Tinned food. Is it that unhealthy?

Is there some really good, healthy tinned grub?

How often do you eat tinned nosebag?

I eat a tin or two every day

I plan on eating lots of it as I've just fixed my larder up and if there's one thing a larder is good for, it's tinned food.

I don't think people eat enough of it these days, actually.

Budget-wise, it makes a lot of sense for me now too.

I remember my grandparents always had loads of it in, because they used to stock up whenever they went shopping and it's very useful to have around when you're low on funds.

Not sure how healthy it is, but it can't be any worse than starving.

Some of the fish varieties are quite nutrient rich but your fruits are pretty much smothered in syrup. Dunno if it's the same kind they pump into soft drinks but I imagine there's a fair bit of sugar in there too.

But then, there is also always this to fall back on:

Tinned definatly has the edge in emergency survival situations, I'm just not sure if I should be eating it every day.
I like baked beans, beans & sausages, etc. Pilchards are good for you as well I think, I like them. Actually, I've just realised I haven't eaten for about 8 hours! Time to crack open a tin

If I get tinned fruit ab, I usually get the stuff in juice because as you say, syrup is packed with sugar.

Can't remember where and don't have any links... but I recall something about the tins these days having copious amounts of flouride in them.

Not content with pumping our water and toothpaste full of the shit, they added it to the tins too.

As ab pointed out, the fish etc are all good enought things to come out of tins. Also, for people on budgets, they're very handy... although saying that, the price hike on a tin of soup or beans in the last couple of years, is absolutely ridiculous!

By far, tins are most handy for longterm storage with tuna fish being the longest use-by date by a mile in regards to everything else.

Though something I have noticed in the past year or so... is that normal things like beans and soup etc, all seem to run out within a 12 to 18 month period... it never used to be like that

The flouride thing I mentioned would need to researched. It's maybe a big fat porky that I dreamt up for all I know

The problem with tinned tuna is that it contains high levels of mercury I used to eat it a lot, now hardly ever.

I have a theory about the shorter use by date...it's the ringpull tins. They're thin at the seam? so the lid comes off easily. Maybe that's it?

Could be it irre.

As for the tuna/mercury thing... in an emergency situation, the benefits well outweigh the negatives in my opinion.

Is it ALL brands of tuna that contain mercury? I've never investigated.

They just don't teach you this stuff in school.

Top tip: Butter (the cheaper variety in the non-spreadable type paper wrapping) does extremely well in a larder, rather than the fridge. Even better if you invest in a 'butter dish' (though quite where you'd find one of those these days, I don't know). It doesn't take on odours or taste like the other stuff you store it near and is 'spreadable' straight from the cupboard. Marvellous.

Fridges? PUSSIES.

Pilchards are supposed to be the least toxic polluted fish (I think ) because they have a very short life span. They die/are caught before they can absorb all the crap.

I have looked into the fruit thing further irre, and I can confirm your lower priced brands will clearly state 'in syrup' or somesuch, whereas the more expensive stuff is preserved in it's own juice, and should clearly say so on the labelling.
