Children who get severely sunburnt should be referred to social services, according to campaigners.

They insist parents are guilty of "neglect" if they allow kids to get so badly burned they need to be taken to hospital.

Last week a four-week-old was referred to hospital with sunburn.

The skin cancer and burns charities say that in cases where health staff have concerns they should report children's injuries to social workers.

I agree really that if little uns - like 4 week olds - are sufficiently burned to need hospital treatment, it may reflect parents' negligence. It's common sense to take precautions, like covering them up & providing shade.

But there are instances where sun burn comes as an unpleasant surprise, like when spending time next to the sea, where the cool ocean breeze tricks you into thinking you're not overdoing it.

I'd need to see the severity of injury to these children who've been taken to hospital and know the circumstances to be able to judge. I can't help thinking that if the parents took them there instead of just slathering them in after sun cream, maybe it's just over-anxious parenting, rather than negligence.

But I hate the stance adopted by a lot of junior schools now, whereby kids aren't allowed to play out in the sunshine unless they've got sun cream on. There's plenty of reason to distrust sun screen, including the suspicion that it may cause skin cancer.

My sister had a mate at college who was obsessively frightened of skin cancer, and as a result, used lots of sun screen. He got skin cancer.

So all sunburnt kids will now be treated via Google as parents daren't seek professional help for it!

You're interrogated when you take kids to hospital for anything in case you've hurt them deliberately or been criminally negligent.

It isn’t surprising at all. As you know, the evidence is there for all to see, and once you take the economic factors into consideration, and the fact that barely any family can afford to raise their own children without state supervision very early in their child(ren)’s life, then it’s not hard to understand why birth rates are declining so dramatically.

I was talking to a very intelligent woman the other day, and she pointed out that if a woman wants to work as a childminder, and look after other people’s children in a creche, we value this very highly as a society because it’s paid work, but if a woman wants to stay at home and look after her own children, we don’t value this at all! In fact, it’s almost becoming a logistical impossibility; certainly it is the preserve of privileged people. Of course, as Bill Hicks pointed out about ‘taxed drugs’ being good drugs, one can be taxed, and one can’t.

It’s quite incredible to me as I get older and understand the society we live in more and more the extent to which it’s socially engineered. You are literally being trained, indoctrinated and institutionalised into a completely unnatural way of thinking from such a young age now. There’s no wonder most people don’t break out of it, and don’t learn to see through it, especially when all of their peers, friends, family and authority figures that they come into contact with have all been inculcated into it too, and thus all completely believe in it and often promote it. The public have been so brainwashed now that a significant percentage would not be appalled and dismayed if a child was removed from a household for getting sunburned.

Virtually the only healthy people in this society are the Amish, so naturally everyone takes the piss out of them!

I stayed at home with mine and wouldn't have had it any other way. Obviously, less money came in and we have done without things other people had but it's been worth it and more rewarding in my opinion. There have been many people over the years who've said things negative in regards to me being an 'old fashioned' mother but basically they've been told to run on. I'm glad I've done it this way... still am in fact.

But it's amazing how quickly thing change, 'Sketts because my mum brought me up, and didn't work until I was at least at school, I don't think she worked as far as I recall until I was about 8 or 9 years old. I'm honestly not that old, but yet this is already almost unthinkable for a working-class family now, as reflected in the attitudes you've encountered, unless it's a single mother on benefit (not that I'm judging people, it's just a fact).

I still say it depends on the severity of the burns and the circumstances. It's something that could be life-threatening to babies (like the 4 week old quoted in the OP) so I'm not thinking that it should result in those children being taken away from their families, but when it's dramatic, those parents need some sort of coaching on safety issues imo.

Remember, everybody isn't like you & me. The number of mums I see round here who push their babes in buggies & gaggles of toddlers out into busy roads causing drivers to have to do emergency stops never ceases to amaze me.

Yes, it has indeed been a quick transition when you think about it and a very damaging one on the whole. All part of the process though innit - strike at the core of the family foundations and the domino effect radiates throughout the rest of society.

You break the family , you break society basically.
As they have with this idea that a man alone can provide for a family or that you can get a job after uni or you can have a holiday abroad every year etc etc etc.
All of this simple stuff is now a pipedream.

I'm not sure if that was some kind of jibe, Lightgiver.

The point I was making is that there are droves of people around who appear to be very flippant about their kids' safety. Pushing them into the road to make traffic stop for them to cross; leaving them crying in their prams on the pavement while they go into shops - I see stuff like that every day of the week.

Who's stupid enough to let their 4 week old cook till he/she needs hospital treatment!?! Babies are much more vulnerable to sun than others, and it can be life threatening to them - applying vinegar wouldn't be much help against blisters, dehydration & heat stroke.

The State's interference is detestable, and there's little to give anyone a modicum of confidence in the Social Services, but yet, there are plenty of scummy people around who create the opportunity for them to justify their interference. It makes me sick!

Really? Nature take its course as in letting kids suffer unnecessarily? Including idiots wiping out their own off-spring?

I think we're maybe looking at it differently - I agree they should fuck off & mind their own business where it's just kids getting a bit of sunburn (I can't think of many kids I've known that that's not happened to) but it's very different, to my mind, where babies lives are endangered through casual lack of care and utter stupidity.

I'd rather see some form of education campaign going on than the threat of those sinister bastards getting involved. But there needs to be something. I can't agree that vulnerable kids should be completely left at the mercy of imbeciles.

Have to say that i agree with gilly that the amount of folk who show no regard for their kids safety nor the safety of others is shocking.
My work means I see families in their hundreds every day. I am constantly bewildered by people not even taking basic care, leaving their kids to run unfettered by inconveniences like safety, responsibility, decency and manners.

:(

Is social services the solution? Considering it is an arm of the very state that herds folk into that kind of mindset.....categorically not.
