Oh WUB, you're such a pesky pessimist! If you ever see Russel eating a bag of chips, be sure to have a piss on them before he's finished!

Unfortunately, I agree.
The little hope we have is that practically everybody (apart from the elitists who want this) wake up to what's happening (esp. including military /police order takers) and refuse to participate any more for their own good. We know that's not going to happen though, because they've simply been conditioned to obey for their own meal ticket, and the best we can hope for is that by spreading the word some people are more prepared for the inevitable I suppose.
I have to say though at university at the moment there are a considerable amount of youngsters and lecturers (even though my course is totally unrelated) who are switched on to what is going on, and that is encouraging.
We mustn't give up hope.
Some say 'pessimist', I say 'realist'! I just don't really see a scenario where the establishment realise that we're on to them, and decide to roll over and give up. They have many, many more tricks up their sleeves yet. As you say, it is going to take a massive, concerted effort from a lot of people. Coupled with that, I meet everyday people on a daily basis, and I'm afraid I don't notice any great appetite for wide reaching socio-economic change.
I also think it is criminal to write an article about not voting, without mentioning direct democracy, which we should all be pushing for. This would make some difference if it could be achieved. But you're right that we shouldn't give up hope, having said that I can't see any other likely scenario than the present social trends becoming more ingrained.
