Pro-Russian militants in east Ukraine were acting in open defiance of an ultimatum to lay down their arms today as they seized yet more official buildings.
Dozens of men hurled rocks through the windows of a police station in Horlivka, a city not far from border with Russia, while hundreds of onlookers cheered them on.
Thick white smoke rose from the entrance to the building, from which the insurgents hoisted the Russian flag, and where a British photojournalist was apparently assaulted as he tried to document the incident.
Frederick Paxton, whose work has most recently appeared in Vice News, was photographed as he was tackled by two masked men who seized his camera during the assault on Horlivka's police station.

Pro-Russian separatists on Monday ignored an ultimatum to leave occupied government buildings in eastern Ukraine while another group of rebels attacked a police headquarters as a threatened military offensive by government forces failed to materialize.
Rebels in the town of Slaviansk, which was expected on Monday to be the focus of a broad government "anti-terrorist" operation involving the army, issued a bold call for Russian President Vladimir Putin to help them.

MOSCOW, April 14 (RIA Novosti) – The United States has not yet given a sufficient response to reports of a recent visit by CIA Director John Brennan to Ukraine, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Monday.
“We would like, in particular, to understand the meaning of these reports about CIA Director Brennan’s recent visit to Kiev,” Lavrov told journalists at a press conference.
“So far we haven’t received any intelligible explanations,” he said.
Media reports emerged Sunday that the CIA director made a secret trip to Ukraine's capital Kiev under an assumed name, met with senior law enforcement officials and personally proposed a special operation against protesters supporting federalization in the town of Slaviansk.

Ukrainian ousted president Viktor Yanukovych says the US is provoking war and bloodshed in the country by preventing anti-government protesters from using weapons against government’s forceful crackdown.
Speaking on a Russian television station late on Sunday, the ousted president said the United States authorized the new government in Kiev to use force to crack down on protesters in the country’s east.
Yanukovych also warned that Ukraine’s interim officials have taken the country to the brink of a civil war.
He noted that CIA Director John Brennan met with Kiev’s new leaders in person and "in fact sanctioned the use of weapons and provoked bloodshed," in Ukraine.
Yanukovych added that in the event of any bloodshed, the new interim officials of Ukraine as well as the US administration will be held responsible.
He also urged the country’s security forces not to obey orders and restrain from shooting at people.
