Self-sufficiency is the state of not requiring any aid, support, or interaction, for survival; it is therefore a type of personal or collective autonomy. The term self-sufficiency is usually applied to varieties of sustainable living in which nothing is consumed outside of what is produced by the self-sufficient individuals. Examples of attempts at self-sufficiency include simple living, homesteading, off-the-grid, survivalism, DIY ethic and the back-to-the-land movement. Practices that enable or aid self-sufficiency include autonomous building, permaculture, sustainable agriculture, and renewable energy. The term is also applied to limited forms of self-sufficiency, for example growing one's own food or becoming economically independent of state subsidies. Good advice, probably some of it isn't relevant for the UK.

Seems he has plan A and thats it...die on his land with his kids. I would like to of hear him say as time progresses the situation will be assessed and other plans may well be made.

You've not much chance with a wife and kids in tow.
Depends on the area I suppose but I wouldn't say most folk are cut out for tabbing across the countryside for hundreds of miles and living off the land. You may aswell get a decent spot in the 1st place thats well kitted out like he says and defend it to the hilt.
A bloke on his own...well thats different.

SO the thousands of refugees in every war you see walking along with the kids in tow had no chance !!!... Ive seen first hand people literally running with a kid in the arm and bag in another to get out of dodge. The point is he has no plan b.He has boxed himself in with his mental attitude to defend his piece of dirt no matter what the cost. He wont move no matter what. Now when push comes to shove and he may well be faced with overwhelming fire power, what are his options.
Fight to the death
Surrender to be killed/prisoner
Have a plan B, C an RV with weapons and food stashed and a Emergency RV if that is compromised. After all he has time to prepare so a bit more work on his behalf can make a difference.

Ive a family unit my youngest is now 10.oldest 18 Over the years Ive adapted a plan of action for movement. Even when they were young the main option was to drive or walk out.Even small children can carry light kit on there back, the secret is to go at the childs pace, if he needs a rest well either rest or carry him.Surprising what some adrenalin can do !! No need to rush once clear, the idea is to survive. I live in the country anyway but the location I want to get to is 40odd k from where I am atm. Ive walked the route, a lot of forest and plenty of water. Within 12k of the area I intend to work in are several other locations I can use. Plenty of springs, wetlands, forest and a nice Estuary. Also plenty of villages and an observation point that gives me viewing over 3 MSR and an extensive view of the built up areas across the Estuary.

Any body who thinks they will be tabbing 200 miles in the UK if the SHTF unopposed needs a reality check and to give there heads a big wobble. It ain't going to happen.

As for a single bloke operating on his own, well that's great if has skill and a lot of luck to stay injury free, not something I would contemplate tbh, he should at least have a location he can meet other people at.

What makes you think the same can't happen just because you're walking somewhere? Do you see the issue with the logic here?
Why assume that just because you're not in a house you won't be attacked?
What if his place is in the wilds of Alaska or Greenland?

Agreed, although theres far more flexibility there.

This crosses my mind often. I would like to think I could help people if they were truly in need of it, but risking the safety of my own child by helping someone else always comes back to mind. People seem to have a violant nature and be pretty big assholes, especially in a natural disaster or man made disaster... is it really survival of the fittest at that point or do you help those who may not have been ready for something to happen?
I know in one of my travels, my first go around didn't go as expected and I met some very violant assholes that I did nothing to encourage their behavoir other than being outdoors after dark on my own. And if that type of activity is to be expected, is it really worth the risk of safety to help someone else?

Sorry a little off topic, but when surviving, it is a chance that it would come into play that you may meet someone who needs help.

