When it comes to raising a car safely, axle stands are your friend. A new pair strong enough for a two tonne vehicle shouldn't be more than £20-30. Another big handy thing to have is a pair of ramps. I got mine for £3 at a booty. This is the way to go imo (or the digging a gert big hole route ) Once you can safely get a car up in the air a bit there is soooo much more you can do yourself.

On the subject of Kwikfit.........FUCK THEM... If you need a set of tyres they can be worthy, they do some good deals fairly regularly, for anything else stay wellllllllll clear. Daylight bloody robbery.
