I don't think it's that most people don't have empathy, I think it's more that empathy seems to be too easily bypassed, especially in war situations, it's hard to have empathy for "the enemy", the suppposed "bad guys".
If it was the case that most humans didn't have empathy, then the earth would be more of a hell than it is.

Most empaths since Thatchers new world have taken to drug abuse and alchoholism, now the internet as the world around them grows colder.

I think it is rather difficult to suggest that 'elites' have no empathy - for a start how many people here have spent a day in the company of one of the so called 'elites'? observing the lack of empathy directly?

My understanding is that Empathy is the ability to identify with someone elses feelings or beliefs - if an 'elite' does not empathise with me because our lives are so diametrically opposed they cannot identify with my feelings or beliefs - but they are able to empathise with others who have experienced similar things that does not mean they lack empathy it just means their empathy has limits.

Which is much the same as most people.

My personal perspective is pretty much the same as yours - I tend to over empathise though - I had to see a psychiatrist the other day and his response to me was that I should 'Toughen up' which is something i do not wish to do if toughening up means losing some of my humanity.

We humans have this weird ability to empathise on one hand but still do shitty things because in the eye of the beholder the ends justify the means. A ceo of a company may empathise with the people his company are displacing in order to build a dam for irrigation of gm crops - but still go ahead and do it. A forester may empathise with the orangutans it is killing and making homeless but still chops down vast swathes of forest - or prison officers empathise with a prisoner but still lock em up or as talked about in another thread the ability to empathise with workers the families of those killed in a primark sweatshop but still shop there.
