i ate some chicken nuggets today and i thought that its that gross pink slime stuff, i dont want to eat food that is stamped into shape, but i cant eat steaks everyday. its expensive to buy food like that.. so how can we feed enough people without all this factory stuff. theres not enough food, that we have to eat nasty paste? if there was we could all afford nice steaks. but back before we had food like this from factories, people would eat nasty things. like livers and boil heads for soup. im sure its nutritious but its an acquired taste. only my grandparents liked weird shit like that. but my mum and dad didn't like organ meats. chicken nuggets is better than head cheese. id rather eat rice.

I started a thread about this recently, bats. We would have all been eating steaks or anything we could forage and hunt pre agriculture, which is why we're in the mess we are now.

It really does effect everything, especially your health.

I don't subscribe to the suggestion that the old ways were the best.
Since agriculture became widespread and diverse, average life expectancy has doubled, yet we've now entered a new phase where fast, cheap, preserved, processed and chemically modified food is too readily available, (in the West anyway), and we have obesity and cancer fatalities increasing rapidly.

I suppose the answer is simple. Moderation, variety and discretion.

Do you know that for sure, though feather? About life expectancy doubling since agricultural advancement?

I know it certainly means that there can be more of us, completely reliant on someone else for our nourishment ofc, but I'm not sold on the improving health for everyone line.

The more I look into it, the more it appears that a lot of the food we in the west seem to view as staples really aren't doing anything great for our health.

Agree with you 100% re recent 'advancements' though. It's really quite worrying.

I'd need to dig around a fair bit to provide extensive stats Ab but here's an example chart from the US covering the last 150yrs. (clearly we'd need to go back further to cover the changes in agriculture). It's by no means ideal but you can see the statistical trend.

The fluctuations in that chart can be traced to periods of war and when you look at the non-white figures you have to allow for low finances restricting access to food choices.

Ofc other elements come into play as well, medical advancements and disease control being two major areas.

3 of the best super foods are very cheap. Eggs,Liver, coconuts, They may not be the best from supermarkets but I would sooner eat liver then the pink slime stuff. Well I dont think they put that pink slime crap into liver.

If you want to eat liver everyday eat more chicken liver for the lower vitamin A count.

Fishing is very good for real fresh fish just make sure you dont get caught poaching.

If you go to a good buchers and ask if they have any bones for your dog they generally give you a bag full ,which is great for making home made bone broth.

i dont like river fish or livers!! ill eat coconuts though.

I'd love to have a small-holding, and raise my own food. I'd give the creatures a really happy life. I want a decent fruit, veg & herb patch too.

But, I had to give up my allotment when I went back to work full-time, because there just aren't enough hours in the day. It upsets me to think of whoever took over my plot, eating the beautiful strawberries, blackcurrants, rhubarb & gooseberries that I left behind.

I wouldn't mind not being self-sufficient, but just having a few critters around.

For some reason that I don't understand, my husband is dead against it though. He doesn't like animals much. I may yet trade him in for a few chickens & a couple of Ethiopian dwarf goats.

I've a few fruit trees, and some herbs, but the garden's not that big. I could plant it up, but again, th'usband doesn't want me to. To be fair though, if I did, my son & his mates would have nowhere to kick a football around.

My dogs like to crap on my herbs, and roll about in them, so we've stopped eating them. Toby, our jack/yorkie cross, always smells of resemary. I plan to plant up the boarders with flowers next year, and will have some pots of herbs and maybe a few veggies in raised troughs where they can't defile them.

*Edit* - A chicken isn't too expensive, and you can make your own delicious nuggets minus the beaks, cereal, water and shit of shop bought ones - you'd get loads from a small chicken & could freeze some to eat another time. Would you like a recipe?

yeah my dog shits everywhere too and tramples things. i wish she smelled of rosemary instead of doritos. some vegetables and things have nice flowers and look pretty. like eggplants and squash and stuff you could put those instead of flowers and put companion flowers in too, in your front yard maybe. i saw a video of some guys whose whole garden was edible front and back. maybe i saw it on here.

I'm looking forward to sorting it out next year, and will probably start a thread asking for tips on such things as you mention. I need to be creative, and try to accommodate the kids & dogs who'll be trying to destroy things. So I'll pick everyone's brains here as to how to best achieve that.

Yes, they're like fried chicken - quick & easy to make, and a chicken goes a long way. You could get enough our of a breast fillet to give you a big plate full, so it's economical.

And don't forget to boil the carcass, to make a really tasty and nourishing soup...