That's a decision only you can make at the time.
Now the location you intend to go to, how accessible is it. ? If its a relatively hard place to get to and a family unit comes into it, well they must have something about them to have got there. So in theory should have something to offer you, and you them.
A male only unit, the chances are they will want to fuck you, kill you and steal everything you have, the same with a mixed unit M/F Generally if kids are in tow, I would be cautious but a lot happier than the other options.
Also depends if they have rucksacks with supplies in or travelling light. I would always treat people as hostile at first.
You can only do so much depending on the size of your family or group, and that can dictate the tactics you employ for such meetings.

a COUPLE good books you may want to buy that will give you an insight into some ideas are SAS ultimate guide to Combat , ive 2 good friends in that one :killinme: ( nice pics boys) and Special Forces ultimate guide to survival by Robert Stirling. If you only glean one idea from the books , it may save your life when coming into contact .

Your ex military !! Where is plan B and C. There always has to be an option to vacate the position you are in, that's why you have RV and ERV yes ?? If you want to die in your little piece of dirt, then fine crack on. I would prefer the option of being to be able to relocate to another position.

No issue with any logic, did I mention not being attacked on route any where. That is always a possibility. So what if his house is in the wilds, is he welded at the hip to it ? :conf: Maybe he should be nocking up a few shelters while he has chance in the quiet. This is the problem people get attached to some piece of real estate, if you have to move to survive then move you will. Ive been there done it.Not like you lads in the Brit army who just call in some air cover or fire support ;)
I'm in a nice house at the moment , in a tranquil location, if something happens im gone quite simple really. Its a house. I remember plotting up in about 30 different houses the one year, fuck knows who owned them, they had rapidly left. Why ? If they had not left they would of been killed.
I'm telling you from my first hand experience, if you want to sit and fight it out that's your prerogative, but believe me when it comes to the time, you will want to be gone.

IF your at a location its only right as long as its safe RIGHT ?? So then plan B comes into play again. Plan B can come in many forms, depending on the force/firepower facing you in relation to your force and experience.
Every body thinks its going to be a bear grylls type situation. Where are all the weapons from the Arsenals going to end up, police army weapons if a shtf scenario? . I'm talking about the global event now now just a few riots.

At the end of the day everybody has an idea of what they want to do, and can do. Im telling you how I see it from direct experience. There are so many scenarios out there and different options but flexibility and trying to plan ahead or at least have several options in the mind would be a help. :)

Alaska... so lets say his place is in Alaska. Even better for him, plenty of space to escape to if indeed he does get a bump.Plenty of space for him to make a plan B or C . Why would he need to go to Antarctica when Alaska is 663,268 sq mi. Fuck me he could make plans and locations A-Z :O
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alaska

Alaska (i/əˈlæskə/) is the largest state in the United States by area. It is situated in the northwest extremity of the North American continent, with Canada to the east, the Arctic Ocean to the north, and the Pacific Ocean to the west and south, with Russia further west across the Bering Strait. Alaska is the 4th least populous and the least densely populated of the 50 United States. Approximately half of Alaska's 722,718[4] residents live within the Anchorage metropolitan area.

camping gear basically.
as long as you can feed yourself when the beans have run out.

am i being chased by gunships, nazis with bloodhounds, or zombies, or is it just the end of times and im just trying to survive?

Option 1 - Stay put (no travel require)
Option 2 for immediately evac - Mountains across the way (approximately 10-20 mile hike in dense forest area, another 5 after I reach back to the point I want to get to a fresh water stream...it is a good 20-30 miles away from communities/towns)
Option 3 - for non emergency - Forest down in a valley (approximately 30-40 mile hike/drive, very rough road that some may not even attempt with a 4-wheel drive truck...is a good 40-50 mils away from communities/towns)
Option 4 - for final plan after shit stops spinning, hike my family down to South America where I have friends (way over 100+ miles of hiking involved)

I would be VERY leery of any male only group, that is for sure. Not saying men can't need help, or that they are all bad, but from personal experience I wouldn't be as likely to help them. Kids I have a soft spot for though.

We're kinda using you as our own personal questions and answers guy :chuckle: Don't you feel lucky!
I knew there were people on here that had a lot of experience and thought others could learn from each other. I hiked through a lot, met some bad people, realized just how stinky I could get, and how fast a chill can really set in...I think it's a necessity for anyone even considering a plan of escape or even just taking a camping trip to do...go out with the bare essentials and learn just what it is like first hand to begin with so you are a bit more prepared in the event that you have to do something similar to survive.

