U.S. Ambassador to Libya John Christopher Stevens and three other American diplomats were killed Tuesday in an assault on the American consulate in the eastern city of Benghazi, the White House said Wednesday.

Wire services and reporters on the ground said that Stevens and the others were fleeing the consulate when a rocket-propelled grenade struck their vehicle. Al-Jazeera’s correspondent in Benghazi said the bodies of the dead had been taken to the Benghazi airport.

The images, posted on Arabic news channel AKNN News’ Facebook page, shows a man identified as the ambassador severely wounded with blood on his face. It appears he’s being carried away by two men in the midst of a crowd.

Klein told the Associated Press that he anticipated the release of his anti-Islam hate film would lead to violence. “We went into this knowing this was probably going to happen,” he said.

Klein believes that America is already at war with Islam.

“We are a country at war and the enemy is among us,” he wrote on his Facebook page in 2011. “I don’t care what Janet Napolitano says, it’s a fight to the death and we should be prepared as possible. Klein has been waging his own holy war since 1977, when he founded Courageous Christians United, a group that conducts “respectful confrontations” outside of abortion clinics, Mormon temples and mosques.
