Listen and understand. The game changed in Venezuela last night. What had been a slow-motion unravelling that had stretched out over many years went kinetic all of a sudden.

What we have this morning is no longer the Venezuela story you thought you understood.

Throughout last night, panicked people told their stories of state-sponsored paramilitaries on motorcycles roaming middle class neighborhoods, shooting at people and storming into apartment buildings, shooting at anyone who seemed like he might be protesting. People continue to be arrested merely for protesting, and a long established local Human Rights NGO makes an urgent plea for an investigation into widespread reports of torture of detainees. There are now dozens of serious human right abuses: National Guardsmen shooting tear gas canisters directly into residential buildings. We have videos of soldiers shooting civilians on the street. And that’s just what came out in real time, over Twitter and YouTube, before any real investigation is carried out. Online media is next, a city of 645,000 inhabitants has been taken off the internet amid mounting repression, and this blog itself has been the object of a Facebook “block” campaign.

What we saw were not “street clashes”, what we saw is a state-hatched offensive to suppress and terrorize its opponents.

After the major crackdown on the streets of major (and minor) Venezuelan cities last night, I expected some kind of response in the major international news outlets this morning. I understand that with an even bigger and more photogenic freakout ongoing in an even more strategically important country, we weren’t going to be front-page-above-the-fold, but I’m staggered this morning to wake up, scan the press and find…

Nothing.

As of 11 a.m. this morning, the New York Times World Section has…nothing.
NYTimes

NYTimes – nothing

.
.
.

The Guardian’s World News has some limp why-are-you-protesting? piece that made some sense before last night’s tropical pogrom, but none after it.
Guardian

The Guardian: Fluff

So…basically nothing.
.
.
.

The BBC is still leading its Latin America section on a Leopoldo story, as though last night had been just business as usual.
BBC Americas

BBC – Would you guess a sort of pogrom took place in Venezuela from looking at that?

.
.
.

CNN is also out chasing the thing that was the story in the old Venezuela:
1964465_10152219869700325_463488673_n

CNN: Your breaking news is broken.

.
.
.

Al Jazeera English never got the memo:
1939203_10152219838200325_311951454_o

AJE: NPI

.
.
.

Even places that love to hate the Venezuelan government are asleep at the wheel:
Fox News

Et tu, Ailes?

.
.
.

The level of disengagement on display is deeply shocking.

Venezuela’s domestic media blackout is joined by a parallel international blackout, one born not of censorship but of disinterest and inertia. It’s hard to express the sense of helplessness you get looking through these pages and finding nothing. Venezuela burns; nobody cares.

Let me put this clearly. Y’all need to step it up. The time to discard what you thought you knew about the way things work in Venezuela is now.

most people in the West are not that interested in what's really happening in their own countries, Venezuela is essentially just another bumfuckistan place that has nothing to do with them.

If its not on the mainstream news endlessly every few minutes repeated for weeks and weeks, with clear "information" from "experts" telling us what we should think about it, then it didn't happen

Venezuela Opposition

This week, a group of masked young men continued the siege of the Caracas offices of Venezuelan TV (VTV, a state channel) preventing the normal functioning of this TV outlet. They have set several bonfires all around the entrance perimeter of VTV threatening the normal thoroughfare of VTV journalists and other personnel, thus serious impairing the free functioning of this channel (see a recent report from Telesur here). The violence has involved the throwing of stones, bottles and Molotov Cocktails.

As a consequence of this, VTV staff Mayra Cienfuegos, was wounded by firearm (see here). Earlier this week, the cameras caught a bunch of the besiegers being taught by a group leader how to make Molotov cocktails (see videos here and here)

The attacks and violence against VTV have not been confined to Caracas, masked thugs also attacked the Tachira offices of VTV on February 14, during which reportedly they used gasoline to set rubbish on fire preventing the free flow of traffic. And also VTV journalists have been the subject of attacks and abuse by the extreme right wing supporters of Leopoldo Lopez.

VTV Caracas offices are in the state of Miranda of which the governor is Henrique Capriles, in the Caracas Metropolitan District, whose mayor is Antonio Ledezma (one of the instigators of the current violence), and it is in the municipality of Sucre, of which the mayor is Oscariz, who has not distanced himself from the violent protests.

Yet, despite his distancing from the recent extreme right wing violence unleashed by Leopoldo Lopez and Maria Corina Machado, no action has been taken by the Miranda governor. Nor by the mayors of the Metropolitan District or that of Sucre, even though this is their constitutional and legal obligation. It is even more puzzling since Miranda has its own police force independent from that of the government. The same is the case for Ledezma and Oscariz, despite the fact that Yuri Pimentel VTV President, and Delcy Rodriguez, Minister of Communication appeared on national TV (17 Feb) rejecting the violence and denouncing the lack of protection for journalists and the TV channel from these local authorities.

Were it not for the peaceful and careful non-confrontational deployment of the National Guard, life and public property would surely had been lost in VTV as well, because the aggressors would have entered VTV premises causing havoc with property and human life with tragic consequences.

VTV was actually violently taken off the air during the April 2002 short-lived coup d’etat against democratically elected President Hugo, showing the respect of the opposition for freedom of the press. Again, at the time no major mainstream media outlet protested about such gross violation of the freedom of the press. In fact many of them, actually welcomed and supported the coup.

