I'm doing it wrong. Is the purpose of soldering to solder the join or just bind the two pieces by joining them at their surfaces?

I have a metal door number which I broke by accident and am trying to join together.

I also have an old drawer handle which I had hoped to put back together this way, rather than replace all the other handles.

Any ideas?

Are you using solder, or just trying to melt the bits you want to join? (Seems an obvious question, but I'm expecting to get my head bitten off).

Soldering to me means using a soldering iron to connect electrical wires to circuit board pins etc.
Not for sticking metal together, lol

Brazing or welding is what you're after there abs, solder will just break as easy as owt.

If its something as small and light as a door number tag then you'll prolly want to braze it with a gas kit.
TBH just buying a new door number would be a heck of a lot cheaper and quicker m8, unless you can find someone with a brazing kit.

I keep an arc welding set myself but it'll just burn holes right through a door number plate in a second or two. I use it for heavy metal jobs, fixing gates for example. Car bodywork I'd use a mig but cba to keep one at the mo.

I can picture you in this house with wall sockets dangling out, doors with sticky bubbly paint, sinks hanging off the wall, strips of wallpaper rolling down the walls, and you with a hammer bashing your tv set while its still plugged in or summat in the living room, lol
