Again not directly related...but....
Texas Moves to Repatriate its Gold from the Federal Reserve

This is one of the most interesting stories I have read regarding the precious metals market in quite some time. It appears that Texas Rep. Giovanni Capriglione has a bill in play that would move the state’s gold from New York (where its under the “safekeeping” of the ultra shady Federal Reserve) to a depository within the state of Texas itself. The reason this would be such a big deal if it happens, is because a lot of the gold bought and sold globally is not very likely not actually owned by those that “buy” it. From my perspective, pretty much the only countries that actually buy gold and bring it within their borders are China, Russia and Iran. Most other nations that claim they “bought” gold, most likely hold a certificate that states they have gold in London or New York. So in other words, they have no gold. It looks like Texas is wising up.

While we have little color on what kind of carnage the President of Cyprus had to accept to his fellow countrymen, the ness is that :

•*CYPRUS, TROIKA REACH AGREEMENT IN PRINCIPLE, EU OFFICIAL SAYS
The terms, unsurprisingly what zee Germans wanted, are i) Laiki to be wound down; ii) Bank of Cyprus to survive but with deposit haircuts, and iii) deal would see secured deposits in Laiki moved to Bank of Cyprus. In other words, a deal far worse then the original on proposed by the Eurogroup last week - when the banks still existed. The key appears to be the 'saving' of the insured depositors (crucial to avoid a pan-European bank run) and the crushing of the 'whale' depositors. S&P 500 futures and EUR are surging, Gold is dropping modestly. We await final confirmation of the final terms of the final deal once the Cyrpiot people wake up (and don't forget the ECB 'standard of living' rules). The Cypriot Parliament still has to vote for this - and not one of the voted for it last week.

This is how much point there is in looking to financial markets for any kind of rational assessment of what is going on:
News that there might be a deal in Brussels has sent the euro rising around half a cent, up at $1.3033 against the US dollar (from $1.297 a few minutes earlier).
Wow, that's great, I think I'm going to put all my money in the euro.

Cyprus only has one hope. Tell Merkel to fuck off. Tell the IMF to fuck off, or even better shoot anyone from the IMF that's stationed in Cyprus. Exit the Eurozone. Default on their debts. Front up to the people and tell them that things are going to get really bad in the short-term, but this is our best option and the only possible way we can keep our sovereignty and have a chance of saving our economy. This deal is completely insane and will be ruination of them sooner or later.
The true measure of a man is not his intelligence or how high he rises in this freak establishment. The true measure of a man is this: how quickly he can respond to the needs of others and how much of himself he can give - Philip K. Dick.

What I want to know is how the hell the cypriot parliament voted on this.
As far as I can tell...there was no involvement from them at all....which would be about right for the EU.

My understanding is Andy, that whatever he comes back with still has to be put to the Cypriot government to be voted on yet.

lol beat me to it, exactly yep.

So this 'confirmed' deal that the media are talking about is anything but confirmed unless the president has some kind of presidential power to do this but I doubt it.
They could still yet default and my bet is they will. Its the only way they can retain any semblance of street cred with the people and tbh I think thats what is foremost in their minds at the moment, they don't want to swing from lamposts.

If/when this cash grab takes place at these large percentages, i think we will see global repercussions tbh.

Isnt the whole point of 'fixing the economy' to erm, fix the economy... how the eff is that going to happen when people lose trust in the system and take even more out of it?

I think Lynn Rothschild has a point in this article where she talks about the problems of economic pessimism and cynicism...

Evelyn and I worry that the resulting pessimism – even cynicism – about our economic system is undermining its very existence.

So clearly we arent alone here in these thoughts... the article goes on...

In an effort to bring the best to the system, I am co-chairing a new international group, the Henry Jackson Initiative For Inclusive Capitalism that is trying to showcase several immediate and permanent solutions from the private sector.

In our first working paper, available at henryjacksoninitiative.org, we have highlighted several private sector efforts to improve education, support small and medium businesses and to bring back a bedrock sense of ethics and civics.

And from the same article...

In fact, from 1979 to 2010, the wealthiest one per cent of households in the US saw their share of total income increase by 117 per cent, and in the UK it increased by 134 per cent.

During the same time, the incomes of the US middle class grew by just under 40 per cent – and in the UK, earnings actually fell by almost ten per cent. The Harvard economist Larry Katz has likened our economies to a large block of flats.

The penthouse at the top keeps ‘getting larger and larger’, he says. ‘The apartments in the middle are feeling more and more squeezed and the basement has flooded.

To round it off, the elevator is no longer working.’

Whether they ever address these issues through these groups remains to be seen... the economic cynic and pessimist in me says they wont. :P

Note that lynn rothschild is also effectively saying that it does not bode well if the elevator does not work. Ive read articles from Paul Krugman saying similar.

If people dont trust the system anymore, if they dont have any incentive to participate, the system will be in trouble, no?

So if this savings grab does exactly that, what good will it bring in the longer term?

They're talking now about how laiki bank is going to take a 100% haircut on all deposits over 100k and transfer it across to bank of cyprus.

Whether thats true or not remains to be seen along with the parliament vote on it but its already Monday over there so.../shrugs.

:secret2: Andy see #549 :)

Ahh...update....they don't know how much the haircut will be on 100,000 euros.
Also...this then goes in front of the 17 euro finance minister members...and then it will be passed...no mention of it having to go back to Cypriot gov.

Somehow they're suggesting this new bailout will not involve a tax therefore it won't need a vote.

I'm still trying to get my head around it.
