I had to abort my last post part way through to deal with something.

I'd been going to add - along the same lines as Oi - memories erased, I would still be the same personality to a large extent, in that the same things would amuse / irritate / inspire / scare me. It has no bearing that I can see on submission of will.

But aren't our memories, perceived personality aspects of what construct our sense of self?

Interesting stuff btw.

Exactly, and our memories are purely from our sensual inputs acquired throughout the time that we can conceive.

And we are still the "self" if all of those are wiped.

Is a baby, without any memories any less of a "self"

Does it only become a "self" once named?

Of course not, it is a perfect self without all of that.

So are we.

Depends on the level of amnesia.

But for the sake of this debate, imagine you were completely wiped of personality.

So that Gilly, as an entity, was no more.

You would still exist, right?

But existing isn't the same as having a sense of self. You/we/I would still suffer the human condition and would have a sense of being human but no sense of distinct individuality.

Yes, I would still be me, myself and I. And me, myself, I would still be fairly important to me, myself, I. What about it?

And their in lies one of the fundamental causes of our problems.

A sense of individuality.

Nothing can be separate, we are all fundamentally linked to absolutely everything.

The feeling of separateness from everything else causes deep angst in us, it makes us feel alienated from everything and makes us question the point of our very existence.

And that void is filled by the "mind" to the point where it becomes the most important thing, to the point where people think that there is no point without it.

Gilly as a "mind" entity wouldn't exist.

Scary isn't it?

You've not even proved to my satisfaction that amnesia would cause the person as an entity to no longer exist, let alone that it's scary, or that it has any bearing on submission.

I am not sure I could prove that to you.

But I assume you have heard of Amnesia?

Have you ever been around somebody with dementia, when they just " aren't there" anymore?

If not, can you not imagine a state where "gilly" the mind entity is completely erased?

You stated earlier that without "Gilly" you wouldn't exist.

Do you still think this?

Yes. I also think the people with dementia, while not here, are somewhere else, if you know what I mean.

It's OK what you're saying is interesting. We don't have to agree.

Which brings me back to a point I made earlier.

Where is a baby if not where they are?

It seems that you are having difficulty imagining still existing without your mind.

In reality, it is the only part of us that we can exist without, which kind of makes it the least important.

Yet it convinces us that it is the most important.

What does this have to do with submission?

Personally, I think our mind has a problem with submission, it doesn't want to relinquish control to anything else. It falsely believes that it is the most important thing in the universe, separate from all, uniquely powerful and without it, nothing would exist.

Which is obviously just plain wrong.

"Where is a baby if not where they are?" - please could you explain, as I'm not sure what you're getting at.

It seems you're suggesting that survival in some kind of vacant, vegetative state is fine, but imo, if you don't have the mind, to analyse experience, that existence seems pretty pointless to me, so I'd still argue that the self awareness is pretty important.

You said a person with dementia is somewhere else when they lose their memory, personality etc.

They are in the same state as a baby, who as not yet acquired the memories that the person with dementia has.

The point is that personality/mind is fleeting, not permanent. It is nothing more than a set of acquired memories and maybe a bit of inherited DNA information.

Do you think a child is in a vegetative state?

Do you not think that a child finds a frog just as fascinating, if not more, than an adult who knows that it is an amphibian and it is green?

Well no, I think the person with dementia is experiencing thoughts maybe as you would while you're dreaming. I never said they lose their personality. They may not be able to comprehend what's going on around them or communicate in the same manner, but that doesn't mean the individual essence of them no longer exists. (Dunno if that's technically true btw, or just an assumption on my part).

That's entirely different to a baby's situation, surely? Babies are drinking in the external stimuli and analysing & learning from it constantly while awake.

I don' think so. You're more than memories & DNA. People have personality traits - sense of humour; aversions; levels of ability; things they enjoy.

My point is that a babies mind is very limited, it is limited directly by the amount of sensual input it gets, the more sensual input it gets, the more "mind" it will have. Pretty much the same as a person with dementia to be honest, just opposite ends of the scale, one is gaining, one is losing.

Again, you seem to be saying that without mind, life is pointless.

Inversely this means that the mind is the sole point.

This is the point I am debating.

I think the mind is deluded, the ego has gained too much strength.

It isn't important at all, without it the soul and the body lives.

Without either the soul or the body, the mind cannot exist.

A baby's mind is the exact opposite of the vacant, vegetative state. I've already said that.

I'm not convinced that someone with dementia could necessarily be described as being in a vacant, vegetative state either. While they're not interacting in their physical world, do we know what they're experiencing in their minds?

And yes, in my point of view, physical existence without the mind to think and recognise emotions etc etc is pointless. I'm also not accepting that without the body the mind can't exist. So, that's where our perceptions differ.

To be fair, it was you that mentioned vegetative states to begin with, I am just going with your thought train.

So, we are back to life being pointless without a mind then.

Which brings me back to a point a made earlier about the purpose of life being the soul, our soul purpose if you like.

What if somebodies existence/purpose on this plane is to be in a vegetitave state, so the soul can learn that experience.

It then gives that persons life a purpose, right?

Your last point, consciousness can indeed exist without the body, it has to.

Consciousness isn't the mind.

The mind ends for sure when you die, the entity "Gilly" will die.