Why would he want to be walking anywhere or need a plan B if he was miles from anywhere? That was the whole point in the 1st place lol :)
His vid was basically about putting yourself in the place you envision going NOW instead of if/when TSHTF so to speak :p

Fair enough, if you're in Manchester or London then don't make any plans to sit in your house and defend it :D

You can be being chased by whatever you think you may be chased by. I plan for the worst thing I can think of and hope it never gets to that point.

What country are you in ?

Thats a lot of walking so keep them feet well looked after. :O Walking in forested mountain terrain twisted ankles are a fucker. So plenty of top of the line pain killers, you may have to push through that barrier. Have you any first aid skills behind you or comfortable with weapons? Map reading skills ? Easily remedied by a few courses except for the weapons.

A 100mile walk in what I would regard as hostile terrain is going to be difficult. A 100 miles is that taking into account detours you will have to make due to " armed personnel" or infrastructure down ie bridges. What if the bridge you were hoping to cross is guarded by some hillbillies on moonshine. Big detour required to find a crossing point !! Slowly does it , if not pursued and using plenty of all around observation(good binocs).

As you all ready know what its like to go camping and be out in terrain that's a lot more than a hell of a lot of people who live in the cities. I can only give you some advice on what Ive experienced somebody else will have a different experience. Take what you need that fits your criteria.

Once within but nevermind...might have had something to do with common sense lol.
Alaska... so lets say his place is in Alaska.

He is staying no matter what, im not im leaving to go else where. He wants to fight to the death because he has a cple little kids. He clearly states that.

No plan B.....please don't tell me you never had a plan B. Thats basic miitary planning. Are you saying dont plan for the unexpected ??? :pmsl:

so ENLIGHTEN US with some experience that you have had in this field.

If I remember rightly you left oop north because of the crime and no hope. Went to paddy land where the grass is all green. Now you have a big mountain in front of you and the sea behind you. Your plan B is what ?

Plan B is to not need to have a plan B.
I've only said it 3 times now.

A plan B suggests a plan A.

The grass might be literally all green here I dunno about metaphorically though :)
I moved from 'oop north' so that I wouldn't have to stress too much over getting out of the place.
Its no use just walking off aimlessly, you would need to know where you're going and why in the 1st place.
Thats just a single plan, a plan B would suggest a second alternate location :)

Experience with weapons, yes. Guns, knives, sword...wanna learn to use a bow (crossbow and traditional). Know how to use a compass and know the map has to face a certain way (normally it has to face so you can read the words and the N points north :x ). First aid wise, I learn as I go. Furthest I have had to test it, is setting and bandaging a broken finger; and I cleaned, picked something out of, and stitched a friend up who had been laid open by a knife from the back of one side of his left-side to the front (he refused to go to a hospital, too many questions apparently --- surprisingly he lived :umm: ).

Hillbillies with moonshine...hm...I'd be asking where the fuck they were hiding when I was looking for moonshine before :O Detours are a must in plan making, more than one way in and more than one way out.

Camping, regular camping, yes. Hiking through the UK, avoiding population as much as possible with the bare essentials, yes. Getting my ass handed to me by more than one drunk and disorderly Englishmen, yes. Hiking and rock climbing in Sedona (on paths and off paths, on cliffs and off) minus the repelling gear, yes. I am not a city person :chuckle: Gratefully out in the country near a small town, I'd have more issues than I already do if I lived in a city :umm:
I came into this world kicking and screaming while covered in someone elses blood

Seeds.

Ive plenty of seed , unfortunately the wrong type :P

G'day Entrangermercenary.

Maybe they are the perfect seeds to have ... for more than one reason. :spliff:

If you only have one type of seed. then there is one that has numerous applications .. including nutritionally. ;)

HEMPSEED NUTRITION

Cannabis hempseeds contain all the essential amino acids and essential fatty acids necessary to maintain healthy human life. No other single plant source provides complete protein in such an easily digestible form, nor has the oils essential to life in as perfect a ratio for human health and vitality.

