Potentially 40% going to be robbed from some savers. This is quite incredible. Imagine if you'd you'd left school at 18, and, for example, married your childhood sweetheart. And both you and your wife had worked hard all of your life in mediocre jobs. And maybe you'd gone without certain things in order to save. And you'd paid all of your taxes, paid into 'the system', and never borrowed irresponsibly. And you'd both managed to put away the equivalent of €1,000 per year. And you were reaching your retirement, and you'd got this nest egg to fall back on because pensions have been completely hammered. Forty years of diligent saving have meant that you have just over €100,000 in the bank. And someone comes along and tells you that they need to rob 40% to reduce Cyprus' debt-to-GDP ratio, or possibly it's too punish Russian oligarchs, it depends what story they're using at any given time. It's absolutely outrageous. It won' t make any difference to anything either. The IMF will come back for more sooner or later. It's a reminder if you do have a significant amount of money at the very least not to keep it in one place. People wonder why stuff like offshore accounts exist - this is why.

Guess what the head of the IMF said about it:

"This agreement provides the basis for restoring trust in the banking system, which is key to supporting growth".

Oh yeah, I would imagine 'trust' in the banking system is at an all-time high now! And I'd hate to live in a world without growth. What would become of the Eurozone if its GDP didn't grow by 0.5% while at the same time it slips hundreds of billions of dollars further into debt? They'll be coming for Italy, Spain, Portugal, Greece and Ireland next. And eventually the whole thing will collapse.

This is also a line in the sand with regard to relations between the old Anglo-American / EU-NATO power structure, and Russia and the BRIC nations. The gloves will be off now. Any chance that there could possibly be a relatively diplomatic relationship between the two is finished. Russia will find some way to retaliate for this. The old power structure is completely vulnerable and also completely dependent on Russian energy. I think this will merely hasten the consequences of this.

So because Cypriots rejected the suggestion to contribute to their own bailout, it is a few billion less than it could have been and the Troika are apparently gonna let Laiki collapse only insuring deposits under 100k, meaning large losses for deposits over 100k, way larger than the originally proposed 10% contribution.

10% on anything over 100k and 6.75% on anything under is not the same amount as 30-40% on anything over 100k.
So this is clearly not an equivalent bailout to save the under 100k deposits.
And some cypriots do have accounts over 100k btw, not to mention hundreds of jobs that they are about to lose.

The capital controls won't stop the bank run imho.

UPDATE: It appears the 'deal' to default/restructure the banks has been designed to bypass the need for parliamentary votes, since it is theoretically not a tax.
As Bloomberg further clarifies, uninsured depositors, or those with over EUR100,000 in savings may be completely wiped out: "Deposits below the EU deposit-guarantee ceiling of 100,000 euros will be protected, and a loss of no more than 40 percent will be imposed on uninsured depositors at the Bank of Cyprus, two EU officials said. Uninsured depositors at Cyprus Popular would largely be wiped out, two other officials said."

This Jew-inspired ‘guideline’ is aimed at fitting “de-centralized virtual currencies” into the larger regulatory regime under which government-controlled currencies of all kinds are required to operate.
