Your post count on TZ is less than the one on this thread. Perhaps you could banter off.

Then we could get back on topic

Myself being a respectful member of SZ, DIF and TZ.....I think what you have said here is highly uncalled for. Nobody should be told to" banter off" to another forum that he is a member of. You are also a member of TZ and I wouldn't expect anyone to say the same thing to you either.

A little respect for each other and where we choose to post would go a long way.

I will leave this thread now and let you get back on topic.

most tasks that mods do can be done withiut community input.
permanent bannings and deletions are the two main areas where i think the community should be the decider. thread moving and stuff just let them get on with it and be thankful.

when it comes to steering the ship though, i think that is something the community should always have the first and last say on. if someone has an idea, put it forward and chat about it.

the t+cs of the sz seem fit for purpose already in the main.

compromise stars? that rings a bell somewhere :dunno:

Yes it does... on the majority vs consensus issues we've talked about. In which case, I think there is a place for both after thinking about it more. On some issues, we as a community can compromise, on other issues though we're going to have to go with a majority rules.
What do you think? Is that an agreeable arrangement for the future?
And if that is an agreeable arrangement, then we need to decide which foreseeable issues we will work to find a compromise and consensus on, and which issues we will let the majority rule on. As some issues need quick action, and some are okay to let sit and stew for a while, while we discuss what we want to see done.

What powers will the mods be granted?

Well I see their reponsibility as being:

Activate/Inactivate accounts
Advice to FAQs
Help ensure that commity guidelines are followed
Housekeeping: moving/merging threads

They need the power to perform these things

What rule book will they be following?

The guidelines that we all agree to try to self moderate to first.

Hence I suggest a list of activities under the following titles

 More than okay
;) okay
 don't know
:( not okay
 no way

What things can the mods do without permission of the community and an open debate about it?
temporarily ban- pending review
edit/delete posts merge/move threads upon request/permission
remove posts of offenders officially put on warning
put members "on warning" (notification/announcement--not exclusion) -pending review

How are we going to take this forum and turn it into something besides debates and arguing among members?

It isn't just that. loads of great stuff- some creative, some insightful and some up-to-the minute news

Can we create a thread specific to what we can reasonably accomplish, like a goal for each month, or each year (like new years goals)?

good idea

Can we create a thread specific to helping someone else out, pick a project to help someone else, and post as we go along how its working out?

they exist surely

you are talking sense stars (wtf is up with that?). yes i have been pushing for the sz to strive for consensus and to compromise for the greater good. contrary to popular opinion that isnt because im an idealistic utopian. its because its common sense.

that said, yes i can see that certain things need to be done fairly swiftly and that reaching consensus would not likely be possible on those occasions.
if the community agrees on an acceptable majority for those times thats fine by me. i'd be happy if we just tried some consensus experiments at this stage. so far all the idea has got is naysayers....

well done to you btw for plunging in as you have :)

I haven't, unfortunately, got time to make a long contribution to this discussion, but I just wanted people to consider the following.

Imagine someone signs up, and posts child porn on the site as their first post. Or even worse does multiple posts of this nature. Obviously that needs to be deleted immediately and the person involve needs to be banned immediately.

It's not possible or practical to have a 48 hour discussion every time someone is a bit out of line. Because sometimes they may be way out of line and need to be dealt with quickly. That's why I made this post:

sanctumzone.co.uk/forum/The-Community-Ch...t=20&start=100#64143

...because I am an idealist, but I think there needs to be a little more give and take, particularly in this medium where anyone can come here and just start posting anything, and ultimately one person is legally responsible for this (and probably the person who posted it). I fully believe in community moderation, but sometimes moderators will have to make spontaneous decisions, and act in a way that they think is appropriate with the ethos of the site, without consulting other people first. I actually felt that this was already happening, but obviously there have been some shenanigans to which I'm not privy.

All I'm trying to point out is I don't believe you can have an ideal situation with an Internet forum. You either have total chaos, or a moderated forum in which the moderators try to behave as ethically and transparently as possible.

Actually, unlike many other people here, my reason for leaving the DIF was not related to racism, nor moderation, the primary reason was that it had outlived its usefulness, and nothing positive was coming of it whatsoever. I think, actually, something positive has come of this site being set up in this respect, because they've banned tonnes of people over there who were trolling the site, and I'm sure the atmosphere has improved immeasurably.

