Self-sufficiency is the state of not requiring any aid, support, or interaction, for survival; it is therefore a type of personal or collective autonomy. The term self-sufficiency is usually applied to varieties of sustainable living in which nothing is consumed outside of what is produced by the self-sufficient individuals. Examples of attempts at self-sufficiency include simple living, homesteading, off-the-grid, survivalism, DIY ethic and the back-to-the-land movement. Practices that enable or aid self-sufficiency include autonomous building, permaculture, sustainable agriculture, and renewable energy. The term is also applied to limited forms of self-sufficiency, for example growing one's own food or becoming economically independent of state subsidies. Still can't find any mention of anarcho-syndicalism type.

Tbf to merc, even absent hunting for meat, in the current paradigm unfortunately stuff needs to be killed. Current farming practice for example would see food prices rocket if stuff weren't killed. I therefore totally get why survivalists may be very interested in things that kill stuff. In common with yer traditional country men.

That is all within this paradigm though. Long term any community that had achieved sustainability would necessarily have gone far away from the current paradigm. Pest damage would become far less of an issue as a result. Sustainable food production requires working with nature rather than against it. Pest populations would not be kept artificially high by highly concentrated food sources such as we see today.
Once the mid to long term phase has kicked in, meat would have been similarly addressed. Shooting, from experience, is not the most efficient/clean of methods of death. However, even in today's paradigm, the vast majority of meat will walk straight into the abatoir. Shooty stuff would be less required as time went on,
Then there's security I suppose. Easy to see why preppers are convinced of the need for projectile instruments of pain, given the likes of the street gang chav. I'd be pretty surprised if they (the chavs) hadn't all killed each other in the first week though, Anyone making it to the mid/long term will probably have worked out that working together is the only way.

I am sure you are asking yourself the same question as I am: do people really need a SHTF situation to work that out? And if so, are we sure that their inability to work this about before a huge disaster, might actually prevent them from reaching the logical conclusion after the disaster?

I think many of the people calling themselves preppers (present company excluded) are the last people to be anywhere near, if a disaster were to strike.

Yes, I think people would work it out. Put it this way, those that made the long term would have ;)

As you say though, I rather wish it got worked out sooner rather than later. It aint hard. Britain was like it fairly recently. I grew up in that environment where communities worked together. I've watched it erode and erode but the thread is still there.

this is the whole point of being a survivalist/prepper to work with others, most "ordinary" people out there are too self centered and divorced from any land/self sufficiency base that they haven't a clue. there was a guy interviewed on tv in Surrey who had been without power for nearly a week, he couldn't shower, cook a meal or charge his mobile phone, he said "ITS LIKE THE MIDDLE AGES"! I laughed so much I fell off my chair!!! who do you want to be like? that guy? or do you actually wanna get off your arse and learn the skills that will be needed to survive? I think I know the answer of some here, but you might surprise me...but I doubt it!

That's a good question

I think it depends largely on the hypothetical disaster scenario:

Possible scenario elements/

1) Energy shortage/collapse
2) Break down in law and order
3) Food and water shortage
4) Lack of medicine
5) Infrastructure-transport breakdown
6) outbreak of disease
7) radiation and/or toxic leak
8) environmental threat (flooding/cold snap/heat wave/extreme atmospheric conditions)
9) invasion
10) martial law/totalitarian crack down

and so on

The first requisite in almost all of these situations- provided one survives the initial calamity is the correct state of mind

Some people are unable to adjust to sudden change and others are more prone to panic.IME

The second would be relative health and fitness. Mobility etc.

The third would be the ability to communicate

1-8 never mind 9 and 10, don't forget there will be a large" die off"!, yes I know snigger all you like, but the very youngest and the very elderly will be the first to go, closely followed by anyone with life threatening illnesses, eventually people who have run out of food and water will start dropping from starvation and malnutrition.can you imagine the stink from dead bodies and human waste building up in the streets? no I don't suppose you can! don't expect the govt to come running to your rescue, they'll be too busy covering their own arses! nor police or army, 136,000 police and less than 90,000 army cannot police 60 million people.

Fuck me it is you Tracker :killinme:

So survival is about using your brain as well, so fuck off to the relations, drink all their beer and eat all of the food. If he had no relations then social services...
This is not a survival situation ffs

Manages to get an interview...cant charge his mobile ffs :killinme: What you mean by survival is a shower with plasma and mobile phone charger ffs :coffee:

Living rough in a forest with an AK and some grenades being chased by tigers who would crucify you to a tree is somewhat a survival situation ;)
Living in an igloo for several weeks and snowholes kind of gets the juices flowing...or a jungle warfare survival course then off to the boonies for a month’s deep penetration also gets the juices flowing.

only cos MOST people are behaving themselves, now change the dynamics, no food in the shops, no petrol in the filling station and then the power cuts start, how long before the riots start? the autumn riots a few years ago showed the police aren't up to it.

that's the whole thing about prepping Knob, you get to meet up and learn which people you could work with after an event, and more importantly the ones to AVOID.
