Looks like he wanted to try out a few different OS and transfer docs etc between them.
That being the case vm's are the way to go, makes life very very easy. No need to worry about breaking boot partitions etc.

Can you confirm this spacebandid?: You have a usb caddy for a spare HDD and either have or can install Mint on it via a bootable usb stick?

I would not recommend using a usb stick or usb HDD as a method of using Linux long term. USB sticks are horrendously slow and I have personally had problems using a caddy'd HDD. After some time the HDD and hence OS just seems to lock up so I abandoned the idea.

Have you tried going in to Window's safe mode? You may be able to either have a look at your keyboard config in control panel and check for any obvious error or failing that restore the machine to an earlier point in time.

Hopefully this will fix your Windows keyboard and then if you wanted to try Mint, do so as I first described using v.box

I've tried various ways of trying to fix Windows but it just won't recognise the keyboard.... so everytime I want to use it I have to plug in a usb keyboard & mouse which is a tad tedious!
Everything I do now is just leading to another problem...... there is a partition on the internal drive which had Linux Mint 13 on it.... LM13 vanished so I re-formatted the partition to try & install LM16..... which is showing as there, but it won't boot from it & I've no idea why? :conf:
I've been into the BIOS & boot settings & it should be booting from the HD.... it doesn't even seem to recognise that there is a Windows drive there anymore either. So I'm having to boot it each time from the USB which is a pain in the arse because I have to log in to everything again once it gets going.

That's because you didn't edit the grub boot loader after the format :-)
Again virtual machines would end all that hassle

The boot loader is what loads the OS, especially crucial if you dual boot.
Explaining it would take a few hours of me being physically present explaining it and guiding you through it, I'm afraid its far too complex.
If you can install a single OS from scratch and then install whatever virtual machine software then you can progress from there.
You will ofc need a separate pc to burn the Linux or windows dvd to install the host OS first.
What spec is the machine btw?

As far as I know, I've just done what i did last time and that worked....
boot Linux from the USB then install it to a partition then boot from that partition.
If I wipe the whole HD then install Linux will that make it easier?
It's only a very old laptop 2GB RAM with an 80GB HD.... not sure how it's still working tbh!

Well after all that fucking about I've just 'borrowed' a new laptop of me ma.... :rofl:
Windows 8 ftw! Very smooth..... like it so far.
I've had a go on Virtual Box as well now & had LM16 running through it which was pretty cool..... just installing a Windows 7 into it now as well since certain software requires it..... can I run Mac OS through it as well or does that require a Hackintosh?

There's definitely a steeper learning curve with Linux, but so worth it in my opinion.

You can install macos on vmware or virtualbox by downloading an entire vm image ;)
Its not exactly legal but you should be able to find a torrent

Yep I'm in the process of doing just that by installing a load of ropey stuff on it!

Yeh that's what I'm downloading the VM image. If it works it will end so many cross compatibility issues & give me more access to software I've been unable to use........ so all in all, all good!
How does this work then? If an OS is unable to run certain software due to hardware limitations, how does running a different OS inside another OS inside the hardware make it work?

The idea is that a vm can pretend to be a different chipset etc should you need it. Vm's are just ace, the stuff they make possible now is just incredible

Linux Will Probably Force Microsoft to Offer Future Windows OSes for Free

I said this a couple of years ago, and it's potentially a reality. And I don't think they've got too much choice to be honest, not with the way the Linux desktop is evolving.
But now I have come to believe that the whole world is an enigma,
a harmless enigma that is made terrible by our own mad attempt to interpret it as though it had an underlying truth.

You'll notice win8 is aimed at touchscreens. I think what we will see is software as a service with dumb terminal devices, gaming will be streaming like onlive.co.uk but taken much further.
We'll see graphite displays running the apps rather than OS on end user devices. Microshaft will still make their profit regardless

I see what you're saying Andy. I still think it will be free within the next five years, simply to stop people from migrating to something like Linux, as they can use Windows as a platform for sales.

I really wish it would work on my PPC Mac twould make my life so much easier.
Still downloading the Mac OS but one of the comments on it says it doesn't work on an AMD chipset.... which this new laptop has.

It's still installing Windows7 in Virtualbox it's been going since 5pm!
Oh joy it's just finished & told me the computer isn't 64bit which I thought it was. Why the fuck did it tell me that at the end rather than when I selected the 64bit version of Win7?! :roll:

EDIT: so I've just removed the 64bit version from VB & even though I ticked the option not to remove the source files it's deleted the fucking download of Win7 now.... ! :mad: RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGE!
