Society as a whole is engineered with little prods here and there, adverts, loans, investments, religion, fashion, taxation, education (or lack of it more like) everything is geared towards making people ....I'd like to use a different word but lets say more predictable.
Each and every change has acted to make that particular influence stronger. Money is the strongest driving factor of all and its got completely out of hand now imho.

Everything we trade now is useless junk, its got progressively less reliable, throw away etc.
People can't even settle in one place anymore, can't keep a job for more than a couple of years, this is the new world already coming into view imho. People have communication up the wazoo but they talk to each other less imho, tech has caused people to have trouble with spelling simple words let alone understanding or appreciating poetry for example.

I totally get gilly's point that if you're in a position where you need wheels quick and don't have either the skills or contacts to get a cheap car for cash, you are pretty much pushed into getting a loan. There are other situations where a loan is about the only option for those on low income or with no savings. having to move home quickly for example. In the current paradigm, of itself, credit is not a purely selfish or greedy thing for many. It can be a necessity. Desiring a big plasma tv or a store carded Burberry bag though is a different kettle of salmon. There's a big difference.
When credit is on a state/national scale things just get silly. As they have. As has been pointed out repeatedly, states could issue cash without ever having to borrow it. The fact that they don't and choose the current insanity speaks volumes. The fuckers at the helm want this situation. it's one of the main ways they can appropriate real wealth. All this is just pure bullshit. Totally unnecessary bullshit. Unless of course you have an agenda that involves control and wealth appropriation.

Aye, as andy says, real wealth as in land, resources, infrastructure etc. As opposed to illusory wealth, numbers on a screen or bits of paper which could only be called real wealth if there were a toilet paper drought.

People can't even make a down payment in order to borrow money which they will pay back several times over in order to have a roof over their head. Now they have to borrow money in order to borrow money. And this is with virtually zero interest rates, and even negative interest rates being proposed. And this is held up as being something that will 'help the economy'. It's pretty much the worst thing that could have happened because house prices are already a completely unsustainable bubble, even after recently falling 20%. The last decade or so ran on a totally false notion of prosperity which was based on a massive housing bubble, until it burst, and now they're just trying to get it going again. Absolutely insane. Of course, there were several others that pre-date 2007, most notably buy-to-let. Only two groups of people benefit from this. Wealthy investors, and more prominently the banking sector. It literally reduces the standard of living of absolutely everyone else in society, even those who rent because the amount and quality of social housing is rapidly declining.
