that they do extensive research themselves.
Many health organizations have advised against the consumption of high amounts of coconut oil due to its high levels of saturated fat, including the United States Food and Drug Administration.

However, when Thomas Brenna, a professor of nutritional sciences at Cornell University took a close impartial look at those studies, he stated that, “Most of the studies involving coconut oil were done with partially hydrogenated coconut oil, which researchers used because they needed to raise the cholesterol levels of their rabbits in order to collect certain data. Virgin coconut oil, which has not been chemically treated, is a different thing altogether in terms of a health risk perspective. And maybe it isn’t so bad for you after all.”
The fact is, all saturated fats are not created equal

The operative word here is “created,” because some saturated fats occur naturally, while other fats are artificially manipulated into a saturated state through the man-made process called hydrogenation.

Hydrogenation manipulates vegetable and seed oils by adding hydrogen atoms while heating the oil, producing a rancid, thickened substance that really only benefits processed food shelf life and corporate profits — just about all experts now agree, hydrogenation offers nothing good for your health.

These manipulated saturated fats are also called trans-fats, and you should avoid them like the plague. But if one form of saturated fat is bad for you, does that mean all saturated fat is bad for you? Absolutely not!

The tropics’ best kept secret

The truth about coconut oil is obvious to anyone who has studied the health of those who live in native tropical cultures, where coconut has been a primary dietary staple for thousands of years.

Back in the 1930s, Dr. Weston Price found South Pacific Islanders whose diets were high in coconut to be healthy and trim, despite high dietary fat, and heart disease was virtually non-existent. Similarly, in 1981, researchers studying two Polynesian communities for whom coconut was the primary caloric energy source found them to have excellent cardiovascular health and fitness. Shocking eh?

Myths and Facts about Coconut Oil

Myth-1: Being composed predominantly of saturated fats, it raises cholesterol level and increases the risk of heart attack.

Fact: Common man understands only “Bad Cholesterol” by the term “Cholesterol” and most of them are unaware of the fact that there are two types of cholesterol and one of them is good for health. Further, most of them do not know that so far, contribution of saturated fats towards rise in bad cholesterol level could not be proved. This belief is the gift of some anti-coconut oil and anti-saturated fats mission powered by some edible oil producers to promote non conventional oils such as soy bean oil, rice husk oil etc. The fact is, to your dismay, that Coconut Oil raises the Good Cholesterol (High Density Lipoproteins) level which is beneficial for health. This good cholesterol helps lower the Bad Cholesterol (Low Density Lipoproteins) level and actually clears the blockages in the arteries and protects your heart.

Coconut Oil: Healthy or Harmful?

Coconut oil is hot right now. Everyone's talking about it... the Paleo community recommends it, there are books touting it as a miracle food, and even Dr. Oz is now on board. It seems as though the alternative medicine world is firmly in the pro-coconut-oil camp, and their message is spreading. The mainstream nutrition world however, including dietitians, medical doctors, and educators, believe otherwise. According to them, coconut oil is high in saturated fat, particularly lauric and myristic acids... two of the most dangerous saturated fatty acids around. Coconut oil will raise your cholesterol more than any other food, they say. Those who eat it must have a death wish.

How can both sides of this argument be so far apart? The pro-coconut-oil group says it's a miracle health food... but the anti-coconut-oil camp says it'll kill you. Welp, someone's wrong. Let's get to the bottom of it...

The Saturated Fat Thing

As mentioned above, coconut oil is high in lauric acid and myristic acid, which are considered to be two of the most heart-stopping fatty acids in existence. This evidence is largely based on short term studies using isolated fatty acids, showing that their consumption increases cholesterol levels (1, 2). As I explained in my last post on nutritionism, this is interesting and good to know, but it doesn't necessarily mean eating foods high in these fats, like coconut oil, will have the same effect. Food is more complex than we know. This is a piece to the puzzle, but not the only piece to the puzzle. What about studies involving real coconut oil?

Coconut-Eating Cultures

Let's step off of coconut oil for a moment, and focus on the whole coconut. It's slightly different, yes, but still relevant; coconut is mostly fat anyway. We've got a few sets of people out in the Eastern Pacific island area who eat a lot of coconut... unrefined coconut of course... and there's a lot we can learn from them. If the medical establishment is right, that the fats in coconut clog our arteries and kill us, then these people should be in serious trouble.

Tokelau - The first example is the island of Tokelau, which was the subject of a major epidemiological study from 1968-1982 (10, 11). The Tokelauan diet is based on coconut and fish; over half their calories come from coconut, hence 40-50% of their total calories are from saturated fat. This is absurdly high. For reference, the Dietary Guidelines recommend that number be less than 10%... because any more than that increases your risk for cardiovascular disease. So are these Tokelau coconut eaters dying left and right? No. According to the study, they have low rates of diabetes, healthy blood pressures, good cholesterol levels, and no trace of any recent heart attacks. No trace! Coconut for the win.

Kitava - The diet on the island of Kitava has been studied extensively as well (12). While the available foods are similar to those on Tokelau, the Kitavans eat them in very different proportions. The Kitavans get about 21% of their calories from fat, 17% of which is from saturated fat. Just about all of this is from coconut, and although less than on Tokelau, it's still far more saturated fat than we are recommended to eat. Overall, their diet is very high in carbohydrates, about 69%, and most of that comes from starchy tubers like sweet potatoes and taro. But are they healthy? Heart disease or stroke? No trace. Obesity? Nope. Diabetes? No sir. Senile dementia?? Not even a little. What about longevity? There were reports of one man reaching over 100 years of age. And if you didn't die in infancy or of infectious disease, it was expected that you would live well into your 70s. Quite impressive if I do say so myself. No killer coconut here.

