The Name of the Rose
by Umberto Eco, William Weaver (Translator)

The year is 1327. Franciscans in a wealthy Italian abbey are suspected of heresy, and Brother William of Baskerville arrives to investigate. When his delicate mission is suddenly overshadowed by seven bizarre deaths, Brother William turns detective. His tools are the logic of Aristotle, the theology of Aquinas, the empirical insights of Roger Bacon--all sharpened to a glistening edge by wry humor and a ferocious curiosity. He collects evidence, deciphers secret symbols and coded manuscripts, and digs into the eerie labyrinth of the abbey, where "the most interesting things happen at night."

I'd normally devour something like this in a couple of days, but I can only manage a page or 2 at a time just now, as my eyes feel strained & sore. Enjoying it though - very well written.

There's already a thread around here somewhere for "What are you reading"..

G'day Black Cloud.

Good book.

From off the top of my head, Lightening, Cold Fire and Dark River of the Heart, are also good reads by Dean Koontz.

I have quite a few "improving" books in my "to read" pile that I feel I ought to be reading - What Paul Said, by Gary Willis (about the biblical St. Paul), and The People's Civil War (about the English Civil War) to name but two - but I usually just end up reading Regency romance novels instead... :D :emb:

romance novels, sheesh

I just got Philip K Dick, Total Recall, What is Real?

PKD's final short works. I love his books, he delves into the realms of possibility & was so far ahead of his time. This is a new hash of shorts.

Some movies were based on his books; Blade Runner, Minority Report, Paycheck, Next, The Adjustment Bureau, etc. Also there's a couple of crackers coming through soon, Flow My Tears The Policeman Said and Ridley Scott is planning The Man In The High Castle, Woo Hoo!

Recently read a few Ben Elton's - Stark was excellent / about "a secret consortium with more money than god and the social conscience of a dog on a croquet lawn. What's more, it knows the Earth is dying"

Enjoy whatever

I know, I'm so ashamed... :P :D

I just can't seem to concentrate on anything "heavier" at the moment - it's probably due to the CFS.

How's that book The Egyptian Gnostics? I've been wanting to read about the Gnostics; I've got "Not in his Image" by John Lamb Lash on my Amazon wishlist.

I've been wanting to read some PKD because I always love the movies based on his work. What would you recommend as a starter?

Did you ever see the episode of Prophets of SciFi on PKD? He really is an interesting individual! I also put this other book on my wishlist:
Pkd

"In this posthumous collection of adventurous essays, journal excerpts, autobiographical sketches, plot scenarios and interviews, science fiction writer Dick (1928-82) ruminates on parallel universes, the Jungian connective principle of synchronicity (meaningful coincidence), mind as energy field, his LSD trips, the I Ching, telepathy and "fake realities" manufactured by the mass media. Dick, who in one piece describes himself as a "pre-schizophrenic personality," plunges readers into altered states of consciousness. He claims, for example, to have retrieved buried memories of alternate realities; in another piece, he recalls having been a secret Christian in ancient Rome, awaiting Christ's return from the dead. Sutin, Dick's biographer, in his useful introductory essay, interprets Dick as a philosophical and spiritual thinker with affinities to the Gnostics of the early Christian era. Included are two completed chapters of a proposed sequel to his novel The Man in the High Castle; they conjure a Nazi-controlled post-WWII world in which Hermann Goring runs a Luftwaffe base in Florida in 1956."
