Well exercise releases feel-good endorphins, so I wouldn't write it off so quick. Some of the yoga style stuff is meant to be really good for deep relaxation - though I'm not talking from experience. I've done a bit of tai chi in the past, which is good if you stick to it (and good for self defence too) but I lack good balance, so found some of the more advanced moves hard, even though they look easy.

But I think the best thing is to combine a few things, like whatever herbal concoction works for them, plus some meditation & relaxation exercises & maybe the Bach Rescue Remedy.

mma nkickboxin very good stress releavers if u have a partner or bag
Figured I would expand on this a bit.
While beating on a punching bag (or partner) for hours doesn't stop the stress or pain, it relieves stress in the way that you get to let it out on something/someone. Kind of like when you're super pissed and punch a wall, you feel a bit better after that. It doesn't remove the reason you are stressed or stop it from being present in your life, but it's a good physical activity that lets you get the aggravation, frustration and pain out.
Kickboxing is great for building up your legs and arms, it's a good full body exercise for health reasons. Good for self defense, even though it can't save you in some situations.
MMA (mixed martial arts) contrary to the way it sometimes looks *flashes back to 2 guys in Cali for MMA competition wrestling a guy to the ground... shakes head*... it is a great full body workout for health reasons, good for self defense, again can't save you in some situations, and also lets you work the aggravation out on something other than yourself.
Both are gonna hurt to start with, hitting a bag, or someone else, the first few times is gonna hurt your hands so be sure and wrap them and wrap the wrists so you don't do any damage to yourself. Your body is gonna be sore from it which gives you something different, a different kind of pain to focus on rather than the mental and emotional pain.

I just got back from a quick paced 30 minute walk and I feel good. Sometimes if I pass by the park and there is no one there, I will get on the swingset and swing real high. I think when you are dealing with anxieties, or are stressed out, that the etherical bodies that lay right outside the physical body, get real tight and tense and need to be loosened up in whatever way feels best for the person. Some might call these ethereal bodies your aura, and I guess they are the same thing. All I know is that there are spiritual and physical bodies within each person and they all play off of each other and need to be kept happy, loose and free.

If I walk fast enough, or swing high enough, those spiritual bodies almost detach and have to catch up and it feels good. I am aware that this sounds odd, but I am trying to explain it in a way that is comprehensive. Maybe that is why a roller coaster ride can be thrilling? I wonder if a roller coaster ride can help someone overcome anxiety?

Oh yeah, the endorphins, too.

I don't do a formal meditation, but I have to sit alone and quiet every day sometimes several times a day. If I don't get that time, I feel irritable and cranky. If I have something that happened during the day that I am confused or bothered about, I will think about it and then let it go. Being able to let go of things is key.

I used to have a bottle of Bach Rescue Remedy, but I never got to try it. My cat got into the cupboard, chewed off the soft plastic squeezer and drank the whole bottle. She was in a state of bliss. I thought that was interesting. She must have smelled something in a closed bottle in a closed cupboard????? It must be good stuff. I have used a lot of other flower essence remedies in the past, and they too, work on the different bodies.

Lastly, I think it helps to have something to get lost in. A hobby.

one thing that helps with a lot of stresses is keeping things in perspective. we can get all het up about stuff that really isnt important.
in this way we make a rod for our own back and then do the whipping ourselves. of course there is plenty of stuff in life that is important but when we get flustered about the stuff that isnt we make it harder to attend to the stuff that is.
this is largely a mental thing but it spreads from there to infest all aspects of ourselves.
at its core life and its needs are very simple, over complicating it can lead to the spinning plates syndrome, which is stressful.
realising which plates need to be kept spinning and which can be put back in the cupboard can be a big help.

And how about if it was inflicted on you against your wishes? What then?
Hmm interesting, I thought about this for a while, I don't always succeed in "not getting stressed" but realizing I am stressed is the beginning of the process of de-stressing, if somebody or something is stressing me out I change the way I react to them or it or take a break and come back to.

I thought if stress was being inflicted on me the last thing I would want to do is medicate, I'd rather address the root(not valerian).

Perhaps you weren't Lesley....

For maximum relaxivity i suggest doing them all at once or especially in close succession.

Some so called "experts" call this an "overdose".

In the "Doc_Gonzo Guide to Relaxivity" we call this "Coma Therapy".

Following these steps daily should help relieve that pesky stress monster from your life. As well as any want or need for work, relationships, food, etc.

You will be paralyzed with pleasure and completely 100% stress free or your money back!

I'd love to know what books you feel able to read at this point.
The true measure of a man is not his intelligence or how high he rises in this freak establishment. The true measure of a man is this: how quickly he can respond to the needs of others and how much of himself he can give - Philip K. Dick.

:hahano: It doesn't matter how you do them...if you're looking to relax the last thing you wanna do is be twitching and itching to hit something. Now, if you combine them with massive amounts of alcohol and combat their effects with other stuff, you might end up relaxing in some way... :umm:

I apologize Gilly... the thread seems to have turned into how not to relax. Finally read completely through the first post though and there's a lot of good information there I'm gonna have to take into consideration.

I'd love to know what books you feel able to read at this point.

Why, The Bible of course.

I'm nothing if not holy.

Other than that assorted comic books and porn mags (to aid in the masterbation of course).

Maybe Doc Gonzo should start up his own spiritual retreat to heal people with this new fangled coma therapy. I can see your logic, but I think your cocktail would be too gnarly, so you might like to consider adding some MDMA and ket. I would also be inclined to offer the anal stimuli as an optional extra. It could go one of two ways, they might not care after ingesting so many chemicals, or they might completely freak out after having the LSD. You'd have to play it by ear.

PS, I'm too old and boring sensible to do that sort of stuff these days.

On a serious note, I usually get stressed out because I have stuff to do. The only way to get rid of the stress is to do what's stressing me out. If people like my family are the source of stress I tell them I'm having an early night and I'll be locking myself in the living room and sleeping on the sofa.

I'm a bit :( that people here think dealing with stress involves smoking hash/weed etc ........

If you 'use' anything other than your own mind to combat stress you're wandering into a terrorist where you don't trust yourself to solve your own problems

Stress is submertable if you put you mind to ......the key thing is you have to believe in yourself enough to overcome it.

Which is not always easy as it takes a lot of self belief, but smoking shit and drinking shit is not not going to solve anything

Sometimes your mind is the source of the stress... you can't count on it to do the right thing unless you shut it up and block it out.