Neither of these societies are plagued with the chronic diseases we see every day, and they eat more coconut fat than maybe anyone else in the world. Take it for what it's worth, it's just an observation... but if coconut fat were really that bad, these people would have died off long ago.
Link

I could post a lot more of this kind of thing, but it would be unfairly one sided. It does tend to make you wonder just why organisations like the FDA and the WHO are so against it, while the FDA quite literally turn a blind eye to things such as artificial sweeteners. Just saying.

The last article is definitely worth a read, and will balance out some of the claims that I've posted here from other websites. It's three pages long, so I'll save the thread from the entire article, but it's very professionally researched and offers good advice overall.

The Truth about Coconut Oil Is It Really Healthy?
But now I have come to believe that the whole world is an enigma,
a harmless enigma that is made terrible by our own mad attempt to interpret it as though it had an underlying truth.

I could post a lot more of this kind of thing, but it would be unfairly one sided. It does tend to make you wonder just why organisations like the FDA and the WHO are so against it, while the FDA quite literally turn a blind eye to things such as artificial sweeteners. Just saying.

Ray Peat documents the money interests behind PUFA>Saturated fraud very well, if you're interested in it I'd recommend digging into the links I posted above. I think it's quite probable that Eugenics plays just as large a role in the whole thing too.

While most of us can hardly afford to vacation like that fraction of the 1 percent, sometimes just knowing where they venture is enough to stoke the wanderlust. Start lusting -- our roundup of the world’s top billionaire playgrounds awaits.

Islands Apart: Where the Ultra-Rich Town Down..While commercial flights descend in droves upon mainstream Caribbean destinations like Montego Bay and Nassau, the ultra-rich touch down on private runways in far more remote locales.

And just a short private jet hop away, on the Out Islands of the Exumas in the Bahamas, is David Copperfield’s Musha Cay, with its stunning sandbar that materializes for just a few hours a day, open-air theater on the beach and 5 plantation-style guest houses -- each hugging their own private beach. The property can accommodate up to 24 guests, with rates starting from $37,500 per night for up to 12 people.

The billionaire clientele drawn to oases like these more often than not opt for all the extras, too -- perhaps a private fireworks display (offered for $25,000 at Musha Cay) or a rare vintage Champagne flown in on a whim from the mainland.

Half a world away in Fiji, the CEO of Red Bull owns another favorite private island frequented (and usually hired out in its entirety) by the billionaire set shares in coconut plantations...Laucala Island is a largely sustainable property surrounded by coconut plantations and turquoise lagoons ( shit the bed is it one of ickes destinations) where each of the 25 butler-serviced villas has a full-size swimming pool and yoga pavilion.

And on the island of Kuda Hithi in the Maldives, guests arrive by private yacht at Coco Prive and have a personal dive master among their dedicated staff. There’s a master villa and 5 offshoot villas for a maximum of 12 guests, and rates for 2 people start from $8,000 per night...

Senicide or geronticide is the abandonment to death, suicide or killing of the elderly..

Senicide as an institutionalized practice, however, seems to be much less common in ancient Rome and Greece. Parkin provides eighteen cases of senicide which the people of antiquity believed to happen.. Of these cases, only two of them occur within Greek society, one within Roman society, and the rest falling outside of these two cultures. One example that Parkin provides is of the island of Keos in the Aegean Sea. Although many different variations of the Keian story exist, the legendary practice may have begun when the Athenians besieged the island. In an attempt to preserve the food supply, the Keians voted for all people over sixty years of age to commit suicide by drinking hemlock.. The other case of Greek senicide occurred on the island of Sardinia, where human sacrifices of fathers seventy years old were made by their sons to the titan Cronus.

Senicide is currently practiced in Tamil Nadu, a state of India. The traditional practice of senicide by the family members is called Thalaikoothal. In this custom, the elderly person is given an extensive oil-bath early in the morning and subsequently made to drink glasses of tender coconut water which results in renal failure, high fever, fits, and death within a day or 2.. In 2010, after an expose in Virudhunagar district, the administration set up teams of officers to monitor the senior citizens...

King coconut is a type of coconut fruit cultivated in Sri Lanka where it is known as Thambili. It is sweeter than regular coconuts. There are several varieties of "Thambili" as "Tambili", "Ran Thambili"(රන් තැබිලි), "Gon Thambili"(ගොන් තැබිලි) etc..

King coconut water has been used from time immemorial as an ayurvedic cure. One of the most common cures is a mixture of "aralu" powder (myrobalan) added to the water of 1 king coconut.. This concoction acts as a very effective laxative...shit the bed ..

It also increases the flow of urine and can be used as a blood plasma substitute because it is sterile, pyrogen—free and does not destroy blood cells. It also contains organic compounds that have growth promoting properties. According to Dr. Atukorale ayurvedic concepts believe that "it is unctuous, sweet, increasing semen, promoting digestion and clearing the urinary path".

However, the doctor also added a word of warning stating that if tender coconut water were to be injected intravenously, it would cause hyperkalaemia (high level of serum potassium) in patients with poor kidney function because it contains a high potassium level of 290 mp%...

Therefore with this word of warning in mind it is best to remember that tender coconut water is best avoided in cases of hyperkalaemia such as renal failure, acute adrenal insufficiency and in patients with low urine output due to haemolysis following blood transfusions and also in cases of viper bite victims because the serum potassium level is very high...
