Typing in the terminal is almost always the way I install stuff, you just need to know the exact name it's given.

Although the software manager is an excellent bet, as is the package manager, they're pretty much the same thing, just the package manager is a little more intricate.

And it's definitely worth upgrading. and like I said, mint 13 is updated until 2017, so a distribution upgrade might be worth a shot .

sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

But a full installation is always the best bet. The XFCE version is always a good bet too if your computer is not quite up to modern standards.
But now I have come to believe that the whole world is an enigma,
a harmless enigma that is made terrible by our own mad attempt to interpret it as though it had an underlying truth.

I've got one of these hard drive docking stations & a couple of spare hard drives so I've formatted one of them & I'm trying to install linux mint 16 just to have a go on it. I've got the iso file but how do I install it? Where is the install file in the folders? Why isn't there just a folder with a file called 'INSTALL' in it?
Does my fucking head in this !

Burn it to CD or make a boot USB? Don't know how.. But that's my guess.

Correct, you burn iso's to disk then boot from it :)

Again, vmware or virtualbox would make life a lot easier

Love it. Been using Ubuntu or one of its forks as my main OS since the Gutsy days.

When valve ported all the HL2 games I nearly ditched Winblows completely. Were it not for DayZ being windows only I would have done.

Yeh I've done it from USB before........ but why does it need to be done like that? It's counter-intuitive. I want it on the hard drive I've downloaded it onto so what's the point in making it so that I need to stick it on a USB to put it back on the HD?

With vmware or virtualbox then you can boot from an .iso into a windowed screen within the operating system you already use without knackering anything.
Simples and free :)

Hence why they usually come as .iso's you see.

I've tried installing Virtual Box using the sudo-apt command & it tells me the address where it is is 'wicked'.
As much as I admire the idea of open source software, I"m not having a great experience of it! I've not even managed to successfully install & run something yet.

Wish I'd hadn't fucked about.... but I tried installing Mint16 by creating a new partition now the old version has vanished & won't boot.
I've tried installing the new version on this spare HD but it won't boot from the HD docking station for whatever reason..... back to booting from USB for now.... groan!
I've got this VirtualBox thing but it's a Windows executable file.... won't it run in Linux?

Virtualbox is available for all platforms but not PPC.
Same goes for vmware

What you would be better doing mate, is just swerve anything docking station or usb booting related for now.

If you use virtualbox to install Mint, you can use it without making any real system changes and see if it is for you or not.

Download the virtualbox windows.exe and install it, and download the Mint .iso

I've had Ubuntu on my machine for at least 5 years and I have NO tech skills at all. If shit goes wrong I just search forums and do a lot of copy and pasting :) so far so good!

Problem I've got is that Windows aint recognising my keyboard & I've no idea what the problem is. It works fine for Linux.
So I can't do that unfortunately...... I've tried installing Virtualbox within Linux Mint but it can't find it from the command line.
I'm puzzled as to why it won't boot from the HD docking station. Spent about 2 hours dicking about with it last night ffs grr! :D

Do you have a bootable Linux partition?

Try apt-get install Virtualbox from command line, there's a .bin install for Linux on the oracle website last I checked too

If he has a bootable linux partition he wouldn't need v.box though would he? :conf:

Can you confirm this spacebandid?: You have a usb caddy for a spare HDD and either have or can install Mint on it via a bootable usb stick?

I would not recommend using a usb stick or usb HDD as a method of using Linux long term. USB sticks are horrendously slow and I have personally had problems using a caddy'd HDD. After some time the HDD and hence OS just seems to lock up so I abandoned the idea.

Have you tried going in to Window's safe mode? You may be able to either have a look at your keyboard config in control panel and check for any obvious error or failing that restore the machine to an earlier point in time.

Hopefully this will fix your Windows keyboard and then if you wanted to try Mint, do so as I first described using v.box

The idea is that with either vmware or virtualbox you can boot .iso images without having to mess with the host OS.
