Why stop at horses - I'm sure it would make them a few bob stuffing rat 'meat' & squirrel in there. I stopped eating burgers years ago because some of them tasted disgusting, and nothing like beef. I'll bet they've been getting away with this for bloody decades, and as a matter of principle, I think everybody who's eaten burgers should demand compensation. What else are the robbing gits getting away with that we don'te know about yet!

Well I have to admit that most times when I make burgers, my trust is so small, that I buy large pieces of chuck steak, cut the gristle out, and mince it myself with an attachment on the good old Kenwood food mixer. I've made sausages like that too, which are bloody good, & you can chuck in any herbs & spices, finely chopped mushroom, onion, apple, garlic & anything you're partial to. (but you've to get the stomach lining for sausage skins from a friendly butcher).

It's much less likely to happen when in f/t work though - Frey Bentos horse & ale pies this tea time!

I buy everything except meat from the usual places but I go the butchers for the meat.
Unfortunately I've had to change butchers 3 times now cos they've all gone bust.

There are a couple of butchers near me that I trust. I can see plenty going under because of the continuing spread of convenience stores.

But I once sat watching a butcher receive a delivery, and was sickened to see half a cow's carcass being pulled out of the back of a lorry by one bloke, and unceremoniously being dragged along the pavement, through dog sh!t & who knows what, into the butcher's shop.

There are still a few butchers in this area, and a fishmongers as well. In the town centre is a game butcher* that's been in business for decades so there is still a market for pigeon and venison in Reading.

There are 4 or 5 jumbo super markets around here but only one of them has its own butchers. No doubt when the others follow suit the independents will wither away.




*game as in undomesticated meat.

I have a great butchers near me. But they admit it's a struggle to compete with the supermarkets.

We used to have four butchers in town, that's for a population of 8000. There are two left of long family lineage, these are in the cheaper rated areas so they stand a better chance at making a living, the others retired out, no family to take over afterwards.

In the market square there are now five empty shops, one with only a floor space of an 150 square foot base is 24 grand a year rates alone, prime spot with similar rent on top. Many now sporting 80% off mega sales.

We use our butchers 85% of the time, as do many of the older population who have moved up here to retire, due to the towns ancient history at the foot of the stunning Yorkshire Dales.
One bonus we do have is, there is no tesco in town here, only a small CooP, who do very good Aberdeen Angus bergers, 92% beef made up with meal and nothing else, as a matter of fact we had them tonight, 4 for 4 quid, pound each, top nosh.

Local meat from 10 miles away, at the local butchers, gammon joint, 2.022kg for £7.50p.

CooP reduced counter, beef brisket from Scotland same weight £ 7.99p

Buy from your locals or loose them to the stable owners nearby.

I think theyve been using horse meat furlong time, but the mane thing is that we now know whats in the burgers.

It did stirrup some emotions with consumers, infact its been an unbridled disaster for the supermarkets, and now the likes of Tesco have to work at recreating a stable relationship with their customers once more. Im sure some of their PR guys have had night mares about it all, they are going to have to harness some creativity and work to put this issue out to pasture.

My local town has four butchers and they've all been going since I moved here. Maybe it's to do with being surrounded by farms, but there's loads of butchers shops in the towns and villages in the area. Local people are loving the butchers, depsite there being two massie supermarket sized Co-ops and a Lidl.

I'm very loyal and will only get meat from my favourite butcher. It's a family business, and his son has just taken over, who also happens to be a very handsome young chap. So, all of a sudden I find myself buying more meat.

Seriously though, all pork and lamb and most of the beef and chicken is from farms about 2-3 miles away. The slaughter house is in the same tow as the butchers, so the meat is fresh. I like that. I would never feed Master Pumpshaft mystery meat, and people who have attempted to do so have had very short shrift from me!

Plus you know what you are getting with whole pieces of animal...lets face it a lot of pre-made supermarket meals are a lucky dip at best, heck if they didnt go to great lengths to stuff it all so full of preservatives everyone would get the trots.
