I read this book and stopped last august. He basically explains how you've been brainwashed, and continue to brainwash yourself into believing you need to smoke, nicotine withdrawal is so mild it's barely existent and any real pain you feel is purely mental and you do it to yourself.

He also explains how patches or any nicotine replacement defeats the purpose entirely. I've told everybody i know who smokes to get this book, it works, especially if you don't like your intelligence being insulted.

i thought, yeah lets see what hell say after a week.

ofc within days the guy started working in order to afford ciggies.

ive tried to stop, seems impossible.

There are studies to say that it's harder to come of nicotine than heroin. That's some claim!

Are you stopping smoking EVERYthing bat or just the cigs?

Today I've been three weeks clean from ciggies... No problems at all. I was fighting allergy, really couldn't smoke... At two day mark I decided that if I'm ever to quit, the time is now!

And then I quit. Three weeks in, not a single ciggie. First three days were pain. Like walking in fog, I felt like my brain is exploding or something. After the three day mark, I haven't got any trouble being without. I feel like smoking every now and then ofcourse, but can still steer clear.

And how breathing is getting easier! And food actually tastes like something. ;)

Hints for quitting... JUST QUIT! Fight it, that's it. It'll get easier in time.. For me it was sooner rather than later. :D

cheers guys. dont talk crazy sket. just ciggs lol.
im glad the book worked for you horiz. i'll take a look at it. i guess different things work for different people but i just dont want to be miserable. i tried gum before, it is no good, i chew and chew and i still want more. so i hope the patch is different and takes some of the effort and conscious need out of it. i feel like you though hada, its almost impossible. maybe its just a matter of fighting myself and winning.

Thanks. :D I need to confess, I have smoked my own homegrown tobacco twice in last three weeks, but that I don't count. :chuckle: (For some reason home grown baccy does NOT take ciggiepain away?? Nor does it cause any addiction to me either.)

I smoked about a pack a day, depending on what I do... Much to do = few ciggies, boring = chain smoke.

Oh, I'm 28 now, I began smoking when I was 14, have been smoking since without a real break before now. I'm quite amazed how easy it seems to be without smokes....

One thing that works for me is to practice drumming or go chopping some wood every time I feel like smoking. This way I went over the first few days.

Kick yourself in the nuts. You'll be hacking, wheezing, and gasping for air so much that quitting will be a natural biological response. Nut shots, nature's addiction remedy. Property of one-shot productions, a Mrindigo production. All rights reserved.®

In all seriousness, I wish you the best in ridding yourself of cigarette shackles. It might help to motivate you to know that major over the counter brand cigarettes use filler to make up a large percentage of material instead of actual tobacco. What's actually in it is paper and cardboard shreds that's chemically treated with binding aerosol agents and tobacco-based extracts.

Now this!

Is THE reason why it doesn't even taste like any other thing than shit and burning veneer... That's all it actually is! Compare todays ciggie smoke to home grown tobacco or any good cigar and you can tell it's two different things.

Natives believed tobacco is important medicine, this I believe is true more or less. At least it calms bad mood and clear thoughts...

I agree, Hex. I had an ex that smoked and would not give it up. Thankfully she started to roll her own with real tobacco, and there was a large and noticeable difference between the two like you said. I do think there could possibly be some medicinal properties, and may explain why it was so popular like you said.

I've no tips for quitting as I rather enjoy smoking, still, despite the best intentions of my ever-loving government.

I do agree there are certainly some benefits to traditional tobacco, hence the urgency to get us all smoke free, I reckon. Don't touch pre-rolled though, mainly for the reasons Mr i has already identified.

I occasionally indulge in a pipe bats, and this might help if you're trying to cut down. The only reason I never went over to it full-time is that people tend to look at you funny if you pull out a pipe in public and you're under 50.

^Only way bat, cold turkey. Have a good read round that site. Forget the patch or any other form of NRT...they just draw out the agony and seriously reduce your chances of success. Seriously.

NRT is like giving booze to an alcoholic.

To many, cold turkey conjures up visions of torturous pain, suffering and general drudgery. In fact, it is easier to stop smoking using the cold turkey method than by using any other technique. Cold turkey induces less suffering and creates a shorter period of withdrawal. Most important, cold turkey is the approach by which the smoker has the best chance of success.

Smokers must recognize that they are drug addicts. Nicotine is a powerfully addictive drug. Once the smoker has smoked for a fairly long time, the body requires maintenance of a certain level of nicotine in the bloodstream. If this level is not maintained, the smoker will experience varying degrees of drug withdrawal. The lower the level, the greater the intensity. As long as any nicotine remains in the bloodstream the body will keep craving its full complement. Once the smoker quits, the nicotine level will eventually drop to zero and all physical withdrawal will cease. Cravings for an occasional cigarette may continue, but this is due to past psychological conditioning and not to a physical dependence.

Cutting down on cigarettes or use of nicotine replacement strategies throws the smoker into a chronic state of drug withdrawal. As soon as the smoker fails to reach the minimum requirement of nicotine, the body starts demanding it. As long as there is any nicotine in the bloodstream, the body will demand its old requirement. Smoking just one or two a day or wearing a patch which is gradually reducing the amount of nicotine being delivered will result in the smoker not achieving the minimum required level, creating a chronic state of peak drug withdrawal.

This state will continue throughout the rest of the smoker's life unless one of two steps is taken to rectify it. First, the smoker can stop delivering nicotine altogether. Nicotine will be metabolized or totally excreted from the body and the withdrawal will stop forever. Or, the smoker can return to the old level of consumptions accomplishing nothing.

Therefore, cold turkey is the method of choice. Once the smoker stops, withdrawal will end within two weeks.

Batou ...I am a smoker and am also thinking about stopping again.

I've stopped on several occassions over the years then always end up having just the 'one' as a treat on a night out and that quickly turns into two and then the habit is formed again.

The patches helped me once but you get really really really weird dreams and the skin under the patch goes all bumpy and itchy

From the times I successfully stopped, it had more to do with breaking associations , it helps if you begin to realise when you smoke i.e with a cup of coffee, after a meal etc then try and find a distraction when you know those trigger points are about to arrive.

Doing something with water sometimes help because you can't smoke whilst your swimming, in the bath or having a shower.

On one of my stopping spree's I was in out of the shower about 50 times over the course of a weekend but it really did work.

Good luck with stopping , hope to join you soon

Good link there DG!

Cold turkey it is. And I'm a living example it works. :cool2:

Only problem I have, I can't bee totally without being exposed to cigarettesmoke, my girlfriend smokes, and yes also inside the house. I have asked her continuously to smoke just outside, it doesn't seem to be happening. She does go out more often though.

I have told her that now that I have quit, I DO NOT want to be exposed to ciggiesmoke at home... I have a right to smoke free environment if I choose so I think.

After 20 odd years of smoking & numerous failed attempts at quitting, I finally managed it back in 2005. By educating myself & doing it cold turkey.

For four whole years I was successfully off nicotine. But then I did something REALLY stupid. Christmas day of 2009 I was drunk & decided that an after dinner cigar wouldn't do any harm. Two weeks later I was back smoking at my old level.

You cannot ever touch nicotine ever again, however long it is since you quit. You are on life-long probation. Rule number one.
