This is a question that may have some reflecting back,and I would guess there may be many different way's you have approached this in your life,and our wide differences in locations may show some interesting replies to this procedure.

For the most part in the past we were slaves to the want ads in newspapers for job listings,this I believe was the normal in the USA, and possibly elsewhere,and this allowed the employer to have a big upper hand in my opinion,but that's just my opinion.

But in the world of today,how would you or how do you seek a new job or a temporary one,what is the best way you feel as a individual would you approach this,word of mouth about a job,a friend of yours knowing a place that needs help,the Internet,listings in newspapers,etc.............

The last time I was job hunting (here in Blighty) I was appalled to discover that pretty much all jobs are now advertised through agencies - previously, and I'm not talking about long ago, I'd refuse to go via a recruitment agency because they're notoruiusly inefficient and half-arsed, but now, it appears, you've little choice in the matter.

Whether recent changes in employment law, whereby temporary workers (who've traditionally been placed via agencies) have to be given the same benefits as permanent employees, in terms of pay rates, holiday entitlements and other perks, will trigger a change remains to be seen. Some big employers (like Weetabix for eg) have been employing temps on much lower wages than permanent staff, and left the recruitment process to agencies - the people filling these rolls have been very easily dispensible. I don't know if being forced to treat employees differently will change their attitude towards the selection process.

Gilly, employment agencies have found a way round most of the legislation, but I forget how. When I remember I shall let you know!

It is all done my email and the internet these days Rick, certainly in the UK from my experience. There are still ads in papers, but who actually buys papers any more?

Agencies...excuse me while I vomit. They pretty much still dominate your average job-seeker too. Tricksy bastards.

I have noticed over the years what a huge influence government legislation seems to have on the unemployed and employers, for that matter. In recent years, I've been quite dumbfounded at what is going on in this country, but what to do about it? All I can really say is that I used to have no trouble walking from one job to another. This is not the case any more, unfortunately.

And woe betide you if you've never had enough cash to travel abroad and hence don't have a valid passport.

I go down to the restaurant or market and ask the owner for a job. I've held very few jobs, one as a waitress, one working in the deli and food part of a small market where I have known the owner for 18 years, and one working for my brother cleaning businesses (brother was manager)...all of which I asked for a job directly. I haven't asked for one for like 4-5 years now though, or longer... but I would still do it the same way if I severely medicated myself enough to deal with the public.

I can't contemplate applying for a job at this moment in my life, fortunately I have a little sideline
from home that provides me with an income. I'd like to go out and work, but where ?
and doing what? (sick of computer programming).

I fucking hate looking for work.

I got an email from one who still spams me from over a decade ago. IT Manager needed for firm in Edinburgh, must know Java/Tomcat/Linux/Windows/VMWare/Citrix and have MCSE...£10 an hour for a 3 month contract... ROFLMFAO!!!!

My biggest issue with finding work is resumes. Everyone wants you to fax a resume. And just the other day, there was an article on Yahoo talking about how certain words or phrases will get your resume in the trash pile, how to properly write a resume, ect. I'm not looking for a job writing resumes- why do they have to nit pick over how you put your work experience on a piece of paper? It's just such a bullshit system.
