To be honest,
I contend the consensus approach debate until absolutely clearly defined will kill this site.
I believe the never-ending confrontations around it with no resolutions on the horizon may well have already contributed to boring the ass of people and them moving on.

Many of the decisions which could have/should have been made to date have run into brick walls because of it.

For example:
Who makes the call that declares consensus has been reached?
When, With a floating, participating membership can that call accurately be made?

Apart from the 'c' word, The other elephant in the room to be tackled is the 'mod' bigotry, yeah it sounds an extreme term but one I feel is fitting.

To superimpose expectations upon individuals because of your experiences at the hands of other individuals elsewhere is kinda sad, insulting and deserves to be ditched, rather than accommodated.

Before you offer up the role, clearly decide and define what it is.
Only then are you in a position to assess whether an individual is complying with the expectations and processes of the role.
It's fair to the nominees or applicants that they have a clear picture of what is required of them and whether they feel they are confident or competent to take that on.
Absent that, they are setting themselves up to be knocked down.
100% turnover of mods to date btw. Their fault?

What powers will the mods be granted?

Well I see their reponsibility as being:

Activate/Inactivate accounts
Advice to FAQs
Help ensure that commity guidelines are followed
Housekeeping: moving/merging threads

They need the power to perform these things

What rule book will they be following?

The guidelines that we all agree to try to self moderate to first.

Hence I suggest a list of activities under the following titles

 More than okay
;) okay
 don't know
:( not okay
 no way

What things can the mods do without permission of the community and an open debate about it?
temporarily ban- pending review
edit/delete posts merge/move threads upon request/permission
remove posts of offenders officially put on warning
put members "on warning" (notification/announcement--not exclusion) -pending review
More than okay
1) Encourage more original content (e.g. WUB’s article)
2) Encourage more inter-member support in their goals or problems
3) Encourage more life-enriching content
4) Encourage more up-to-the-minute and insightful news threads that offer more than the MSM
5) Encourage more new members by inviting folks from other forums to pop in by setting up a “just visiting” forum.

Okay
by which i mean, not necessrily desirable to every member but acceptable/tolerable

1) all politcal beliefs
2) all religious beliefs
3) all philosophical beliefs
4) all schools of thought regarding economy
5) challenging the above of another

don’t know
by which I mean that I am undecided or its a grey area in my book
I have done the lot at some point

1) swearing/profanity
2) OP posting just vids/links/articles with no comment
3) VERY long copy/pastes
4) string of one line responses
5) copy and pasting full articles instead of salient passage and a link
6) “fixing” posts

Wanted to bring this up again, as it does play a part in continuing with the SZ and members should start thinking about all this, adding the lists MM has already started... to me, the above looks like a good outline to start with, now we need people to expand on it with their own ideas so we can all pool our brain power into one...
:chuckle: no idea if that makes sense or is even in the same topic category as what I quote :umm:

I'd be quite happy to use that top set of criteria as a starting point, get the mods/ZK's in place, then start on the details.

It's not compulsory to take part in the discussions, it's not compulsory to read them or vote on them. I would hope that anyone seeking to develop the community aspect of the site though would be willing to form the direction the community takes and if their not that interested in such processes to trust the community (as they do now) to make such decisions.
Many of the decisions which could have/should have been made to date have run into brick walls because of it.

Not sure which examples you are thinking of but I think that's a very simplistic interpretation of events on certain matters.
For example:
Who makes the call that declares consensus has been reached?
When, With a floating, participating membership can that call accurately be made?

Everyone involved in the discussion being in agreement would mean consensus has been reached.
I've been thinking about your second point and found myself recalling my idea for 'an inner sanctum', ie. a group of members who have stated a willingness to bore themselves to death with such matters, open to all but not necessary to partake in the rest of the forum.
Apart from the 'c' word, The other elephant in the room to be tackled is the 'mod' bigotry, yeah it sounds an extreme term but one I feel is fitting.

6 of one, half a dozen of the other. I think it's fair to say certain mods expected me to post certain replies on certain matters, and I often obliged, but it still shows how the schism works both ways.

Completely agree, although we have a bit of a time issue atm.

'Our' fault?
