Of course, yes, it goes without saying. I was glued to the semi-finals and final. Incredible standard of tennis that they play now, the Djokovic-Del Potro match was amazing as well. The boy done good, I'm sure he will win several more Grand Slams and probably more Wimbledon titles now.

It would be great if it was more of an inclusive sport which got kids from an inner city background playing but not really realistic due to lack of facilities.

This is a good organisation.

The LTA isn't too keen on encouraging oiks to play the game.

I think the most important thing is to get kids playing from a young age (the same would be true of cricket). I just happened to play short tennis when I was younger, and had a natural aptitude, so I ended up playing a lot. But there just isn't the opportunity for the average child to play the game in Britain. We didn't play tennis or cricket regularly as part of PE lessons until secondary school, which is too late to start. By that time it was totally, completely and utterly pointless for me to play against anyone in my school, apart from the one other lad in my year who played regularly out of school and was a country player. Everyone else was useless. I bet if you took someone like Wayne Rooney, he can't play tennis to save his life because he won't have had the opportunity to do so. Ironically, his kids will probably go to private school, and will get the chance.

There have been so many continuous cutbacks in PE lessons over the last decade that things like tennis are a dying pastime sadly. I've watched them be slowly eroded in this time along with other subjects such as art, music and theatre. They've all taken a real battering to the detriment of the kids.

All true. :(
The problem with tennis is the authorities running it. The LTA get 10s of millions in funding and waste the lot of it. There are countries whose associations get a fraction of what the LTA gets and yet they still manage to consistently produce good young players.

Every major town and city in this country has tennis courts sitting unused because they belong to clubs that want a joining fee and an hourly rate to hire the court. The LTA could easily pay for it all and allow free access and equipment to anyone that wants it but they decide not to. The rather brilliant Tony Hawks has even sat down with the LTA and showed them that it can be done but they don't want to know.

I once played cricket at this school:

www.college.ampleforth.org.uk/admissions/fees

Surprisingly their cricket facilities were slightly better than at the school I attended.

I'm not sure about that, but I remember talking to their cricket coach and realising that it was Don Wilson, who played test cricket and took over 1,000 first-class wickets.

We didn't quite have anyone coaching like that at our school.
