I just caught an article about the profumo affair on BBC breakfast. 50 years ago and at the time, a shocking expose of the level of sleaze at the heart of the British state. I was born a few years later and my life has been peppered with sleaze episode after sleaze episode. And people keep thinking they are voting for people who have the public interest at heart :dunno:

So in this thread, post any examples you have of sleaze, hypocrisy and corruption at the heart of the state.

What surprises me is that people keep voting for these fucks.

It's all a continuous stream of sleaze.

Cynthia Payne probably has a few stories to tell about the establishment.

Also in 1978 Liberal MP accused of murder plot.

MP Jeremy Thorpe has been accused in court of plotting to kill his former homosexual lover and dispose of the body.

A further counsel bear in mind:

It shows small wit to pick up stones
To pelt the people as they pass.

Spanish and lived between (29 September 1547 (assumed) – 22 April 1616) that makes him a good candidate for Jesuit training so pay no attention to what he wrote. :P

I'd hate to say anything rude about the ex-Secretary of State for War, but it is hard to see what she saw in him really:

Keelerprofumo

Today she'd be going out with Aston Villa's second choice left-back.

'Stealing A Nation' (2004) is an extraordinary film about the plight of the Chagos Islands, whose indigenous population was secretly and brutally expelled by British Governments in the late 1960s and early 1970s to make way for an American military base.

An early mention for the expenses scandal, in which huge numbers of mps were found to be funding personal luxuries at the taxpayers expense. A few got plodded, a few bits of cutlery were rearranged at the table, then the fat cats just carried on eating.

And then millions came out and voted for em all over again...

LIBOR should be pretty high on the list considering it involved probably trillions of dollars of fraud, and the collusion of multiple banks including the Bank of England.

As we're on recent sleaze and hypocrisy ;) how about one which goes to the heart of the nation across generations and has the requisite corruption and sundry other disgraces?

The treason that was and is Hillsborough...

Very true but in this thread I'd like it if we could concentrate on state sleaze, hypocrisy and corruption. I'll gladly wax lyrical if you wanna do a thread on our own collective and individual disgraces

The state is composed of human material, our human nature is in no negligible proportion "sleaze derived", one man's sleaze is another man's bread and butter.

Bizarre just heard some Tory dude on the telly banging on about direct democracy being the only true democracy & elected representatives should be a thing of the past.... some form of hypocrisy there!

It wasn't at the heart of the state but a few years ago I worked for the Notting Hill housing trust and there are many, many tales I could tell.

What actually prompted me to finally leave was when the trust went into 'partnership' with a contractor called Connaught. Previously, we had used many different, smaller contractors to carry out repairs and maintenance to people's homes but somewhere....somehow....someone's palms got greased and this main contractor became our only contractor.

My job soon changed from chasing up repairs and dealing with the odd complaint to dealing only with complaints. I gave them a good, long while to settle in and tried to take it on the chin, but eventually got fed up of having to say "I'm sorry" to every tenant and leaseholder I dealt with.

It was my second first-hand experience of 'sleaze' and corruption within a charitable organisation and one that receives massive government funding to provide a vital service to those in need. My first came from working in Victim Support of all places...whoa mama. Tales I could tell about that place. Needless to say, that contractor actually went bust a few years ago and I have to admit feeling a little gleeful about it, although I did wonder if the trust went grovelling back to all the hard working, professional, smaller contractors they'd shafted previously. :chuckle:

Top thread, knob.
