it just occurred to me....here comes your 'conspiracy' theory.....all these great bands of the past, and current ones, all had statements to make, they changed peoples view of the world, in a saneway.
Could it be with all these 'talent' shows not allowing bands, that it's some sort of control of the masses?

On a slightly similar note I have wondered if there is a limit to music, ie. there are only so many combinations of chords and drum banging available until we exhaust the appealing ones. The only decent stuff that seems to come out now is when somebody 'fuses' 2 or more established genres of music to create a familiar but not entirely original sound. I'd argue grunge was the last new genre but it could be argued that was a perfect fusion of punk and metal.

I remember listening to Paul McCartney a few years back on Radio4 where he was saying that by 2010, some computer had worked out that every chord combination, run etc will have been done in music, so after 2010 (or there abouts) everything 'new' we hear musically will actually remind/sound like something we have heard before. I guess some mathematical equation bears this out.

When I used to teach kids basic guitar 'n keys I used to tell them it doesn't matter if you're Mozart or Metallica, you got 12 notes and you'll never run out.
Music is too nuanced to be limited.
How many songs can we play using the same chord progression yet one will be folk, another rock, another reggae, bluegrass, pop, soul, etc, etc, etc.

Then we can throw in natural and synthesized or sampled sounds, effects units, amp modellers. speaker modellers, reverbs .............
We're ok musically for a while folks.

Chord combinations may get repeated... and the popular ones have been doing for a long time but there are multiple ways in which to vary the chord content & music.... melody, tempo, rhythm, harmonics, timbre, different instruments.... the amount of combinations possible will go way past our lives!

Jack and Meg White were devotees of the De Stijl art movement, which is to reduce forms to their fundamental elements, an extreme minimalism if you like. Piet Mondrian is a classic example of that approach.

The White Stripes were just that. An art expression stripped down to the basics, yet still full of nuance and "The Style"

Musicology pundits have been predicting the "End of Music" since before I started studying it.