Hempseed is the highest of any plant in essential fatty acids. Hempseed oil is among the lowest in saturated fats at 8% of total oil volume. The oil pressed from hempseed contains 55% linoleic acid (LA) and 25% llinolenic acid (LNA). Only flax oil has more linolenic acid at 58%, but hempseed oil is the highest in total essential fatty acids at 80% of total oil volume.

"These essential fatty acids are responsible for our immune response. In the old country the peasants ate hemp butter. They were more resistant to disease than the nobility." The higher classes wouldn't eat hemp because the poor ate it. - R. Hamilton, ED.D., Ph.D. Medical Researcher-Bichemist U.C.L.A. Emeritus.

LA and LNA are involved in producing life energy from food and the movement of that energy throughout the body.

Essential fatty acids govern growth, vitality and state of mind. LA and LNA are involved in transferring oxygen from the air in the lungs to every cell in the body. They play a part in holding oxygen in the cell membrane where it acts as a barrier to invading viruses and bacteria, neither of which thrive in the presence of oxygen.

The bent shape of the essential fatty acids keep them from dissolving into each other. They are slippery and will not clog arteries like the sticky straight-shaped saturated fats and the trans-fatty acids in cooking oils and shortenings that are made by subjecting polyunsaturated oils like LA and LNA to high temperatures during the refining process.

LA and LNA possess a slightly negative charge and have a tendency to form very thin surface layers. This property is called surface activity, and it provides the power to carry substances like toxins to the surface of the skin, intestinal tract, kidneys and lungs where they can be removed. Their very sensitivity causes them to break down rapidly into toxic compounds when refined with high heat or improper storage exposes them to light or air.

Nature provides seeds with an outer shell that safely protects the vital oils and vitamins within from spoilage.

It's a perfect as well as perfectly edible container. Hempseed can be ground into a paste similar to peanut butter only more delicate in flavor. Udo Erasmus, Ph.D. nutritionist says: "Hemp butter puts our peanut butter to shame for nutritiounal value." The ground seeds can be baked into breads, cakes and casseroles. Hempseed makes a hearty addition to granola bars.

Pioneers in the fields of biochemistry and human nutrition now believe cardiovascular disease (CVD) and most cancers are really diseases of fatty degeneration caused by the continued over-consumption of saturated fats and refined vegetable oils that turn essential fatty acids into carcinogenic killers. One out of two Americans will die from the effects of CVD. One out of four Americans will die from cancer. Researchers believe cancers erupt when immune system response is weakened. And more Americans are succumbing to immune deficiency diseases than ever before. Promising studies are now under way using the essential oils to support the immune systems of HIV virus patients.

The complete protein in hempseed gives the body all the essential amino acids required to maintain health, and provides the necessary kinds and amounts of amino acids the body needs to make human serum albumin and serum globulins like the immune enhancing gamma globulin antibodies.

The body's ability to resist and recover from illness depends upon how rapidly it can produce massive amounts of antibodies to fend off the initial attack. If the globulin protein starting material is in short supply, the army of antibodies may be too small to prevent the symptoms of sickness from setting in.

The best way to insure the body has enough amino acid material to make the globulins is to eat foods high in globulin proteins. Hempseed protein is 65% globulin edestin plus quantities of albumin (present in all seeds) so its easily digestible proteen is readily available in a form quite similar to that found in blood plasma.

Hempseed was used to treat nutritional deficiencies brought on by tuberculosis, a severe nutrition blocking disease that causes the body to waste away. (Czechoslovakia Tubercular Nutritional Study, 1955.)

The energy of life is in the whole seed. Hempseed foods taste great!

They will insure we get enough essential amino acids and essential fatty acids, to build strong bodies and immune systems, and to maintain health and vitality. Please copy. Excerpted from Hempseed Nutrition by Lynn Osburn. Produced by Access Unlimited, P.O. Box 1900, Frazier Park, CA 93225.
