Fiscal cliff: US House of Representatives passes deal

The US House of Representatives has passed a Senate-backed deal to stave off a "fiscal cliff" of drastic taxation and spending measures.

The deal, passed in the House late on Tuesday by 257 votes to 167, now needs to be signed by the president.

There had been intense pressure for the vote to be passed before financial markets reopened on Wednesday.

Some House Republicans had wanted to amend the bill to add more spending cuts, but dropped this idea.

The bill, which raises taxes for the wealthy, had been passed in the Senate in the early hours of Tuesday by 89 votes to eight after lengthy talks between Vice-President Joe Biden and Senate Republicans.

5 years ago i would have said there is no difference in the agenda of Democrat and Republican politicians.

As i get older I don't feel the same way so much anymore.

There is less difference than between Labour and Conservatives in the UK, but even they got pretty close over the last few decades, Obama is really a breath of fresh air, I'm not ultra cynical in regards to Obama like folk here, he's reached the top in an inherently Racist society and lot's of his decisions, though often obstructed, have been for the common good in America.
It's a shame wall St fucked him over using the bail out money to pay shareholders and bonuses instead of making business loans and "injecting liquidity", anyway, I'm sure the economic priesthood will be along shortly to cry blasphemy ;)
