No wonder these religious organisations are so wealthy collecting €9.2 billion off their punters via blackmail.

Swiss government in cahoots with the blackmailing churches by taking the tax out of the wages at source, thought the Swiss were meant to be more progressive and not medieval.

According to this forum they take the tax even if your not part of the catholic church and you have to claim it back if you didn't declare on the form no religion.

The Swiss could vote to get rid of it if they wanted, note its not mandatory if you do not stipulate religion, also it's not all cantons.

I'm surprised they still put up with it tbh

I remember my daughter telling me about the church tax when she'd been on a student exchange to Germany. It seems an odd state of affairs to me.

I might have got the wrong end of the stick, but she gave me the impression the tax was obligatory to people who want to worship in the churches.

Just goes to show the link between the church and state is very close in those countries.

Is it a choice when non payers will be excommunicated and ostracised by the church they are a member of.

Quote-
"Unless they pay the religious tax, Catholics will no longer be allowed receive sacraments, except before death, or work in the church and its schools or hospitals.

Without a "sign of repentance before death, a religious burial can be refused," the decree states. Opting out of the tax would also bar people from acting as godparents to Catholic children."

Provided it is by choice, however it looks like that's not the case in various places

The church tax is only paid by members of the respective church. People who are not members of a church tax-collecting denomination do not have to pay it. Members of a religious community under public law may formally declare their wish to leave the community to state (not religious) authorities. With such a declaration, the obligation to pay church taxes ends. Some communities refuse to administer marriages and burials of (former) members who had declared to leave it.

Hmm maybe it has changed since the 80's in Germany looking at space bandits link.
eg- 'The church tax is only paid by members of the respective church. People who are not members of a church tax-collecting denomination do not have to pay it.'

If its always been that way perhaps some people don't realise they can claim exemption.

And also it was paying Israel back for the Holocaust, etc that the tax payer has to fork out :coffee:

Might make them think twice about carrying out the sick and twisted things they did in the second world war.

Companies like Kodak, hugo boss,Volkswagen,Ford,Standard Oil,Chase bank,IBM,Random House publishing,Bayer,Siemens, banks, royalty and catholic church should have paid!
