I knitted like crazy last year!
Also I went to my local antique place and it's a definite place to get man presents...like a WWII whistle (into anything WWI and II), a Guinness jug (an Irishman who loves his Guinness obviously), a bosun's whistle (this one loves anything to do with sailing, the sea etc)....all at a fraction of the price that you would pay for 'normal xmas gifts. If you shop well, not only will you get something personal and unique and save money, you also buy an investment.
I'm going back there again this year once I have my christmas pennies together!

What are your ideas for quality, thoughtful and money saving gifts that aren't commercial?

Home made glitter globes.

One jar (painted to taste) full of distilled/boiled n cooled in our house, water.
One cheap xmas decoration figurine. (glue to the inside of the jar lid).
A spoonful of glitter.
A spoonful of glycerine/baby oil.
One tightly closed lid.
One firm wrist action.

Actually I used to make lots of home-made pickles for everyone. And on xmas morning I would go down the allotment, and get fresh sprouts for all the neighbours.