But I think our primary focus here ought to be doing something positive, not on trying to create the perfect community, because the latter will be impossible. By all means try to build upon the good community that already exists and try to enhance it. But I think we need to be practical and realistic about how the site and moderation operates in real time.

Great post WUB.

Let's start with the postive instead of focusing on the no nois (they cann come later).

So please add to this:
 More than okay

1) Encourage more original content (e.g. WUB's article)

2) Encourage more inter-member support in their goals or problems

3) Encourage more life-enriching content

4) Encourage more up-to-the-minute and insightful news threads that offer more than the MSM

5) Encourage more new members by inviting folks from other forums to pop in by setting up a "just visiting" forum.

Okay, so using WUB's example... maybe we can agree on a couple scenarios...

We can all agree that someone posting child porn, links to child porn... the action to be taken is not up for debate, the posts are deleted (or the content deleted and post locked, depending on what capabilities the mods have), the person is banned. This example, if it should ever happen, would not result in the need to a discussion on what should be done, correct?
IF needed, in a situation such as that ^, a post can be made saying "this person was banned because of this, these threads deleted and/or content deleted and thread locked because of child porn".

So say something of a similar incident happened, but it was not child porn. It was several posts of animal mutilations, women or children being beat (or a man being beat because it happens both ways), or pictures/video/links to someone being raped. I really don't think something that drastic would happen, but there are some sick fucks out there, this scenario as well would not be up for discussion. Threads locked, content deleted and/or thread deleted and person banned, no discussion needed, correct?

If we can agree on those two scenarios, at least we're agreeing on something ... probably something that will never happen, but still...its an agreement and I'm desperate for an agreement on something to be reached lol.

Is this along the lines of a specific section of the forum, where guests can post without signing up for an account? They are not given full access to the entire forum (can read only sections that does not require members to be signed in, and cannot post in other sections, just one specific section?) Just trying to be clear on this as that is what it sounds like.

I agree with the other 4, and want to be clear before I agree with #5 even though it sounds like a decent idea, if we can all agree it would be beneficial to the forum and community to do something like this... also we need to know if it is possible to do something like that, so something with a behind the scenes knowledge base would have to confirm this.

All good points, but regarding this one, there's no reason other people couldn't write articles. I'm an infrequent contributor to Keelan's site, but I'm sure he would welcome articles from others. They don't have to be as long as the ones I write! The only reason I got started writing for his site is that I heard his show a few times, and thought he had a pretty good and sensible take on most issues, and then I had an idea for an article one day, which was this one:

wideshut.co.uk/george-monbiot-nuclear-po...the-new-world-order/

...so I just sent him a message asking if he'd be interested in me writing an article for his site. I'm sure he'd be open to other people contributing, you can ask anyway, the contact details are here:

wideshut.co.uk/contact/

Activist Post accept contributions as well:

www.activistpost.com/p/write-for-uscontact.html

I'm sure there are no end of other sites that accept contributions as well.

Porn such as that above plus also hard core porn is

Removal and banning with the reasons given.

Posting pics that would get you into bother at work, or in front of your kids without a NSFW warning should allow a mod to remove them and remind the poster to do so.

repeat offenders could be officialy warned and, while not being banned, would be temporarily open to more direct mod action

I don't know how you are still going SC! Kudos to you girl

As to ^^^^, please correct me if I am wrong, but those scenarios are already covered in the term DG signed us up to with the 'site' owners of whom the SZ comes under....along with a whole pile of other legalities...some of them french law which can be enforced here.

I think it is, I should probably reread the rules or at least skim them as they stand now... but I don't want to lol. Just making sure its clear among members that mods dont have to ask permission to bash heads together in that instance :) (yes, I probably could have chose better wording for that, but oh well)

You mention French law and it's enforcefullness on here... since this is an international forum, shouldn't we be using international law so it can be enforced no matter who or where someone is from?

Abs is inactive? That's news to me. :(

Basically the reins are being handed over to members... new forum made with moderation involved by DG, Frog, Novum, etc... they didn't want to go back on their promises here. Find the thread for "CONCERNING ALL MEMBERS" or something like that.
