By then you are in hook up to your eyeballs with no savings and no house,

Teachers in the UK have a 40% higher risk of suicide than other professions.

I can understand where you're coming from Mikey, but you're going to feel like you get a shit deal if you compare yourself to other people. I'm not even sure that a lot of the salaries on that list are all that accurate anyway. Statistically, fewer people do the highly paid jobs, and a majority are doing the low paid jobs, though a lot of them are now being laid off!

I honestly think people are lucky these days if they get things like full sick pay, a pension, a proper redundancy package and they work for people who actually adhere to employment law.

It can be difficult to count your blessings sometimes, but things could honestly be a lot worse.

I know teaching can be a stressful job and my dad hated it. He wangled early retirement and redundancy, thanks to being very active in his Union!

A lot of jobs require a degree and you're in a junior position for 2 to 3 years and have a probationary period when you start out. This isn't unusual.

To be honest I don't see anything wrong with a starting salary of 20K and it's above average for a lot of professions outside London. Maybe I just know completely different people and have had different experiences. I did a 3 year Graphic Design degree and got into loads of debt. At the time, starting salaries for junior positions in my area ranged between 12K and 17K. You would be considered a middle weight designer after 3 years and could earn more. The hours are long for designers because you are expected to stay late to hit deadlines and it is another very stressful job, especially because everyone thinks they can do your job.

This is why I don't get what teachers have such a beef about; most of us are in the same boat as you.

An 80% increase. I'm surprised about that. It's getting to the stage where people are lucky if they have a job, all employers know this and many are milking it for all it's worth and if people don't like it they can piss off and do workfare.

For what it's worth, I'm gutted that I didn't get onto a teaching degree before the tuition fees went up, I didn't have the funds at the time, and I definitely can't afford it now. I would literally rather die than teach teenagers though. People who do that must have nerves of steel.

The reality of course is that if you are good at your job, your laboutr is often worth more than your salary.

Unless of course, you are part of the rich.

Hence why they keep the focus on "lucky to have a job" when they mean "you are lucky we return your skills and effort and time with money".

Clearly they resent even the pittance they pay us.

I wonder how many people will end up on workfare. The only problem here is whilst people are losing their jobs and working in these places for free, they won't have enough money to shop there. What's going on here?
