Although he did emancipate the Indian sub-continent with a spinning wheel, walking stick and handful of salt which was pretty badass.

Must be the Scottish equivalent.

Let me put it this way. I was doing my family's genealogy. My mum's side fine, usual stuff jumping about all over the country.

I try my dad's side. born on a croft in Stornoway ...... shit screeches to a halt. Everyone and their sheepdugs appear to be compelled to use about 12 names.
Got as far as my Granny and gave up. I don't know whether to continue searching via Scotland's People or Crufts. :(

I think it a little naive to just buy the line that this has anything to do with economics...personally.

In the sense that this company, as have and will many others, are taking this opportunity to dump as many expensive leases and troublesome staff as they possibly can. Why have all these expensive shops and wages when we could ditch the lot and have a team of ten shipping stuff out of a warehouse from online sales? Duh... You could be forgiven for thinking, like me, that this is what 'they' had planned all along. Simple capitalism, in essence.

Somebody already pointed out that they would have seen this coming a mile off. Do you seriously think that they were oblivious to it and did nothing? It wouldn't surprise me if HMV isn't ultimately owned by the same folks who own itunes and the likes. Do you remember when the smaller retailers and independent traders got swallowed up under the HMV/Virgin umbrella? And then HMV announced they had to streamline and close SOME stores and Virgin just went for a burton completely? And now this? Come on, ffs.

This is the future folks...welcome. I'm just trying to figure out what they will come up with to sell it to us that the likes of Asda/Tesco etc. will no longer be stocking physical dvds/music because they will have to eventually. Will be the final piece of the puzzle, if you like. Maybe they won't worry about it so much if everyone is shopping from these places anyway because there aren't any other fucking shops anywhere? Plus, many of the staff in these shops won't be getting paid by them anyway (Work trials) - EVERYONE'S A WINNER!

Let alone the whole "you OWN nothing you buy from us" angle.

Could they really ever have gotten away with keeping the brand online and sacking all their staff without this 'financial crisis' bollocks looming over us all?

If I'm right, that is...I could be completely wrong, of course.

Rant over...apologies. But this really pisses me off. Nobody has even questioned it, either. I fucking give up.

The shoe shop Barratts is now completely trading online after financial trouble. I think you're right Abs. Although, the internet has been great for a lot of small businesses and cottage industries. I've bought loads of stuff from independent online retailers. Maybe it's not all bad?

It's lovely to see you again btw.

Potentially people could be better off running a small online retail business of their own, rather than working for somewhere like HMV. The downside is that you might not sell anything and then you would actually be worse off than you were in your min wage job. Swings and roundabouts.
