I think you have to know an emotional vampire, and they you. There has to be some sort of relationship; family, co-worker, friend of a friend. You can sometimes pick up on a controlling person right away, but they usually take a while to sink into you. They just need to suck something out of you, hence the term "vampire". It's something missing in their own lives, their own being. They're unhappy, they in turn try to make you unhappy, and when they do, it's like a little "fix" for them. A lot of them tend to "advocate", not really converse, but just say things for the sake of it.

You read my mind because an emotional vampire is someone in your life not just random people.

These people always suffer from a hidden low quality of life that you might not realize.

Stay away from people like this when they have high stress or a mental breakdown.

If it was someone close to me I'd try to be there for them during the bad times as well as the good times. I insisted that an old friend came to stay with me while she was in a very poor state due to depression, because I was so worried about her. She wasn't a vampire, in fact, our friendship is stronger than ever. She would do/has done the same for me.

Yea everyone has depression that's normal.

An emotional vampire is NOT a friend with depression that is sad.

Thankfully I've never encountered an emotional vampire...I don't think my mum is one really, although she does seem to get a kick out of bringing vibes down :chuckle: She often hates people laughing :D I think she just thrives on negativity.

Your mom sounds like an unhappy person who is comfortable being that way. It's what she knows.

My sister is an emotional vampire, for lack of a better term. Always dredging up something awful I did in the past, telling me I was never a nice kid.... she just slides those right in. If I say "This guy was laying on the BS today, just the most unbelievable stuff..." she will cut in with "It's not like you never lied in your life!" Etc. That kind of thing. She's miserable, but she's my sister. I told her she was an emotional vampire about 4 years ago, and told her to look it up. She changed for a while.... then right back at it. She started back in with " I can't believe you think I'm an emotional vampire, that you think that way about me...." etc. Though she fits every profile that exists. I have to take "breaks" from talking to her, for months at a time. It drives her up the wall when an "outlet" is cut off. Her firiends do it to her as well, and she's lost some good friends because of it. I have todl her that if I'm talking to her on the phone, and she starts, I'm just hanging up. I will say "OK, that's it...." before I do, so she knows why. But yeah, it's tough to take. It's hard to not get drawn in, you have to be aware, or catch it when it starts.

I think you and ronisron are right about emotional vampires often being people in your life. It's just unfortunate when they are people you have associate with. I'm not sure that I have ever known anyone who has been focused on making me suffer, apart from my son's father maybe. I suppose that is the closest I've come to someone sucking me dry mentally and emotionally.

@ ron

Sorry to hear your sis is like that. It must be kind of horrible for her as well, especially losing friends over it, she might blame them though :chuckle:

I've been out on dates in the past, or I've beeen out and had a good time and come in happy, and my mum will have a face on her; "hiya...did you enjoy yourself?
"yeah it was good!"
"oh...that's good..."
Then when I get a bit annoyed, it's "is something wrong? Don't fuckin' start on me!"
 I'm completely used to it though. My bro is much younger than me, and he says "why does she make me feel like shit? Don't you feel horrible inside when she starts shouting? How do you block it out?"

I just say to him "as you get older you'll learn how to handle her better". And I tell him to not get sucked in and react, and to stay calm when she's out for a fight.

She does have her good points, she's not all bad :) She can be very draining though. And when you point it all out to her, she'll argue the toss and deny it all, then she'll start crying.

I believe in the term energy vampires, and to be able to avoid these type individuals is a skill.

Have you ever noticed that some people around you in your daily life just put out bad vibrations in your opinion of them, and just have some negative energy you feel emitting from them, in your opinion.
And for no real apparent reason they just seem irritating to you, just their physical presence, and if or when you speak to them it's like every opinion you have about anything they have the opposite one.

Have we actually picked up on this about them before actual communication?

Are we able to sense this without knowing it about others, and is this a physic ability?

G'day Rick.

It has been shown scientifically that our DNA gives off a low-level frequency pulse. Personally I believe that this is what many term the 'aura', or 'auric field'. As our cells have both receptors and transmitters, we both receive and transmit an 'electrical energy'. This can be known through various 'disciplines' or 'modalities', such as chi energy in the martial arts, energetic healing in reiki, laying on of hands, seichim, etc. Any individual can become 'sensitive' to such energies through various techniques.

This 'energy' is something that each of us has been indoctrinated into competing for. This is expressed well in the book The Celestine Prophecy, by James Redfield. Instead of repeating it all here on this thread, here's a link to a thread I posted previously about it ...

CONTROL DRAMAS - A Competition For Energy
www.infinite-love-forum.com/viewtopic.php?f=55&t=456

... so, yes we can pick up on the energy of another, though I wouldn't state that it is prior to communication, as the energy that we give off is a part of our constant communication / interaction with the life around us. This also isn't a psychic ability as it is a physical ability inherent in each of us, though many will not be aware of how it is occurring.

