It is rumoured that the Kremlin is privately offering to help bail out Cyprus in exchange for the right to use a naval base in the Greek part of the Island.

Doesn't Britain have two Sovereign base areas in Cyprus?

I can't see that working out too well!

Dhekelia and Akrotiri. Cyprus used to be a British Crown Colony, think that's why they still had the Cypriot pound as their currency.
I don't know about that not working out too well....the Russians have a lot of money invested in this country too don't forget.

Britain and Germany would not be happy about this. I think Germany have use of a port that Russia may want as part of a deal.

Seems a little convenient considering that he stated us banks might get "depositor haircut" as well as Cyprus!

S&P downgrades Cyprus

Standard & Poor's has cut its credit rating on Cyprus by one notch a few minutes ago, to CCC.

That's two notches above default.
Of course, their status should already be junk, as they can't ever conceivably pay back their debts.

It means they're going to limit cash transactions now.

Cyprian banking wont collapse

Very weird the IMF stance, but Cyprus is not a third world country they can bully into handing over 10% of their savings?

The only way they won't collapse now is if they get the bailout they're after.
For that either the russians would have to come up with the lot or the EU in a different offer at the last second.
If nothing changes radically then they will default on Tuesday, simple as.

Even if the Russians are considering bailing Cyprus out they're holding all the aces and will squeeze everything they can out of the deal before nodding it through.

Anyone would under these circumstances.

Hasn't that always been the case when it comes to situations like this?

In the meantime as we await news...I found this lot....I believe in looking at different perspectives in the hope of getting a balanced view.
I want to state now, that I am in no way religious.....but the following has got me thinking. Ignore the religious backgrounds, just read and watch the info.
The quote is from a comment about the vid.
UK and other countries migrated from a Christian framework within which the financial world operated to a Jewish framework within which the financial world operated. So the financial world is now in conformity with Jewish law. Whereas in the past it was Christian. Similar in countries like Turkey except it was formally Islaamic law not Christian
However both UK and Turkey now live in a financial system that conforms to Jewish rabinical law. Under the Jewish rabbinical system it is forbidden for a Jew to loan to a non-Jew unless you charge Interest. And under the same system it is forbidden for a Jew to loan to another Jew unless it is free of interest. So for Jews the present system is a religious obligation.

Thats fine in as far as it goes but not all bankers are jews, not by a long shot.
Some of the biggest are not even religious and they certainly do charge each other interest.

A very interesting and informative piece by Ellen Brown on how this in Cyprus is even now having an effect world wide and setting precedents whether Cyprus is saved or not.