Indeed, the pattern of violence has been a carbon copy of the violent actions carried out by thugs against public buildings, ministries, the national TV channel, supporters of the government, and perpetrating wanton destruction so as to create conditions of chaos designed to oust the government from office by force.

The silence from much of the mainstream media about such a gross attacks on the freedom of the press is to be deeply regretted.

Wikileaks show how USA FINDING Venezuela Opposition,

Documents Reveal Extensive NSA Targeting of WikiLeaks

A new report based on top-secret documents from Edward Snowden has revealed how the United States and Britain targeted the whistleblowing website WikiLeaks after it published documents on the U.S.-led war in Afghanistan. According to a report co-authored by Glenn Greenwald and published by The Intercept, Britain’s top spy agency secretly monitored visitors to a WikiLeaks site by collecting their IP addresses in real time. Meanwhile, the National Security Agency added WikiLeaks’ founder Julian Assange to a "manhunting" target list alongside al-Qaeda suspects. The leaked documents also show the United States urged its allies to file criminal charges against Assange over the Afghan War Logs. We’ll be joined by Julian Assange and his attorney, Michael Ratner, after headlines.

ARREST WARRANT FOR PRESIDENT YANUKOVYCH

Ukraine's acting government issued a warrant Monday for the arrest of President Viktor Yanukovych, last seen in the pro-Russian Black Sea peninsula of Crimea, accusing him of mass crimes against protesters who stood up for months against his rule.

Calls are mounting in Ukraine to put Yanukovych on trial, after a tumultuous presidency in which he amassed powers, enriched his allies and cracked down on protesters. Anger boiled over last week after snipers attacked protesters in the bloodiest violence in Ukraine's post-Soviet history.

The turmoil has turned this strategically located country of 46 million inside out over the past few days, raising fears that it could split apart. The parliament speaker is suddenly nominally in charge of a country whose economy is on the brink of default and whose loyalties are torn between Europe and longtime ruler Russia.

Ukraine's acting interior minister, Arsen Avakhov, said on his official Facebook page Monday that a warrant has been issued for the arrest of Yanukovych and several other officials for the "mass killing of civilians." At least 82 people, primarily protesters, were killed in clashes in Kiev last week.

Avakhov says Yanukovych arrived in Crimea on Sunday and relinquished his official security detail then drove off to an unknown location.

After signing an agreement with the opposition to end a conflict that turned deadly, Yanukovych fled the capital for eastern Ukraine. Avakhov said he tried to fly out of Donetsk but was stopped, then went to Crimea.

Tensions have been mounting in Crimea, where pro-Russian protesters raised a Russian flag on a city hall in one town and scuffled with police. Russia maintains a big naval base in the Crimean port of Sevastopol that has tangled relations between the countries for two decades.

Yanukovych set off a wave of protests by shelving an agreement with the EU in November and turning toward Russia, and the movement quickly expanded its grievances to corruption, human rights abuses and calls for Yanukovych's resignation.

"We must find Yanukovych and put him on trial," said protester Leonid Shovtak, a 50-year-old farmer from the western Ivano-Frankivsk region who came to Kiev's Independence Square to take part in the three-month protest movement. "All the criminals with him should be in prison."

The speaker of parliament assumed the president's powers Sunday, even though a presidential aide told the AP on Sunday that Yanukovych plans to stay in power.

The speaker, Oleksandr Turchinov, said top priorities include saving the economy and "returning to the path of European integration," according to news agencies. The latter phrase is certain to displease Moscow, which wants Ukraine to be part of a customs union that would rival the EU and bolster Russia's influence. Russia granted Ukraine a $15 billion bailout after Yanukovych backed away from the EU deal.

U.S. Ambassador Geoffrey Pyatt said the U.S. is ready to help Ukraine get aid from the International Monetary Fund.

The European Union, meanwhile, is reviving efforts to strike a deal with Ukraine that could involve billions of euros in economic perks. EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton is visiting Kiev on Monday and Tuesday.

The protest movement has been in large part a fight for the country's economic future — for better jobs and prosperity.

Ukraine has struggled with corruption, bad government and short-sighted reliance on cheap gas from Russia. Political unrest has pushed up the deficit and sent exchange rates bouncing, and may have pushed the economy back into a recession.

Per capita economic output is only around $7,300, even adjusted for the lower cost of living there, compared to $22,200 in Poland and around $51,700 in the United States. Ukraine ranks 137th worldwide, behind El Salvador, Namibia, and Guyana.

Ukraine has a large potential consumer market, with 46 million people, an educated workforce, and a rich potential export market next door in the EU. It has a significant industrial base and good natural resources, in particular rich farmland.

Ukraine minister: 'Russia's control of airports is armed invasion'

Russian forces have taken control of two airports in the Crimea region Ukraine's interior minister has claimed as he condemned the situation as an armed invasion and occupation.
He said there had been no bloodshed or clashes when armed men he described as Russian naval forces took over a military airport near the port of Sevastopol where the Russian Black Sea fleet has a base.
"I consider what has happened to be an armed invasion and occupation in violation of all international agreements and norms," Interior Minister Arsen Avakov said on his Facebook page, describing it as an armed provocation and calling for talks.