Sometimes it's easy to see, sometimes not. some people are experts at their manipulation of others. It takes an ongoing pattern to realise to what extent this is happening and it's effect on your life.

I think I'm quite good at spotting it. I think if you live with a person, and you often don't feel good, or you're thinking about things they've said all the time and worrying about things they've said, then you start changing your behaviour and things you say as a result of that, walking on egg shells kind of thing, appeasement...then it's safe to say that you're living with one of these people, sociopath or borderline, control freaks, etc.

I shouldn't be so sort of cocky about it actually, my mum is one thing, a relationship is another. Different emotions involved, more subtle, etc. I've never experienced a relationship like that. Until I've experienced it myself I should keep my gob shut :emb: I hope I never do experience it.

You have just described what it was like to live at home with my dad! To people outside the family we were perfectly normal, my folks were both teachers, so repectable jobs and all that. Behind closed doors we bore the brunt of my dad's mental health issues. It wasn't much fun, I can tell you!

Living in different countries has done wonders for our relationship. Tbh I can now see that he was just very unwell at times and I am also not the most balanced of people. It's good when we can let go of our parents shortcomings, and just deal with them person to person without family shit getting in the way.

@ Lesley

My mum was beaten up as a child and was locked in a room, she was told not to speak, she should have been aborted, she'll never amount to anything, etc. So I can understand where a lot of her issues come from.
She's very insecure and tests us a lot, pushes us to see how far we'll go.
She only has one friend. Everyone else she views with contempt :chuckle:

I do love my mum, but she makes it so dificult, she's very hard to love. She was never one for really hugging us. I haven't hugged my mum for donkey's years.

My sister seems to be aware of what "she can be like sometimes..." but it doesn't stop her. It just sort of makes her be nice for a while, then she's back to normal. She's been seeing a counsellor for about a year. It's hard for her to find or see fault in her actions. Other people's faults? She's got a laundry list :chuckle: It doesn't bother me too much, it's her cross, I know how I deal with her.

By your description, your mum does seem to have some needy/vampiric tendencies too. Her own upbringing and family dynamic probably has a lot to do with it.

Sorry.... I didn't read this before I made my above post. Seems her upbringing had a LOT do with how she is. That's awful. It's no wonder she's fighting to retain something she sees as control in her world.

But you understand why she is the way she is. And you can forgive her because of it. She's unhappy, and doesn't really appreciate harmony, or joy for what it is. Lay it all out to her one time, in a calm way, and tell her you love her. You'll blow her mind.

I've said some really shitty things to my own kids.... but I always apologize and take the fault on me, because I was frustrated, or a little angry. Even if your mom isn't quite as forthcoming, she would be if she knew how to be.

This thread has reconfirmed my thoughts that the real secret to life is staying away from negative people. :iitm:

I realize now that life is not about fighting tptb and more about keeping negative people out your zone.

Anyone who does not realize this by age 18 will suffer more than the ones that do.

Parents teach your kids how to really enjoy this life.

Like cantata... I pick up a lot of pity and guilt from people. I severely dislike the energies they give off, even if not always pity and guilt radiating from them. I've also noticed with these people after I get talking to them, a lot of "I've got to bring other people down to my level" and "I refuse to look at the bigger picture" or "you're wrong, just plain wrong, even if you're not wrong, you're wrong" coming from them.

There have been a few people that just give me the chills with the vibrations they have... just something off, not right, bad that seems to come off them. I try to avoid them too.

Walking through a shopping center is potentially disastrous... the mix of stuff coming off people from top of the food chain/bow down to me to sadness and depression is exhausting and tends to make me irritable (I try not to go shopping more than once a week if that).

This all reminds me of a label my friend's mother gave to negative types: Ditch people. They are down in a ditch, feeling miserable, and they want to drag you into that ditch with them.

First world problem? :conf:

Um... we have those big stores around here (about 20-30 miles north) where we go shopping because we can't find a farmers market. Walk in and there is an abundance of people... some feel sorry for themselves through the energy they give off, others seem depressed about something, others are sad for some reason. Then you have the ones who think they're king/queen and before they even open their mouth you can feel the energy of "I want, I get" or "I am above all these people". And then you have every energy you can think of in between those two types coming off people too... mix it all together, like throwing stuff in a blender, and you have a potentially disastrous experience. By the time you walk out of the store you wanna rip your own hair out, lay down on the pavement and take a nap or just move into a cave and never set foot in a populated area again...it's a blended mix of vibrations and energies that radiate off people all thrown together.
I hope that makes sense, not the best at explaining myself
