I haven't read the whole thread, so I don't know if this has been mentioned but:

In the UK we don't have the guns the Americans do. And we tend not to know how to use them. You can't just pick up an automatic weapon and expect to headshot zombies - and we all know you have to destroy the brain.

But...castles!. Castles are designed to keep out big hordes and zombies can't use ladders or build siege towers. And zombies infect you by biting you - well let's see the fuckers bite through chain mail. I'd go medieval. Appropriate a castle, block up the entrance and for the long term grow crops in the courtyard. Museum piece armour and swords to take care of business. Job done.

The Autumn series has been my favorite on the zombie genre...I didnt even mind its so UKish...even if I am a Canuck. lol It really gets deep into the isolation and different human natures of a PO zombie world.

1. Keep as many weapons as possible in as many areas that you may frequent regularly.
Mainly about your person - especially the longest sharpest lighter weight ones.

I am of course a traditionalist and do not accept new fangled zombies that run fast a-hollerin' and a-whoopin'. In my apocalypse they shuffle around going mmmmggghhhh. There are no suitable castles right near me, so I'll have to travel. But when I get there I'll be going for this kind of thing



Note a polearm has the dual function of being able to keep zombies at bay while having enough oomph to shatter their cranium. Get a phalanx together after a spot of drilling and they'd be fucked. People always assume guns. Guns need ammo and maintenance and a lot of practice to shoot them properly. An automatic rifle is near useless against a zombie once its clip is empty. A halberd never runs out of ammo.

Armour would compromise mobility, but against shufflers it should be fine. For supply runs you may wish to consider a fast and agile volunteer drawing them away while others slip out. But the occasional pitched battle outside the walls should keep numbers manageable. The beauty of the UK is you may not even need vehicles as relatively few places are particularly isolated and most castles are in tourist towns with at least a couple of supermarkets. I've thought about this stuff far more than is healthy. In fact, if the shit has to hit the fan I'd ideally like it to be zombies. At least it's exciting, not everyone just miserably starving to death and fighting each other because the oil has stopped flowing or something.

The other thing people don't consider re firearms or any kind machinery is the noise element. Time and again I have to point this out to people.

Whether traditional, slow-moving or modern souped-up zombies, all will be alerted to your soft, fleshy presence by the sound of gun-fire and explosions. Classic school-boy error, if you ask me.

Blocking up the gateway is the one real task. Supplies appropriated en route, garden tools for basic defence. I'm thinking garden fork. Danger of lodging in skull though. Perhaps also a sledgehammer, though that would swing quite slowly.

See castles also provide good defence against Mad Max style hordes of marauding raiding parties of evil survivors. They have to breach the castle while vulnerable to attack from external zombies. Assuming you block the gate sufficiently well, they'd have to scale the walls. Even if they had guns and even if they were able to figure out how to, that would render them very vulnerable. Unless they had a tank or something. In which case you're screwed wherever you are. But I think it's vital to bear in mind it's not just the zombies.

My blades are sharpened... off with the head, problem solved... that is the extent of my "zombie apocalypse survival" plan.

Any other form of apocalypse survival plan of mine consist of "my blades are sharpened, off with the head, problem solved" as well as if I have to, hike it into the mountains near by, wait for shit to stop spinning 'round, foot it down to a South American jungle.

I just watched Juan Of The Dead - it's basically Shaun Of The Dead except it's Cuban. As a low budget zombie comedy it turned out to be genuinely entertaining and does have some really funny moments. And I really like the idea of using a zombie apocalypse to set yourself up as a business killing people's zombified relatives.

So far, castles sound the best to me.

All castles have secret underground passages to wherever they need to go to. and they have their own wells for water.

I would rather be in a castle.
