So we get this ‘perception’ that somehow all of whats going on with earthquakes and weather etc etc is about sudden earth changes, when in fact the only thing thats changed is our perception of it all.
G'Day Andy
What about this?: In response to people noticing an increase in earthquake activity, the USGS issued a statement saying that earthquake activity has not increased, and put up a graph of California activity as an example. Except the graph that they show has about 10 earthquakes (+4.5) from about 1860 to 1960. Then the graph shows about 25 earthquakes in the time period of 1960 to present (in half the period of time). I have also seen a historic graph for the world and I think the results were even more dramatic.
I read something about the 12 biggest tsunamis in history. Four of them were in the years 6,000 BC to 1900. Eight of them are from 1950 to present. Again, an acceleration.
Yes, I do take into consideration that records get sketchy the farther back you go, but I will still go out on a limb and say that we are in the midst of earth changes, which are cyclical, and do not occur that often. First the changes are slow, then before you know it... BOOM everything is different. I know that you have heard about the dinosaur that was found to have plants in his stomach that were freshly eaten and not to be found at the site of the dino's death. This is one of the factors that has led scientists to believe that a sudden change occurred.
The 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami submerged islands and changed the shape of Trinket Island. There was an earthquake in California that moved the Foothills 10 feet. Sure, changes like these have occurred in the past and no one took notice. But it is my belief that we are at the cusp of bigger changes and they can happen overnight.
I think that volcano activity in the Ring of Fire has also increased expedentially starting around 1995ish. Outside the Ring of Fire, Yellowstone in Wyoming has been building up activity. I wanted to find a better graph with more history but this will have to do:
According to some volcanologists, Yellowstone volcano, located in the central US, may be on the verge of a large scale eruption. Some researches even suggest that it’s past due for such an eruption. The changes around Yellowstone don't seem to get much media coverage for obvious reasons, but the effects are getting more extreme every year with the water tables becoming highly acidic, deforestation, and increased tremors. The caldera of Yellowstone lies under a lake, and it’s rising. It also happens to rest on a bed of Uranium, so when it does erupt, the result will be very radioactive.
Getting back to Frankenstorm, the publicity started because meteorologists said that there has never been a recorded instance of a hurricane merging with a nor'easter. This naturally piqued a lot of peoples interest. You can say that there was nothing different about this storm, but meterologists would disagree with you and some of them will say that not only can we expect more of this, but that we can also expect our usual weather patterns to be changing.
