A man whose bid to become a police officer was rejected after he scored too high on an intelligence test has lost an appeal in his federal lawsuit against the city.

The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New York upheld a lower court’s decision that the city did not discriminate against Robert Jordan because the same standards were applied to everyone who took the test.

“This kind of puts an official face on discrimination in America against people of a certain class,” Jordan said today from his Waterford home. “I maintain you have no more control over your basic intelligence than your eye color or your gender or anything else.”

He said he does not plan to take any further legal action.

Jordan, a 49-year-old college graduate, took the exam in 1996 and scored 33 points, the equivalent of an IQ of 125. But New London police interviewed only candidates who scored 20 to 27, on the theory that those who scored too high could get bored with police work and leave soon after undergoing costly training.

Most Cops Just Above Normal The average score nationally for police officers is 21 to 22, the equivalent of an IQ of 104, or just a little above average.

Jordan alleged his rejection from the police force was discrimination. He sued the city, saying his civil rights were violated because he was denied equal protection under the law.

But the U.S. District Court found that New London had “shown a rational basis for the policy.” In a ruling dated Aug. 23, the 2nd Circuit agreed. The court said the policy might be unwise but was a rational way to reduce job turnover.

Jordan has worked as a prison guard since he took the test.

So all NY cops are going to be under around 110 IQ....thats assuming the older ones retire and they retain the same recruitment setup.

I remember Michael Moore covering this years ago on the awful truth. It is rather nuts but makes sense because they don't want cops to refuse certain orders which they figure is less likely in lower iq's.

I haven't been a police officer, but based on every job I've ever done, the following is quite accurate to be fair!
But New London police interviewed only candidates who scored 20 to 27, on the theory that those who scored too high could get bored with police work and leave soon after undergoing costly training.
I can't recall ever having any feeling while at work other than "when can I go home?"!

Obviously the real reason will be that they want people who, to paraphrase George Carlin, are just smart enough to follow orders, and just dumb enough not to question why they're doing it.
The true measure of a man is not his intelligence or how high he rises in this freak establishment. The true measure of a man is this: how quickly he can respond to the needs of others and how much of himself he can give - Philip K. Dick.

G'day Andyh.

I spent two years in the NSW police force. When I went through the police academy, we were told that over 2,000 police had passed out of the academy and become full time police the year prior. The actually increase of police on the street was 6.

The turn over is very high. This doesn't make sense for the reasoning given though. There were a lot of people that left the job at the station that I was at that definitely wouldn't have been considered 'too smart'. Personally, I don't go for the whole IQ thing, even though I apparently have an IQ of 148. It's BS as far as I am concerned.

Anyway, the whole thing reminded me of a quote from the Dune series ...

Police always observe that criminals prosper. It takes a pretty dull policeman to miss the fact that the position of authority is the most prosperous criminal position available.

Ok, ummm, my IQ is 138 or border high, so I have a greater IQ than a college graduate.....who wants to be a cop?

I'm going to say something that well be viewed as strange and/or offensive/disrespectful:

My dad was a National Guard MP, city cop and then county deputy. Truth be told, the man is not the sharpest tool in the shed - but only I can say that.

These days, even he views the majority, in gross generality, of policeman's policy as dubious and money-centric. This coming from a guy who used a tire bumper as billy club. (A crude billy-stick or night-club with a metal piece wrapped around the end.)

I'm not saying he was right or wrong. He still acts copish/solderish the way he still stands about observing me and Mom washing dishes, laundering, cutting vegetables, vacuuming, etc. Reminds me of a small child fascinated, except as a grown man it's annoying.

And no, he's not being weird, thank you. He's just been, (how do you say?), institutionalized from a young age.

The only way the guy could make a living and provide was to do civil service work.

He's always been a high strung, reactionary sort, by the way; his alcoholic father used to beat him and his mother until Dad beat the crap outta his father at 16 years of age...could have much to do with his need to always be in control and his disdain for bums (in the American sense of bum).

So what about promoting these officers through the ranks? If they're deliberately recruiting those with the IQ of a jar of meat paste, what about the upper echelons, who are (presumably) required to be somewhat brighter?

There are online tests you can do, like this one...

www.iqtest.org.uk/

I don't think cops actually take an IQ test, as such, but they have some method of converting their test score to give an IQ equivalent.

They're not brilliant, best is to take a few and get an average.

Its not really a test of true smarts imho, anyone who is fairly well educated is bound to score highly.
Put the same paper in front of someone who doesn't understand the language and he'll score zero.
Even if he understands the language he still has to know some concepts that are taught, almost all of it is.

Its very difficult to design a test for true intelligence, I doubt its even possible tbh.

There's also age to take in to consideration, its possible to give the same answers to the same test at say 18 years old as at 40 years old yet the 40 yr old will score lower despite giving the same answers at perhaps the same speed.

Did the same person at 40 yrs old get 'dumber'? :)

There's so many flaws that are so easy to point out its laughable.

Good question, Gilly. Dad quit law enforcement in the mid-70's when things were changing. Crooks were suing and winning by then, Affirmative action, etc.

He rolled around for a very short bit, saw the 70's had nothing to offer in the way of pay, and since Vietnam was pretty well closed, and he got tired of living in a car (he dropped me off at his mother's place), he decided to join the army.

Sure, sure there were alternatives, but most people who cannot operate in regular society opt for government jobs.

As far as people being promoted through the ranks: Dad only met adversity as he couldn't pass the academic tests back in the day. Perhaps things have changed since then. He studied, but was frustrated and called the whole thing bull-****. A student, he never was.
